Domestic Admissions Guide 20231.INTRODUCTIONWelcome to the Domestic Admissions Guide 2023 for domestic applicants to the Doctor ofMedicine (MD) (CRICOS code: 079216J) and the Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) (CRICOScode: 074120B) at the University of Sydney.Applying for medicine or dentistry is a complicated process, and the aim of this Guide is toanswer the most common questions about admissions criteria and how to apply.It will help you to determine whether you have met the criteria to submit an application foradmission to the MD or DMD. It also provides a step-by-step guide to completing theapplication form, submitting documents and meeting the timelines.If, after reading this information, you have any questions, please feel free to contact us via theContact Us page at the end of this Guide.Thank you for considering the MD and the DMD at the University of Sydney and best wishes foryour application.DUBBO STREAM FOR MD APPLICANTSThe Dubbo stream in the MD has been developed under the Australian Government MurrayDarling Medical Schools Network (MDMSN) initiative, with the aim of attracting morepractitioners to rural and/or remote medical practice. The Dubbo stream is taught in new stateof-the-art facilities at our School of Rural Health site in Dubbo, NSW, with clinical teachingcentred at the newly redeveloped Dubbo Hospital.ASSUMED KNOWLEDGE FOR MD APPLICANTSIn 2020, the MD curriculum was revised to include more time in clinical settings and preparationfor practice. Biomedical science teaching and learning in Year 1 is therefore at a higher levelthan the previous program. These changes were endorsed by the Faculty of Medicine andHealth and approved by the University’s Academic Board.The assumed knowledge on entry to the MD program is in anatomy,physiology and molecular/cellular biology. Students entering the MD will have access to anonline Foundation Knowledge Course, delivered by Sydney Medical School, which covers theassumed knowledge. Access to the course is provided once students have enrolled in the MDprogram. Students are required to complete the online Foundation Knowledge Course and asubsequent integrated self-assessment. Further information will be provided in offer letters.Sydney Medical School values highly the diversity of the medical student community andencourages applications from students from diverse backgrounds and with a wide variety ofundergraduate degrees. A Biomedical Science undergraduate degree is not a requirement forentry to the MD, and all MD students are required to complete the Foundation KnowledgeCourse regardless of their prior degree.4

It reserves the right to change these criteria and processes without notice. Statementsin this Guide provide general advice about the currently applicable criteria and processesand will not be correct for future application periods. It is possible that GPA scores will, in thefuture, be incorporated into the ranking of applicants for entry into the MD and DMD. It isalso possible that the GPA requirement will be increased in the future. Applicants areadvised to consult the relevant websites for the most recent e0.html.Applicants are reminded that study in both the MD and DMD requires in-person attendanceon campus. Remote study is not available for either program.!Please read and follow the instructions in this Guide carefully. All prospectivestudents of medicine and dentistry are expected to be able to followinstructions.If you miss a step in the application process or fail to complete a stepcorrectly, your application might not be eligible for consideration.5

