page 2The ChimesFebruary 2014SENIOR MOMENTSA CONVERSATION ABOUT GRACE[between God and an “old guy” who shall remain anonymous]by Chuck BoatmanGod: “We’re just a few weeks into the new year, and you’ve broken all those resolutions you made on January1. Got anything to say about it?”‘Old guy’: “Unfortunately, yes. I’m a sinner in what I say and do, and I’m surrounded by people just likeme!” [Isaiah 6.5]FEBRUARYGod: “Well, here’s some good news. My grace is saving you because you believe in me, not because of all thosefancy resolutions you make every year.” [Ephesians 2.8]‘Old guy’: “Hey, that is good news! Then I can just go ahead and live it up—at least as much as an ‘old guy’can—huh? I get it: the more I sin, the more you can show your grace! It’s a win-win situation.” [Romans 6.1]God: “You’re missing the point here: remember that faith in me we talked about a moment ago? If you reallybelieve in me, every day life starts with those broken resolutions ‘kicking in’ again.” [Romans 6.2,12,13]‘Old guy’: “Now I’m depressed! I know I’m missing the mark. You talk about starting over again every day—itseems like I’ve been a sinner since the day I was born! There’s no hope for me. I’m a complete mess!” [Psalm51.3-5]God: “I see why you might feel that way. You’ve been around awhile . . . take a look in the mirror . . . yougroan when you stand up . . . you need more naps these days , , , and more important, you’ve left a trail ofspiritual debris behind you. You are a mess! But here’s the good news: the fact you recognize all this meansmy grace is renewing your heart . . . almost in spite of you!” [2 Corinthians 4.16]‘Old guy’: “In my heart of hearts, that is what I want. I want to sing again! I want the wisdom that should bemine by now. Let that renewal process start again today . . . please!” [Psalm 51.6,10]God: “Here’s my promise to you: if I raised Jesus’ body from the dead—and I did—I can put a new spirit inyou and give you hope—and I will! [1 Peter 1.21]***“TRANSITIONS” – are you facing the loss of someone dear in the foreseeable future? There’s hope and helpavailable. February 2014The Chimespage 3From the Desk of Beth Ann Murray. We Spell “LOVE”T-I-M-E!We have a motto around here at SonRise Christian Fellowship. And that is, PASSION. Passion is behind every lesson we teach, every word spoken to a child.Every direction and every hug is given with passion. This takes T-I-M-E to develop, we need to pray for Jesus’heart to replace ours. Then we need to recognize thatour attitude makes a difference in a child’s life. It takesT-I-M-E to develop relationships, and that’s what makesour program so beautiful. We always say kind wordswhen they are needed because we recognize TODAY is agift—a precious present—a day you can make a difference in a child’s life.God has given us 1,440 minutes in a day to helpbuild relationships with each other and whom we serve. He gives us multiple chances to teach children aboutJesus and His Love. So this month of February, themonth of LOVE, look for children who may need someextra blooming time. Use your kind words, and showthem love and support. Give them your T-I-M-E.This is the month to show someone you LOVETHEM. As the director, I try to personally recognize ourSunday school teachers, Los Amigos and Awana volunteers. But it’s a wonderful thing when our church familynotices, especially if you are a parent of a child participating in one of our programs. These “thank you’s” areGod’s way of saying, “The parents are watching—thankyou.” So give a hug to one of our Children’s Ministryvolunteers and let them know what a good job they aredoing for His Kingdom.Boy Scouts MeetAll Mondays in the CAC6:30 p.m.For information, please callRhonda Hill,Chartered Rep. ofSonRise Christian FellowshipChurch Troop 755MARK YOUR CALENDARS!!!(760) 504-6808*Preschool is almost at full capacity for enrollment. February 2014The Chimespage 5A Missions Updateby Gayle KottSo it's difficult for them to repair boats, fixor re-build houses, cook food, or maintain sanitationand hygiene without these basic supplies. Some ofthe most-requested items [besides food] are clothes, cooking supplies, and basic building supplies likenails, etc. As of December 1, the R-44 helicopteralone had transported nearly 35,000 pounds of reliefsupplies. As of December 8, all the mission aircraftcombined have transported upwards of 90,000pounds of goods.Typhoon Haiyan hit the Philippines with amazing destructive force, killing thousands, and devastating tens of thousands, leaving them homeless, hungryand grieving. Yet in the face of all of this darknessthere is light. People from around the world have joinedin the efforts to bring relief to these islands.Steffan and Julie Pyle and their family are missionaries currently serving in Asia Pacific. Steffan is apilot, who was called away from his duties of ferryingmissionaries to islands in the area where he serves tobring desperately needed food and supplies to isolatedislands of the Philippines affected by the typhoon. Evengetting the permits required for this humanitarian effort was no easy task, requiring a day of flying andwaiting to obtain them. Once the necessary permitswere obtained, Steffan