The illustration depicts a Vergen interior - a type of an ante chamber connecting several corridors. The chamber has a highceiling and is well lit due to the wide windows. Though it's nota representational building, the tall walls are richly ornamented- the floor, frames and even stone ledges of the supporting struc ture are adorned with distinctive wicker-work. We assumed thatdwarves build things be huge in scope, but they still don't neglectaesthetic qualities. Their style is heavily geometric, as seen inboth architecture and ornamentation, and presented on the illus trations in this chapter.591

CHARACTERS SORCERERS AND SORCERESSES- In my day - said Yarpen Zigrin - warlocks sat in their towers reading learnedtomes and stirring the contents ofmelting pots with ladles. They didn't loafabout warriors, they didn't interfere withour business. And they didn't bump andgrind before men's eyes.- The bumping and grinding, truth betold, is done with quite an arse -saidDandelion while tuning his lute.Andrzej Sapkowski, The Limit ofPossibilitySorcerers and sorceresses are an inher ent element of most fantasy worlds. Theyplay a special part in the Witcher universe,as they're a powerful faction that influ ences the politics and status quo of theNorthern Kingdoms. We wanted to makeprominent, distinctive sorcerer perso nas. They were supposed to look a biteccentric, but also to command respect.Bands, trimming and scrolls covered inmagical symbols signify their status andprofession.Sorceresses are more eager to usetheir powers and abilities in order to slowdown the aging process and to emphasizetheir beauty, so most look no older thanthirty-something. Their clothes, whichare a variant of courtly attire, are bothfashionable and provocative at the sametime. We can see some versions on theneighboring page. Sorcerers wear armorelements, such as epaulettes or gloves, mainly as decoration. These still serve tounderline the aggressive and destructiveaspects of the powers they wield, just asmundane weapons do.1130

Baptism of FireRotfiends are the distant relatives of ghouls,- creatures feeding on human and animal corpses. When making this creature, our graphic artists hada lot of leeway to give it as disgusting a presence aspossible. They achieved it by combining an ana tomically nearly human appearance with disgustingdeformities. The rotfiend's head draws attention immediately. Its eyes disappear in folds of white, dough-like flesh. Its maw is a gaping hole filled with crooked yellowteeth. The back of its skull, covered with outgrowths,is swollen with the gases gathering inside. The creait has in common with any living creature. The rotfiend's body is almost skinless, revealing knots of1170
