ALL ABOUT TERRY STEPHENSONDave Kozlowskiof Baylor enjoyed my introductionand establishment of Tifeagle typegrasses. Worked with local andState agencies to reduce usagecharges and get refunds. Moved toFlorida and became assistant Superin July of 2006. There I learned theins and outs of Tifdwarf greens and419 fairways. Also managed a largecrew while assisting the Mechanic, the Irrigation Technician andchemical spraying tech. The purpose of this, and other interviews tocome, is to provide our members with anin-depth look at our staff. The interviewbelow is with our Golf CourseSuperintendent Terry Stephenson.1. Where were you born and wheredid you go to school?I was Born in San Angelo, TexasI went to High School: Rankin,TexasI graduated from Sul Ross StateUniversity, Alpine, Texas2. What were your aspirations growingup? To be a Pro golfer. I played in highschool and college3. How did you first get into the turfbusiness?I helped a friend, who was aSuperintendent, while in college. Iworked part-time at Hogan ParkGolf Course in Midland, Texas. Ialso worked for a friend at KermitGolf Course in Kermit, Texas.4. How many years have you been atthis, and where have you workedand what did you do?I worked at Mexia Country Club in1984 as a superintendent/GeneralManager. In April of 1989 I beganworking at Rolling Oaks Golf Club, asmall club in Waco, Texas andwithin 5 years became GM for theentire facility. Transferred to BearRidge Golf Club, where UniversityIn 2007 I transferred to Wekiva GolfClub in Longwood working for SamFloyd as Superintendent. There I had 8 full time staffmembers, Tifeagle greens and 419fairways that were over seeded inwinter with Rye grass and PoaTrivals.5. How did you end up here atMonarch? In 2010 Sam invited me to join himat The Monarch Golf Club asSuperintendent. All my previousexperiences have put into playhere. We now have the addedbenefit of the New Toro OsmacIrrigation System which we enjoy.6. What credential do you have?I started the Brazos Valley TurfgrassAssociation in the Central Texasarea. It was a means of identifyingcommon problems and solutions. Iwas also a member of TexasTurfgrass Association for about 20years. In Florida, I’ve been amember of the CFGCSA (CentralFlorida Golf Course SuperintendentsAssociation) for 13 years. Duringthis time, I’ve been a BoardMember of the CFGCSA in2013/2014, Vice President2015/2016, and President for2016/2017, and past president foryears 2017/2018 and 2018/2019.I’m also on the board (State Level)8

of the Florida Golf Coursesuperintendent since 2017.7. What support do you have indiagnosing problems and capturingsavings? We’ve been fortunate enough tohave direct support from Dr. BertMcCarty and Bob Cross of ClemsonUniversity. They are on site manytimes a year doing evaluations andanalysis. Additionally, we are oneof several golf clubs that SherylWells from the Bayer ChemicalCompany gives free samples of testand proven chemicals with supportmonitoring. We have saved manythousands of dollars in chemicalswith that collaboration. We alsohave contacts from the Universityof Florida.principal means of controllinggoosegrass. Superintendentselecting to control goosegrass withpre, post, and reemergenceherbicides now have a small groupof herbicides from which to choose.None of the options are labeled foruse on putting greens and many caninduce transient turfgrass injuryeven when applied under optimalconditions. Goosegrass has becomemore challenging in recent years.Once confined to more southernstates, goosegrass has become acommon problem in states as farnorth as New Jersey andPennsylvania. A promising spottreating herbicide, MSMA has beenprohibited in FLORIDA. Researchconducted at UF concluded that soilcompaction and the lack ofbermudagrass were the majorfactors in goosegrass infestation.Further research shows theresistance of repeated herbicidesand that chemical diversity iscritically important.I’d like recognize two supportpeople I met when I moved toFlorida: Ralph White a consultantfor 50 years and Barry Troutman aVP with Valley Crest for 25 years.Other savings come about when webuy seed, chemicals, and the like inbulk with an early order program8. Why have goose grass and otherundesirable weeds become agrowing problem over the lastseveral years?Don’t get me started. TO THEREADER – TERRY PROVIDED A 4PAGE ARTICLE FROM HIS JULY ISSUEOF GOLFDOM.COM MAGAZINE.Here is a summation without thedozens of chemical names.Goosegrass is a problematic annualgrassy weed found on golf courseturf across the United States insummer. Goosegrass is mostcommonly found in highlytrafficked areas on golf coursessuch as cart paths entry/exit areas.Preemergence herbicides are aTerry said he has had some successwith an experimental herbicide thathe has tested and spotted targetedthe goosegrass on parts of theputting area #4 and #11. He also isreplacing the normal Springaerification process in with Dry Jetsoil enrichment that helped lastyear. It’s a costly process but willrejuvenate the soil, push out thegoosegrass and other invasiveweeds. A healthy Bermuda grass willin fact not give outside intruders achance.9. Do you have all the budget, staff, and equipment you need?Any golf course Superintendent canalways use more staff, a biggerbudget, better equipment.9

However, we work within eachclub’s budget.10. What does a normal work day looklie for you?I work 4 am – 2 pm.First hour is paperwork5 – mow greens7 – water/spray/check course9 – spot spray/irrigation work/fixany green issues11 – fertilize/spray/spot water11. Do you feel that we will have toreplace our greens? No, if we do things to improve thesubsoil, such as DryJett12. What’s the most difficult part ofyour job?Staffing13. You live quite a distance from hereand have to get an early start. Whatmotivates you to get going everyday?I enjoy the job. I like to see thesunrise. I’m a morning person. Iwas taught well by my father.14. Are you cross-training yourassistant, James, to learn thecomplete job?Yes.15. Will James have the contracts youhave fostered when you choose toretire? Some of them. They are getting oldtoo. He will develop new contacts.16. Your son is also in the business. Doyou talk shop when you see him?Tell us about that.Yes, we talk regularly.