Domestic Admissions Guide 20232.ADMISSION CRITERIA2.1. OVERVIEWFor 2023 entry, domestic applicants must fulfil two main requirements to be eligible foradmission:1. Satisfactory performance in- Applicants must have completed, or be in the finalan eligible bachelor’syear of, a bachelor’s degree and have at least adegree (indicated by GPA)credit average at the time of application, asindicated by Grade Point Average (GPA).*- Domestic applicants must have their bachelor’s degreeassessed, and GPA calculated, by the UniversitiesAdmissions Centre (UAC) through its QualificationsAssessment Service (QAS) within the designatedperiod (see the Admissions Timeline)2. Satisfactory performance inan admissions test(GAMSAT)-Applicants must submit valid Graduate AustralianMedical School Admissions Test (GAMSAT) results withtheir application.Standard applicants must have achieved a minimumof 50 in each section of the GAMSAT.*Domestic applicants must also fulfil the following additional requirements, if applicable, to beeligible for admission:A. English languagerequirement- All applicants must meet this requirement.B. Personal Statementdemonstrating a genuineinterest, intention andaptitude for practisingmedicine in rural andregional areas (MD Dubbostream only)-MD applicants for the Dubbo stream must alsocomplete a Personal Statement in the template formprovided by the University of Sydney in order fortheir application for admission to the Dubbo stream tobe considered.*Note: Facilitated admission pathways are available to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanderapplicants and Australian rural origin applicants. Domestic Admissions Guide 2023*Your degree must be either:a) a bachelor’s degree (pass) accredited at Level 7 under the Australian QualificationsFramework or a bachelor’s degree (with honours) accredited at Level 8 under the AustralianQualifications Framework, from an Australian university or self-accrediting higher educationinstitution; orb) a bachelor’s degree from an overseas university recognised by Australia’s NationalInformation Centre for qualifications recognition in the Department of Education, Skills andEmployment, provided that the degree is equivalent to an Australian bachelor’s degree(pass or with honours).Your bachelor’s degree must be of at least 3 years full-time equivalence (FTE).You must complete your bachelor’s degree by 1 January of the year in which you intend tocommence the MD or DMD. (Note: This policy also applies to applicants who are enrolled in anaccelerated program.) Therefore, if you wish to apply in 2022 for 2023 entry, you cannotundertake an exchange or study abroad program in the second half of 2022, or enrol insummer school/intensive units in 2022-23. If you wish to do so, you will need to considerapplying for a future intake.** You must complete at least 2 years of full-time study (or equivalent) of your bachelor’sdegree (pass or honours) at the awarding institution. For example, for a degree that requires144 credit points to be completed in 3 years, 96 credit points must be completed at theawarding institution. Note: This requirement will be waived for Aboriginal and Torres StraitIslander applicants.*** If your bachelor’s degree was completed more than 10 years before 1 January of the yearfor which you are seeking enrolment, you must, in addition:1)2)3)4)5)have completed within this 10-year period, a postgraduate degree or postgraduatediploma (or equivalent) of at least one year FTE; orcomplete prior to 1 January of the year in which you intend to enrol in the MD or DMD,a postgraduate degree or postgraduate diploma (or equivalent) of at least one yearFTE; orhave been awarded within this 10-year period, a postgraduate research degree (orequivalent); orbe awarded prior to 1 January of the year in which you intend to commence the MD orDMD, a postgraduate research degree (or equivalent); orhave demonstrated to the satisfaction of the University sustained research productivityin a relevant discipline within this 10-year period.For the purposes of paragraphs (1) to (4) above, a postgraduate diploma or degree (orequivalent) means:a)b)a postgraduate degree or postgraduate diploma accredited at Level 8, 9, or 10 underthe Australian Qualifications Framework, from an Australian university or selfaccrediting higher education institution; oran overseas university recognised by Australia’s National Information Centre forqualifications recognition in the Department of Education, Skills and Employment,provided that the postgraduate degree or postgraduate diploma is equivalent to anAustralian postgraduate degree or diploma accredited at Level 8, 9, or 10.You must complete at least one year of full-time study (or equivalent) of your postgraduatedegree or postgraduate diploma at the awarding institution. Please see Part 3 ofthis Guide for details.2.4.1 THE GPA ENTRY REQUIREMENTTo be considered for admission in 2023: standard applicants must have a minimum GPA of 5 as at Thursday 9 June 2022 (Sydney,Australia time), as calculated by the Universities Admissions Centre (UAC) within thedesignated period;rural applicants must have a minimum GPA of 4.5 as at Thursday 9 June 2022 (Sydney,Australia time), as calculated by UAC within the designated period.10

Domestic Admissions Guide 2023Applicants applying under a facilitated admission pathway should refer to Part 3 of this Guidefor further information.2.4.2 THE GPA CALCULATIONPlease visit UAC’s website at criteria/tertiary-qualifications for calculation guidelines and see supplementary GPAinformation below.A) BACHELOR’S DEGREE HONOURS YEARSResearch Honours years are included in the GPA calculation for applicants who haveundertaken an additional honours year either at the institution at which their bachelor’s degreewas awarded or at another recognised institution.For the purposes of the GPA calculation, per the University of Sydney’s MD and DMD admissionrequirements, grades given to honours years that are otherwise ungraded are as follows:AwardFirst Class (1)Second Class, First Division (2.1)Second Class, Second Division (2.2)Third Class (3)Grade7654It is important to note that any grades for units of study completed in an honours year will notbe overwritten with a higher grade based on the honours level achieved. This will occur only forthose components, if any, which are reported as ungraded. See Examples (docx, 33KB) forclarification.Note: The GPA for applicants whose bachelor’s degree was awarded with integrated Honourswill be calculated on the basis of the applicant’s academic results in the bachelor’s degree, notby reference to the table above. See Examples (docx, 33KB) for clarification.B) COMBINED DEGREE PROGRAMSFor applicants who have undertaken a combined degree program, all units of study undertakenin that program will be used in the calculation of a GPA regardless of whether or not onecomponent of the degree has been abandoned, completed or conferred/awarded.A single degree completed as part of a combined degree will not be considered separately forthe calculation of the GPA under any circumstances.For example, in the event that your GPA does not meet the minimum requirement when takinginto consideration all subjects completed for your combined degree, it is NOT possible to groupsubjects according to the degree with which they were associated in order to achieve a higherGPA.Please contact UAC directly if you have any questions regarding the GPA calculation.11

