Reading Plan Summary & Memory MarkersReading PlanThe purpose of this workbook is to help you learn thelayout of your Bible and the how familiar verses fit into thecontext of their book. The reading plan is based onProfessor Grant Horner’s Bible Reading System in whichten chapters are read daily from ten different books. Afterone of the ten sections or list is entirely completed, thereading of the section is started from the beginning again.However, the readings in the other sections continue untilthey reach the end at a different time. As a result, somesections of the Bible will be read more frequently. Thetopics and themes in a book overlap with other books atdifferent locations every time the section is repeated.Your knowledge of God and application of the Bible to yourlife can drastically increase with this reading method.A key part of the plan is to use a moderate speed readingtechnique that enables you to read through a section withease and without stopping. Since the reading speed ismoderate a chapter will take about three minutes to readwith a total of about thirty minutes per day of reading.If the section is difficult or very long, simply increase therate of speed from moderate to quick or skimming the textif needed.2
Reading Plan Summary & Memory MarkersThe key is to read the sections and not get distracted byresearch or other topics. Often times there are questionswhile reading but they can be written down in theworkbook and researched at a later time.Memory MarkersThe retention of scripture and verse locations will comenaturally and without effort in a very short amount oftime. It is likely you will start knowing some of the pagenumbers and location of a few key verses within thesecond and third month of reading.On the pages for each daily reading, there is room forwriting notes which will help retention. The notes shouldonly take a second or two to write and mainly serve as amemory trigger or marker. The content of the notes is upto you and some items might include: The page number of where the chapter begins.A favorite verse in the section.A paragraph header from the text.An observation or key thought.A question or word to do research on at a latertimeHow to Use the Workbook1. Read a section every day and check or cross offcompleted chapters. Per Professor Grant’sinstructions, it’s ok to read more or less than ten3

Write the page number after each chapter.3. In addition to the page number, add a note,observation, or comment for each chapter.1. Example of Completed ChaptersLooking up a Page NumberThere is a section in the workbook to help look up pagenumbers before turning to the chapter. The purpose ofunderstanding page numbers is to help coordinate thelayout of the Bible in relation to the book sequence,4

In a sense, it can help changethe thought process so verses are understood by theirlocation on a page and how they fit into a book and outlinerather than only by chapter and verse.2. Page Number ReferenceThe section of the workbook is called the Page NumberReference and is located before the Reading Plan. Itconsists of a table of contents of the Books of the Bible andthe amount of chapters per book. There is also a sectionto write the starting page number for each book.Before turning to a chapter, consider writing down thepage number for the chapter from memory. Most likely,this will not be possible so the next step is to check thePage Number Reference section, get the page the bookbegins at, and then add the estimated number of chapters5
Reading Plan Summary & Memory Markersto determine the page number. For example, if I amreading James 2 but do not know what page number it is, Ican check the Page Number Reference to see the bookstarts on page 1230 and then estimate the chapter is onpage 1231.6
Selecting a Bible and Text LayoutBibleThe Bible to use for this reading plan should be yourfavorite and primary Bible that you will use for possibly therest of your life.Selecting Bible translation is a personal preference.However, keep in mind that you will likely find it difficult tochange translations or Bibles after several months ofreading.Text LayoutAfter the translation, the next important choice in yourBible is the text layout. The text layout is critical tomemorizing the location of verses and understanding howscriptures relate to each other.It is important to find a layout that will be available forpurchase in a quality binding since there will be a lot ofeffort invested in learning the layout and verse locations.Popular text layouts can be purchased in different gradesof quality.The binding of the Bible is important and the best option isto purchase a Smyth-Sewn binding. Glued bindings shouldbe avoided since the Bible will quickly fall apart and needrepair.7
Selecting a Bible and Text LayoutA strategy to find a quality or reputable layout is to reviewBibles bound by R. L. Allan Bibles. While the R. L. Allanquality of the binding and paper is one of the highest, thesame text block design can often be purchased fromdifferent publishers at an affordable price. After the layoutis tested and proven, a quality Bible that will not fall apartcan be purchased at a later time.Items to consider when selecting the text layout include: Verse by Verse format or Paragraph formatSingle Column or Double ColumnLocation of References (Bottom, Middle, Side)Font Point SizeBinding, Cover, and Paper QualityLocation of Page NumbersItems to avoid when selecting a layout or Bible: Glued bindingsCompact Bibles if they are difficult to readSmall fontsMy preference for a Bible is the New American StandardBible (NASB) Ultrathin Large Print Reference Bible whichcan be purchased for 35 in genuine leather, 99 incalfskin leather, or for 230 in goatskin leather from R. L.Allan. The paper quality is highest in the R. L. Allan editionhowever the 99 calfskin edition has excellent paper andlimited bleed through.8
Selecting a Bible and Text LayoutBelow is an example of the double column and verse byverse format. This layout might feel more technical andless intuitive than a paragraph layout.3. NASB Large Print Ultrathin Reference Bible (Not to Scale)Other layouts that seem to work well include the: ESV Large Print Thinline Edition in a doublecolumn, paragraph layout.The Cambridge Clarion Reference Bibles in singlecolumn, paragraph layout.The NASB Side-Column Reference Bible in a singlecolumn, verse by verse layout.Below is an example of the NASB Side-Column ReferenceBible (SCR) layout which comes in many types of binding.9

