About the Japan FoundationThree Main ActivitiesThe Japan Foundation was established in October1972 as a government-affiliated special corporation withthe objective of promoting international cultural exchangethrough the implementation of comprehensive programs.On October 2003, the Foundation was relaunched as anindependent administrative institution under the Ministry ofForeign Affairs.With its global network consisting of the Tokyoheadquarters, a Kyoto office, two domestic Japaneselanguage institutes (the Japan Foundation JapaneseLanguage Institute, Urawa; and the Japan FoundationArt and Cultural ExchangeCreating opportunities to encounter the valuesembodied in Japanese art and Japanese lifeJapanese arts—fine art, music, theater,literature, and films—and everyday culture such asfood and fashion inspire interest in Japan. They giveinsights into how Japanese people think and act,and communicate feelings and emotions withoutneeding to understand Japanese. The JapanFoundation creates opportunities for encounterswith Japanese art and culture, running programsfor international contact between practitioners.Japanese-Language Institute, Kansai) and 22 overseasoffices in 21 countries, the Foundation operates a numberof programs, often in partnership with other organizations,focusing mainly on three areas: Arts and Cultural Exchange,Japanese-Language Education Overseas, and JapaneseStudies and Intellectual Exchange.Based on a government endowment of 78 billionyen, the Foundation’s activities are financed by annualgovernment subsidies, investment revenue, and donationsfrom the private sector. As of March 31, 2011, the JapanFoundation has 230 staff members.Japanese-Language EducationOverseasIncreasing the number of people who speakJapanese increases the number of people whounderstand JapanStudents of Japanese gain understanding andappreciation of Japan in addition to knowledge ofthe language. The Japan Foundation encouragesteaching of the Japanese language around theworld, and ensures the quality of the education thatstudents receive. Topacademics are introduced to Japan, giving theJapanese people access to world level knowledgeand insights into global intellectual trends. This givesthe international scholars a deeper understandingof Japan, fosters the development of sharedperceptions, and facilitates discussion of sharedissues.

Message from the Presidentin major cultural projects such as the Japan Festival heldin London in 1991. I am proud to have been a supporterof the Japan Foundation and its activities throughout thattime.I was selected as the President of the JapanFoundation under its first open, highly transparentapplication system. I am determined to respond witha grave sense of responsibility to the high hopes andexpectations of you all.Today, a swelling tide of change is sweeping acrossJapan and the world. At a time when the Japanesegovernment faces extremely serious fiscal conditions andreconstruction of the nation from the devastation of theMarch 11 disaster has become an urgent and challengingtask, the relevance of international cultural exchangeprograms and projects is being questioned once again.Japan needs the strength that is created by culture andits exchanges. It needs to share this uniquely Japanesestrength with the rest of the world. Japan’s positionhas been undergoing changes amidst a swiftly shiftinginternational situation. The people and organizationsinvolved in diplomatic affairs and international culturalexchange activities have become increasingly diverse, andthe role of these exchange activities itself has drasticallychanged. The Japan Foundation promoted a wide variety of projects in fiscal 2010 to deepen theunderstanding of Japan. It introduced Japanese arts, theater, publications, videos, andlifestyle to the world. It organized programs designed to help people learn about Japanthrough the Japanese language, and to foster intellectual exchange and exchanges ofspecialists in Japanese studies.