had to island hop to reach hisdestination, sometimes flying as much as 4 hours at atime over open water in his helicopter. He and otherpilots went to seemingly forgotten villages in the remote reaches of the Philippines, sometimes having toland on debris strewn beaches. Due to the isolated locations he flew into, there were days when he and Juliecould not communicate. Through it all, Julie continuedin her sweet quiet way to look after their children, andminister to those in her community with her loving actions, as she is forbidden by law to verbally witness tothose outside the Christian community. While food andsupplies are critical in the remote regions of the Philippines, the ultimate goal, of course, is that through theselfless, loving actions of Steffan and Julie and thoselike them, people who have never known the Lord, oreven heard of Him, will come to Him and receive salvation.Another pilot had this to say in an email: “Insome cases the people were only left with the clothes ontheir backs and whatever they had in their hands, asthe tidal surge and winds washed everything else out tosea.“We cannot discount the role of prayer inany effective ministry in the Philippines. Our guysand their wives and children need your continuedprayers. Many flights are over open water. Thousands of people need basic supplies. The isolatedisland people need to see the caring kindness of ourgreat God. Keep praying.”On behalf of their family, Julie asks continued prayers for Steffan and their ministry, as wellas for the people in the Philippines, and thanks Sonrise Christian Fellowship for their partnership overthe years. The money we as a church body donate totheir ministry helps fund miracles.Fun Ways to ShowHis Love1. Help someone in need.2. Donate your time to a humanitarian cause.3. Listen to someone you might be “too busy”to make time for.4. Smile inside and out at those who don’tsmile back.5. Speak only with the “law of kindness” onyour tongue.

The Chimespage 8February 2014Love.Makes the World Go ‘Round By Cyndi GalleyDoes Money Make the World Go Round? No.but Love Does!Songs sing of it often! Love — It Makes the World Go ‘Round.Love is All You Need at least that’s what theBeatles professed—but is that really true? According to the Word of God, it IS! In fact—His Word tells us thatlove never fails! How many times have we found ourselves in situations where it is easier to try to defend, or respond with thegoal of protecting yourself in mind? Whether it is persecution, wrongful accusation, being mistreated, misunderstood, betrayed or possibly even having been set-up, the Word of God is clear.—we are to respond in love.We live in an imperfect world, and yet, One who was perfect sums up the way were are to respond, in oneword: LOVE. It is in those letters of red we read Jesus saying, “ You have heard that it was said, ‘Love yourneighbor[a] and hate your enemy.’ 44 But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,45 that you may be children of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, andsends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. 46 If you love those who love you, what reward will you get?Are not even the tax collectors doing that? 47 And if you greet only your own people, what are you doing morethan others? Do not even pagans do that? 48 Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.”Matthew 5:43-48 (NIV)In many cases, responding in His love will not be the first inclination, we are after all, flesh! How do we respondin His love, rather than reacting in ourselves? Ask the God of love to give you grace, strengthening you to loveas He does. Meditate on His Word so that it becomes life to you, your mind and your heart! Not only will youwalk in joy &peace, but allowing Him to move on your behalf will have much better results than you takingmatters into your own hands. May this month of love be a daily reminder that we, too, can love a love thatcan only come from the God who is.LOVE! Here are some gentle reminders from scripture to help us keepmaking the world go round! So go ahead spread a little—or a whole lotta.LOVE!“If I speak in the tongues[a] of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or aclanging cymbal. 2 If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I havea faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. 3 If I give all I possess to the poor andgive over my body to hardship that I may boast, [b] but do not have love, I gain nothing. 4 Love is patient, love iskind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is noteasily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It alwaysprotects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. 8 Love never fails.” 1 Corinthians 13:1-8a (NIV)“Hatred stirs up conflict, but love covers over all wrongs.” Prov. 10:12 (NIV)“By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” John 13:35 (NIV)“This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives forour brothers and sisters.” 1 John 3:16 (NIV)Newsletter Deadline for the March 2014 issue:*Thursday, February 16th, 9:00 a.m.A Reminder: Please include your name and contact information (email, phone, etc.) withyour submitted article.
