POLIFKA, HOW DO YOU DEFINEBIOFEEDBACK?The body constantly gives us feedback aboutour wellbeing. When you feel stressed, forexample, your heart rate increases andyour hands may start to feel sweaty. Whenyou feel tired, your focus decreases andheadaches may come into play. And so forth.This feedback the body gives us is what wecall biofeedback.6YOU SPECIALIZE IN BIOFEEDBACKTHERAPY. WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?During biofeedback therapy, the client isconnected to a biofeedback device by meansof special harnesses or electrodes placed onthe skin. The device uses electric current anda specific range of waveform frequencies toscan all the biofeedback the body has to offer,such as heart rate, breathing patterns, sweatlevels, . The results of the scan are displayedon a monitor. The therapist then helps theclient master various techniques to changetheir body’s automatic functions at will, whilethe client can see on the monitor how theirefforts are taking effect.7

WHAT RESULTS ARE TO BEEXPECTED?Over the years, I have seen hundreds if notthousands of clients who have improved theirability to relax and focus. Among them areadults and children with autism and ADHD.What’s more, many of my clients have foundrelief from diseases, allergies, stress, anxietyand more.IS BIOFEEDBACK THERAPYCOMPATIBLE WITH OTHERTHERAPIES?Yes! Biofeedback therapy can even significantly improve the effects of medicationand other kinds of therapies. People tend tohandle rehabilitation programs better whenbiofeedback therapy is used to improve theirfocus and decrease feelings of anxiety anddepression. In this sense, biofeedback therapycan enhance any type of therapy imaginable.The list of healthproblems it can detectis almost endless!ARE THERE RISKS TO THIS KIND OFTHERAPY?No, although I do recommend alwaysconsulting with your healthcare professionalfirst. In any case, biofeedback therapy isnon-invasive. The electric current that passesthrough the body is completely harmless andso subtle that most of my clients don’t evenfeel it. If they do, they describe a warm andpleasant sensation.HOW DOES ABIOFEEDBACK DEVICE WORK?In a healthy body, all cells operate at their idealfrequency, as nature intends it. Unhealthycells, by contrast, vibrate differently. Theyemit electromagnetic waves that are flawed.A biofeedback device detects what’s wrong,by sending electric pulses through the body.WHAT KIND OF HEALTH PROBLEMSCAN A BIOFEEDBACK DEVICE HELPDETECT?The list is almost endless. Take the device I usein my practice, which is a quantum biofeedback device. Because it focuses on the entirebody electric, there is a long list of stressfactors related to diseases, allergies, intolerances and deficiencies which it can helpprevent or alleviate. The current literatureshows that the average quantum biofeedback device checks over 15,000 markers.8YOU MENTION A QUANTUMBIOFEEDBACK DEVICE. WHAT ISQUANTUM BIOFEEDBACK?‘‘Traditional’ biofeedback measures a physical response and feeds it back to the client’sconscious mind. Quantum biofeedback,however, also focuses on the unconsciousparts of the body and brain. So, instead ofmy clients having to try and alter certainautomatic body functions themselves, thequantum biofeedback device sends out electromagnetic waves that do (most of) the workfor them. The waves attempt to cancel out theabnormal frequencies of imbalanced cells,ideally helping them return to their optimalstate.9

You can use these (and other) essential oils to alleviate stress by inhaling them witha diffuser or by applying them on the skin.ALTERNATE NOSTRIL BREATHINGSlowing down breathing has a relaxing effecton the body. A simple technique, calledalternate nostril breathing, works as follows:- Exhale completely and close your rightnostril with your right thumb.- Inhale through your left nostril, then closingit with your left thumb.- Open the right nostril and exhale through it.- Inhale through the right nostril and thenclose it.- Open the left nostril and exhale through it.- Repeat this cycle for up to five minutes.10YOGA EXERCISESContrary to what you may think, you don’thave to be a seasoned yoga enthusiast toenjoy its relaxing effects. Take the sphinx, forexample, a yoga position especially popularwith beginners:- Lie flat on your stomach.- Place your elbows under your shoulders.- Slowly lift your chest, pulling your shouldersback and pressing your forearms down.- Look forward and let your chin drop slightly.Holding this position for just a few minutesstretches the abdominal muscles and opensthe chest to allow for more relaxed breathing.11

WHAT DOES ‘HOLISTIC’ MEAN?Dr. Simon: “Holistic means focusing on theclient’s problems as a whole. At the end of asession, I like to give my clients concrete tipsto help them make lifestyle changes that,combined with what they learned from thesession, will make it easier to find relief fromwhat is troubling them.”YOU’RE TALKING ABOUT AN ELECTRICCURRENT GOING THROUGH THEBODY. ISN’T THAT DANGEROUS?Dr. Simon: “No, it’s not dangerous at all. Thevoltage is very, very low. Most people can’teven feel it. Some can, but they find thesensation soothing.”Ms. Czakó: “I thought it would be hard, butyou get to watch your brain’s reactions on amonitor the whole time. So, you can immediately see if what you are doing, works.”Ms. Czakó: “I agree. To me, it feels like takinga bath that’s just the right temperature. I findit very relaxing.”Dr. Simon: “Indeed, biofeedback therapy maysound complicated while in fact, anyone cando it. Even small children, as long as they cansit properly still and are willing to completethe program.”WHAT DID YOU THINK WHEN YOUFIRST SAW THE DEVICE, MS. CZAKÓ?“It looked kind of scary, I must admit. Therewere all these wires and electrodes, whichDr. Simon had to attach to my head. But Ididn’t feel a thing, and I still have all my hair(laughs).”WHAT ARE THE WIRES ANDELECTRODES FOR?Dr. Simon: “A biofeedback device useswires and electrodes to send electric pulsesthrough the body, and to interpret the body’sresponse to those pulses. This ‘feedback loop’can be a helpful tool in preventing stressfactors in the body such as vitamin deficiencies, bad nutrient levels, inflammation,allergies, addictions, brainwaves that point tostress, .”CHANGING HOW YOUR BRAINWORKS, THAT SOUNDS DIFFICULT.IS IT?IS THE ROLE OF THE THERAPISTLIMITED TO OPERATING THEBIOFEEDBACK DEVICE?Dr. Simon: “No. I also teach the client to adjusthow different parts of their brain ‘talk’ toeach other. Many of my clients struggle withfocusing due to depression, autism or ADHD,for example. Thanks to biofeedback therapy,they have managed to create new and moreefficient pathways for their brain cells tocommunicate with each other.”HOW LONG DOES A SESSION TAKE?HOW MANY SESSIONS ARE NEEDED?Dr. Simon: “Biofeedback therapy sessionsgenerally take between thirty and ninetyminutes. The number of sessions neededvaries from client to client. Most of my clientsachieve results in fifteen to thirty sessions.”ARE THE RESULTS PERMANENT?Dr. Simon “Results can be permanent, yes. It’slike learning how to ride a bicycle.
