In 2021, we expanded effortsto reduce our emissions, including through improvedoperating practices, product reformulations and,where necessary, emissions control equipment. In2018, we set a goal to reduce emissions intensity(Scopes 1 and 2) by 15% by 2025 from a 2017baseline. And we continue to raise our ambition.We have committed to the Science-Based Targetinitiative and are working to define and quantify ourScope 3 emissions. When this work is complete, wewill define new science-based targets aligned to theParis Agreement.In 2021, we continued to find new opportunities toexpand our use of renewable energy and install newenergy-saving technologies, such as launching apartnership with Constellation, a leading energysolutions provider. We maintain systematicbusiness continuity planning and crisismanagement processes to address climaterisks. The program reflects guidance fromthe Task Force on Climate-Related FinancialDisclosures (TCFD). We will expand our analysisof potential risks and opportunities to include aquantitative evaluation of our global cyWaste and SpillsWe are committed to reducing, reusing and recyclingmaterials to minimize waste, as well as preventingspills and releases.Although we’ve reached many of our waste disposaland waste-to-landfill goals early, we continue ourefforts to minimize waste and promote circularityacross our value chain. A few examples from 2021include: Working with regional waste coordinators todevelop and implement location-specific wasteminimization plans for their top waste-producingsites and sharing best practices; Updating packaging from virgin to post-consumerrecycled (PCR) plastic; and Collaborating with paint recycling and reuseprograms globally, including the PAINTCARE initiative in the U.S., which allows consumersto recycle leftover or unwanted paint;PRODUCTCARE program in Canada, whichprovides recycling locations; and as a foundingmember of the PAINTBACK program in Australia,which seeks to find new uses for unwanted paint.40%of manufacturing and R&Dfacilities with zero processwaste to landfill, abovetarget of 35% by 2025Upgrading packaging topost-consumer recycled plasticfor a better environmentOur Søborg, Denmark, Architectural Coatingsplant recently updated all product packagingfrom virgin plastic to post-consumer recycledplastic (PCR). Changing to 90% PCR plasticnot only helped lower our carbon footprint butalso resulted in lower packaging costs andproduction time due to greater efficienciesin packaging sizes. In total, the project isanticipated to save more than 308 metric tonsof carbon annually once fully completedin mid-2022.We also continue to support strong managementpractices across our facilities to prevent spillsand releases. IntroductionSustainability @ PPGProduct yWaterIt is our responsibility to optimize water use throughconservation and reuse.Our water management approach is based on aglobal mapping process that enables us to identifyrelative water withdrawal and discharge risks inour portfolio. At many PPG sites, much of the waterconsumed is for equipment cleaning. In 2021, wecontinued to improve our processes to require lesscleaning and water use while maintaining highquality production standards. We also evaluated newopportunities to reuse wash water in our processesand products. For example, we scaled our effortsin support of our Zero Discharge Project, an effortwithin our Architectural Coatings business to reducewastewater discharge from its most water-intensivefacilities. We seek to ensure that ouremployees and contractors return home safely eachand every day.In 2021, we implemented new training to makesure that our managers and operations leadersare continually educated on process safety. Wespearheaded several new initiatives to standardizeexpectations for handling five-gallon pails, launchedregional pilots for measuring progress of our EHSculture and established a partnership with a thirdparty vendor to provide standardized EHS trainingcontent to implement globally. Bythe end of 2021, 90% of our facilities with more than50 employees had programs in place.PPG facilities in Cleveland and Barberton,Ohio, recently received multiple Awards forExcellence from the Ohio Chemistry TechnologyCouncil (OCTC) for initiatives to eliminate spillsand protect employee health. For example,the Barberton plant was honored for its “Walkthe Line” program, requiring team membersto inspect every valve and connection beforeperforming several procedures.
