2016: How Do You Measure a Year?525,600 minutes. That’s what we get every year—time to makethe most of, time to waste, or time to make theworld just a little better. CEB volunteers andthe Global Corporate Citizenship team hadquite a year in 2016. Our work continued togrow in breadth and depth, and I couldn’t bemore proud of what we’ve accomplished. At the beginning of 2016, we introduced CEB’s100% Promise, which captured key elementsof our commitment to our employees andcommunities for 2016. The 100% Promise hadfour parts: 100% of CEB offices have the opportunityto give a day of service to their localcommunities. 100 staff members give a week of volunteerservice to a nonprofit supported by CEB. 100 nonprofit organizations receive probono support from CEB. A percentage of our profits will be donatedto charity on CEB Gives Back Days.6We achieved all of these objectives throughGlobal Impact Week, CEB Gives Back Days, ournew Volunteer Service Fellowship program, and our general pro bono work. In numbers,CEB Gives Back Days raised 800,000 forfuture charitable giving, we awarded 100volunteer fellowships (including our GlobalImpact Week fellows), and 102 nonprofitsreceived pro bono support from CEB.Almost 90% of our employees took part in thesixth annual Global Impact Week, providingover 18,500 hours of volunteer service in81 cities on six continents. Collectively, wepartnered with 191 charitable organizationsaround the globe and completed more than 196service projects, making this our largest serviceevent to date.During Global Impact Week, we sent 10Global Impact Week fellows to Lima, Peru, for an immersive volunteer experience at theMartincitos Center for the Elderly. Most ofthe beneficiaries of Martincitos are indigenousAndeans (Quechuas), with little access toeducation during their lifetime and very fewresources. Our volunteers may have only beenthere a week, but it’s safe to say their lives werechanged forever by the opportunity to get toknow the Martincitos residents. In 2016 we provided pro bono service to over100 nonprofit organizations—more than twicethe number served last year. More than 240CEB volunteers provided over 4,000 hours oftheir time, a contribution that (including inkind pro bono giving) exceeded 1 million invalue for the social sector. This expansion in the quantity of organizationsserved came even as we continued to enhancethe quality and sophistication of our offerings.CEB’s 2016 pro bono portfolio leveraged ourunique strengths to provide services that noother organization would be able to deliver, including a CEB Challenger Messagingworkshop, HR partnerships, OPQ assessments, and new best practice insights surfaced fromprogressive nonprofit organizations. I’mparticularly proud of the launch of our online

Pro Bono Resource Center—a small library ofCEB content we have made available to thesocial sector for free.As always, it’s been a year filled with learningand new experiences. My favorite new word for2016 came from one of our Volunteer moment when you forget you’re volunteeringto change lives because doing so is changingyours. Volunesia was the theme of countlessstories throughout 2016. You can read a sampleof these stories on our blog. I’m inspired everyweek by the volunteer stories I read there, andI can’t wait to see where 2017 will take themand us.Lisa LandisHead, Global Corporate CitizenshipManila, Philippines7

Global Impact Week 2016Six Years, Great Impact8For the sixth time, CEBers around the world tooktime out of their workweek in May to give back totheir local communities. Our teams helped refurbish local schools, visited with the elderly, builthomes, cleaned parks, supported LGBTQ youthand our veterans, donated blood, cared for animals, and fed thousands of people. For the second time, we sent 10 Global ImpactWeek fellows to Latin America for an immersivevolunteer experience. Our volunteers came fromall over the world and spent a week in Lima, Peru, volunteering at the Martincitos Center for theElderly. In addition to daily visits with the residents, the team helped with the center’s daily ac-tivities and revitalized the center’s garden areasand earthquake protection circles, which are vitalas earthquakes occur frequently in Peru.“ I have been utterly amazed at the workCEB employees are willing to do in theircommunities. Most importantly, I havebeen amazed by how Global ImpactWeek brings joy not just to [those]whom employees are helping, but also toemployees themselves—to be a part ofsomething bigger than themselves andto contribute to a greater cause.”MichaelAccount ManagerDurban, South Africa“ CEB Global Impact Week always createsexcitement among CEBers. I am proudto have been part of the GIW Team thisyear. We brought smiles to the faces of thekids we helped and fulfilled the dreamsof thousands of people in need. Our Pro BonoService EffortsAt CEB, we help companies grow by harnessing theiruntapped potential. We do this largely by workingwith business leaders to inject greater precisioninto their strategy and talent decisions. Through probono work, we’re thrilled to make many of the sametools we use to support global executives availableto nonprofit organizations, social sector leaders, andother civic-minded organizations so they too canmagnify their impact. In 2016, CEB pro bono volunteers logged morethan 4,200 pro bono hours, completing over 65engagements to help nonprofit organizations. We’reproud of this work—especially our support of twoWhite House initiatives to address opportunity gapsfaced by young men and boys of color in America andto help thousands of underemployed Americans findhigher-paying technology jobs.In 2016, we worked to increase the scope of theservices we offer to the social sector. In October, welaunched the Pro Bono Resource Center—a free webportal with best practices and tools sourced fromHR leaders to help nonprofit executives addresstheir most pressing talent challenges. In addition,CEB volunteers harnessed the power of the CEBChallenger model to create a program that helpsnonprofit fundraisers more effectively engage theiraudiences.2016 Pro Bono by the Numbers4,200 pro bono hoursdonated by CEBemployees10220 CEB volunteersinvolvedin pro bonoengagements65 pro bonoprojects andengagements102nonprofitorganizationssupported byCEB pro bonovolunteers in 2016 1 million value ofCEB pro bonoin-kind giving andservice in 2016

