TheChimesMONTHLY NEWSLETTERWESLEY UNITED METHODIST CHURCHJUNE 2022The 183rd Northern Illinois Annual Conference will takeplace from June 8 and 10 in Schaumburg, IL. 6 700 clergy andlaity delegates from 342 local churches in our conference willgather and make many decisions through a prayerful discernmentprocess. We will celebrate many precious ministries conferencewide. And we will appreciate the ministries of those who will beretired and celebrate with those who are commissioned andordained. Four of us from Sterling Wesley UMC will attend theannual conference: Jean Moe, Roberta Fredericks, Elisa Gatz, andme. Please have us in your prayers and support. One of the denominational characteristics is connectionalism, which means that we are technically not a denomination, butone church located in many locations. To be honest, we don’t feelit that much. We might not think we have a solid connection tothe other churches, especially those on different continents. Yet,in a big picture of the whole body, we are all strongly connectedfor the same purpose: Making Disciples of Jesus Christ andTransformation of the World. And we are deeply linked andinvolved in many collective ministries around the country and theworld. Our apportionment runs the whole body and a few dozensof denominational organizations, such as UMCOR (UnitedMethodist Committee on Relief) and GBHEM (General Board ofHigher Education and Ministry). We support hundreds ofmissionaries and hundreds of schools and hospitals on everycontinent.Continued on page 2.Wednesdays: 9:30amBible study (Fireside Room)Saturdays: 8-9:30amMen's Bible study (Fireside Room)Thursday, June 2 @9:30amGreeting Card Ministry(Fellowship Hall)June 5 Pentecost Sunday(Wear red, pink,, or blue!)June 8-10 NIC Annual Conference(Schaumburg, IL)June 13—16at Wesley UMC 9-11am each dayJune 19—25 Joy Camp at CampReynoldswood (Dixon)June 25 Men’s Group works withHabitat for Humanity in Dixon, IL8am-12pm

Continuedfrompg.1 message(PastorPaul’scont.)Many of us know that our denomination has been dealing with a hot potato: whether we would be inclusive tothe LGBTQ siblings, especially the ordination. This topic has been on the table since 1972 at the General Conference.(For those who might need some explanation, the General Conference is the top legislative body of our whole church. It takes place every four years with about 2,500 people from over 100 countries worldwide.) The Traditional Plan wasaccepted at the Special General Conference in 2019. The General Conference 2020 was postponed to 2021 and again to2022. Then, due to the variant and worldwide vaccination, it was announced in early March that the GeneralConference was postponed again to 2024. A week later, a group of people, the Wesleyan Covenant Association, whoproposed the Traditional Plan, declared that they would disaffiliate from the United Methodist and launch a newdenomination. It might be complex and confusing. Yet, I hope you have proper information because there are somerumors about it. Please find Bishop Hopkins’ letters, “Whatever It Takes to Love Someone” and “Are UnitedMethodists going to eAll the theological debate and disagreement might cause some confusion and division. Yet, I commend you tolisten to one another. If you find someone in our Wesley family who have different thoughts, please listen to them withan open mind. We’ve been together in Christ’s love for years and gone through the Pandemic with ceaseless prayers. One topic cannot easily define others and divide us into two or three divisions. Please listen! If you have any questions, please stop by the office. I love to talk with anyone interested or concerned. And please know that, whether you feel itor not, you have power in your words. Your words can hurt and tear down somebody or build others up. Let us chooseto build up one another. I hope you continue to think of the power of your words, and we will have a sermon series onthe power of the words in June. Let us hold one another in our love and build up one another.