Domestic Admissions Guide 20232.4.3 ADMISSIONS TEST RESULTS (GAMSAT)Applicants (except Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants) must have achieved aminimum score of 50 in each section of the GAMSAT to be eligible for admission.The scores for each section of the GAMSAT will be used to rank applicants. Overall GAMSATscores and average GAMSAT scores will not be used in the assessment and ranking ofapplications.Note: Cut-offs of overall and average GAMSAT scores in previous years are irrelevant to thecurrent admission cycle and will not be published or provided.Applications, information and sample questions for GAMSAT are available on the AustralianCouncil for Educational Research (ACER) website at http://www.gamsat.acer.edu.au/.2.4.4 DISABILITY, ILLNESS AND MISADVENTUREThe official results listed on an applicant’s transcript, and their admission test results, will betaken as the awarding and testing authorities’ assessment of the academic standards reachedby the applicant, as reflected in their GPA and GAMSAT results, taking due account ofdisability, illness and misadventure according to the authorities’ policies.2.5 ENGLISH LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTPlease refer to the “Academic Board Standards and Guidelines” on the University’s website d-structure/governance/academicboard.html#uniqueId qfcBcvnm 1 button.2.6 ARE YOU ELIGIBLE FOR ADMISSION?(1) Applicants who have not completed or will not complete an eligible bachelor’s degree by1 January 2023 (regardless of whether they have completed/will complete apostgraduate coursework diploma or degree, or have been awarded/will be awarded apostgraduate research degree by 1 January 2023) are ineligible to apply. Aboriginaland Torres Strait Islander applicants with a postgraduate degree should refer to Part 3 ofthis Guide for further information.(2) Applicants who have previously applied unsuccessfully for admission to the MD and havecommenced studies in postgraduate medicine at another university are not eligible foradmission to the MD.*For this purpose, applicants are considered to have commenced their studies on the dateon which they first enrolled in the medical program.(3) Applicants who have previously applied unsuccessfully for admission to the DMD and havecommenced studies in postgraduate dentistry at another university are not eligible foradmission to the DMD.12

Domestic Admissions Guide 2023*For this purpose, applicants are considered to have commenced their studies on the dateon which they first enrolled in the dental program.(4) Applicants for the MD or DMD who have previously accepted a conditional orunconditional offer of a place in the MD or DMD at the University of Sydney, and:a. failed to submit any outstanding documentation to proceed with an unconditional offeror to enrol; orb. enrolled in and subsequently withdrew from or discontinued that program without priorapproval from the delegated authority of the relevant school;are ineligible for admission to the MD or DMD for a period of two years from the date ofapplication or enrolment, as relevant.13

This is a binding legal document demonstrating selfidentification as an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person, declaring that they:1) are of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent;2) identify as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander; and3) are accepted as such by the community in which they live, or previously lived.Note: Proof of receipt of Abstudy will not be accepted as confirmation.If your application is audited, you will need to provide, within 7 days of our request, theoriginal proof or a certified copy of the original proof to the University.Applicants must upload the required documentation to Sydney Student at the time ofapplication. If you do not provide the appropriate documentation, your application may beprocessed as a standard application and not via the admission pathway for Aboriginal andTorres Strait Islander applicants.14

The “two-year” rule requiring applicants to havecompleted their bachelor’s degree with at least two years FTE study at their awardinginstitution will be waived; and(c)Applicants’ GPA (as calculated by UAC) should be at least 4.5, but applicants with a lowermark who can demonstrate improvement over the duration of their tertiary studies may beconsidered eligible for admission, particularly if their final year of most recent tertiarystudy demonstrates high level skills, with approval from the Advisory Committee onIndigenous Admissions (ACIA); and15

It ispreferred that applicants have achieved a minimum score of 50 in each section of theGAMSAT, and in particular that they have passed the GAMSAT III (Reasoning in Biologicaland Physical Sciences) paper. However, applicants may still be considered eligible foradmission if this result is not achieved, only with approval from the ACIA; and(e)Eligible applicants may be required to attend an interview as part of the admissionprocess.3.1.2 INDIGENOUS ENTRY PATHWAY (FOR MD APPLICANTS WITH APOSTGRADUATE DEGREE):For MD admission through the Indigenous Entry Pathway:(a) Applicants must be able to demonstrate that they are Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islanderas outlined in the University of Sydney policy.(b) Applicants must have completed a postgraduate degree within three years before 1January of the year in which the applicant is seeking admission, which is either:i.ii.a postgraduate degree accredited at level 9, or 10 (a master’s or PhD) under theAustralian Qualifications Framework, from an Australian university or self-accreditinghigher education institution; ora postgraduate degree at an overseas university recognised by Australia’s NationalInformation Centre for qualifications recognition in the Department of Education, Skillsand Employment, provided that the postgraduate degree is equivalent to anAustralian postgraduate degree accredited at Level 9, or 10.This pathway does not require applicants to have a bachelor’s degree accredited at Level7 under the Australian Qualifications Framework, or a GAMSAT result.(c)Applicants are required to have their qualifications assessed, and the Grade PointAverage (GPA) for their tertiary studies calculated, by the Universities Admissions Centre(UAC) through its Qualifications Assessment Service (QAS), and to have achieved at least aGPA of 4.5 (7-point numeric scale). However, applicants with a lower mark who candemonstrate improvement over the duration of their tertiary studies will be consideredeligible for admission, particularly if their final year of most recent tertiary studydemonstrates high-level skills.(d) Applications will be assessed on an individual basis by Sydney Medical School. AnAboriginal or Torres Strait Islander applicant who is considered to have met the criteria foreligibility:i.will be asked to submit their resumé, including an outline of education, and workexperience; andii.may be required to attend an interview as part of the admission process.Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants for the MD are encouraged to contact the Headof Indigenous Health for more information and support.
