October 9, 2013An Important note from the Principal Investigator Abolhassan ASTANEH-ASL on the document that follows:The following PowerPoint created by me (A. Astaneh-Asl) contains some of the first photos on his NSF WTC project shot on October 8, 2001 outside the Tribeca Hotelnear Ground Zero where flat-bed trucks carrying steel from the Ground Zero would stop. The PowerPoint was created by me for my own use and was not presentedin public.:Some of the photos in this PowerPoint , being the first photos released by this project were distributed by the National Science Foundation (Sponsor of my WTCProject) and University of California Berkeley, where I teach and do research and public service, in their newsletters. Some of the photos have been used incorrectlyby some, who promote conspiracy theories, to indicate things that are totally false. The photos in this PowerPoint do not show any sign of fire that may havehappened before the collapse of the tower. If there are any sign of smoke or fire, my close-up investigation of these pieces indicated clearly and beyond any doubt2001-10-8 DavidMorrisPhotosWTCon the ground and exposed to Ground Zero fires that werethat the steel pieces in these photos have been subjectedto fire after the collapseand whilewere restinggoing on for weeks.I would like to add that in my entire work on WTC project and inspection of thousands of pieces of steel from the WTC structure, I never saw any piece of steel withany indication of being subjected to blast.he facts about the photos in this PowerPoint are e as follows:1. The photos are most likely showing steel from WTC 7 . Photos on Pages 16 to 18 have “WTC7” or “7” on them.2. Photos on Pages 3 through 10 are all showing the same single steel beam. The beam is relatively minor member, most likely from a floor . Notice theduct openings on the beam web which is an indicator of it being a floor beam. Close inspection of the beam by this investigator (A. Astaneh-Asl)indicated that the distortion of the beam and fire effects and loss of some steel in this beam has occurred after the collapse. When this and otherphotos of this roll were shot, the beams on the truck, including this beam were still hot. See hot steam coming out of the beams on the trucks in thephotos on Pages 6, 8, 12, and 13. Scientifically, there is no possibility that the burning, melting and distortion of this beam could have happened whenthe beam was within the structure and carrying load prior to the 9/11 collapse. The reason is that if the beam was subjected to fire while in a building,as soon as the temperature of steel reached to about 500 degrees Celsius , much lower than the melting temperature of steel, the beam strength woulddrop to less than 50% of its original strength and the beam would collapse and would not have the chance to stay in its place and melt.3. The beams in photos on Pages 11 through 26 show column sections with minor or no sign of fire exposure. The slight smoke effect on these and similarcases all were due to fire at Ground Zero after the collapse. The columns were also warm when these photos were taken on October 8, 2001 indicatingthat they have been subjected to fire at Ground Zero after the collapse.Respectfully,Abolhassan ASTANEH-ASL, Ph.D., P.E.Professor and Principal Investigator for the NSF Funded UC Berkeley WTC Project (Duration: 10-2001 to 9-2002)1 of 26