NASB Side-Column Reference Bible (Not to Scale)A simple exercise to understand paragraphs is to compareabout four different translations and open them to achapter like Acts 22 where the chapter begins in a middleof a paragraph. Each translation will have a differenttechnique or nuance for displaying the chapter within aparagraph and displaying the new paragraph afterwards.10
Selecting a Bible and Text LayoutElectronic BiblesElectronic Bibles are useful and an excellent resource. Inregards to functionality, Bible applications are anindispensable resource for research and their value as asupplemental tool will increase with this reading plan. If atablet is used for the reading plan, it is possible to use thePDF version of popular text layouts on a tablet in order toavoid changing Bible layouts. The publisher of the Bibleshould be contacted to determine what options areavailable for PDF formats. After a your primary Biblelayout is understood, other Bibles, books, and electronictools become more useful.5. Testing a PDF file on an iPad11
Selecting a Bible and Text LayoutAfter years of using and testing electronic Bibles acrossmultiple platforms and devices, my conclusion is the bestelectronic format is in a PDF file format in combinationwith a PDF editor like PDF Expert on the iPad. This is duein part because PDF editors carry most of the samefunctionality as Bible apps while maintaining the textlayout across devices.Marking Your BibleMarking your Bible is a personal choice. If you chose tomark your Bible, be aware that it will slow down yourreading. Also, I would recommend starting off with aninexpensive binding to test the method and markings thatwill be used.Circling the verse number or adding a mark to the side ofthe verse for reference can greatly increase memorizationof verse locations on a page.6. Selecting a Bible and Text LayoutAn excellent choice for Bible pens is the Sakura PigmaMicron Pen in size 005 or .02 mm which is what was usedin the previous image. The ink has limited bleed throughand the thin tip allows small writing which does notdistract from the text.13
Moderate Speed ReadingKey PointsThere are many techniques on speed reading. Whilereading, your rate of speed will vary depending on thetime of day, your alertness, and concentration. Theimportance is to read through the text without letting yourmind wander or slowing down your rate.Some key points to consider when reading at a moderatespeed include:1. If possible, try not to silently vocalize words inyour mind while reading.2. Look at the first and last word in each line only (orthe second work and second to last work in SingleColumn layouts). Let your mind register the otherwords as you skim over the line. This will also helpprevent the silent speech or sub vocalization ofwords in your mind.3. If needed, use your finger, a pencil, or headmovement to help move your eyes down the pageat a steady rate. Avoid going back to previous linesor sentences.14
Moderate Speed Reading4. Do not worry about comprehension or retention,your brain will catch up to your reading rate andyour comprehension will increase.5. Try to avoid reading lying down or while sleepy.Read in a comfortable position with enough light.6. Preview the chapter before reading and alsoquickly review the previous day’s reading. Thereading rate will increase the second and thirdtime through a section.7. Don’t hesitate to adjust your reading rate toaccommodate your time limitations or when thereis a lot of interest in the section.Within three months there will most likely be aconsiderable notice in the increased reading speed andincreased comprehension of the material.15