This decline is due in partto the degradation or developmentof nesting beaches, the directharvesting of turtles and eggs forhuman consumption, and the impactfrom commercial fishing. Voices of OurVolunteersGrowing up with nine siblings, Shaun got used tohelping others at a young age. His natural tendencyto help others grew over the years as he volunteeredat an orphanage in Mexico in 2007 (and again in2011), joined Teach for America in 2008, and starteda nonprofit in 2014.In 2015, his desire to help others led him to CEB,whose spirit of generosity drew him “like a moth toa flame,” Shaun says. He started to take advantage ofopportunities to volunteer as soon as possible. Heparticipated in a pro bono project for the nonprofitorganization Spark and helped create a webinar withShaun LoriaExecutive AdvisorArlington, VACEB Pride. In 2016, he was named a CEB Volunteer Service Fellow, which gave him the opportunity to return to theorphanage he volunteered at twice before. Shaunand another CEB volunteer spent a week at HogarIrekani, which houses 25 children. “I had a big family; that was an even bigger family,” Shaun recalls. Infact, the children there “were like my little brothersand sisters,” he says.14This connection to people is one of volunteering’smost rewarding aspects for Shaun. “What I like mostabout volunteering is that it connects you with fellowpeople, whether through a nonprofit in a locationyou didn’t know about, a little kid in Mexico whomyou didn’t know, or a local college student strugglingto make ends meet.”This last example is exactly whom Shaun is helpingas director of the nonprofit Extraordinary Institute(XI) in Washington, DC. The organization providesincremental loans to help financially disadvantagedcollege students afford to complete their studies.Shaun applies his business acumen gained at CEB tohis work at XI and his volunteering experiences. Inturn, he applies his love of helping others to his workas an Executive Advisor. “The way I think about mywork at CEB is in line with my calling to help people,in this case, to help organizations,” he says.“On the one hand, hanging out with some kids in anorphanage in Mexico seems unrelated to looking ata company’s strategic plan and giving feedback, butthey’re related in that you’re helping something getbetter,” he said.

As an extrovert, Vidushi Bhatia is drawn toopportunities to work with people and get involvedin her community. “I always felt it in myself,” shesays, “[the desire to serve] was an inherited trait.”And being at CEB has given her many opportunitiesto put that spirit of generosity into action from thebeginning.“From that first Global Impact Day, that [event] hasalways been very close to my heart,” she says. Thatfirst year, Vidushi chose to organize a street play withthe theme of teaching good hygiene. “I still rememberit was so hot,” she says. Her small troupe performedthe play four times in remote villages around Delhiand Gurgaon—covering almost 35 km—all withinfour or five hours. It was a struggle to keep up theirenergy. But her attitude through it all was “No, wemust do it!” She knew that the play’s theme and thehygiene kits they were delivering would help people.More recently, Vidushi helped organize the “Weekof Felicity” in the Gurgaon office. What began a fewyears ago as a one-day Diwali fête where NGOs couldsell their products in the office has grown since into aweek for volunteering and community engagement. This year, CEBers learned the basics of Indian signlanguage and animal rights, accompanied studentsfor an educational tour of the Railway Museum, andheld interactive game sessions with children living inshelter homes to teach good decision making. The buzz around the Week of Felicity is due in partto Vidushi’s infectious enthusiasm. She has alwaysappreciated the support and engagement of herpeers and leaders at CEB, but she will always seeopportunities for more growth, more engagement, and more service. And she always strives to findways that CEBers’ unique skills can bring smiles tothe faces of those they serve.“The results and the smiles we receive,” she says,“that’s the reward for me.”Vidushi BhatiaSenior Research AnalystHR PracticeGurgaon, India15
