Locally, ourcommunity must prioritize being cleaner, greener and more resilient by followingthe waste management hierarchy. Formore information on how to reduce, reuse and recycle, call the Solid WasteManagement Division at 402-441-8215 orvisit recycle.lincoln.ne.gov.Waste reduction is not a newconcept. Each day offers an opportunity to reduce waste.Consider adding these reusableitems to your daily routine: water bottle coffee mug food container utensils shopping bagReuse helps reduce carbon emissions bydecreasing the demand to make and ship newitems. When purchasing an item, consider the lifeexpectancy of the products being purchased andwhere they will end up once discarded. Recycling ContaminationRecycling becomes contaminated when unacceptable materials such asplastic bags, electronics and other non-recyclable materials are placed in therecycling bins. It is also considered contamination when recyclable materialsare incorrectly placed in the recycling bin such as food left in containers andrecyclables contained in plastic bags.Recycling contamination is the primary reason recyclables end up in thelandfill and is the biggest threat to a successful recycling program.Don’t spoil your recycling. When recycling contamination occurs, you riskhaving the entire bin sent to the landfill. Do not assume your recyclingprocessor is able to sort out all of the recycling contamination. Plastic bagsclog recycling equipment and broken glass contaminates cardboard andother paper being recycled. To know whether an item is recyclable, check the guidelines on the container, call your recycling collector or consult the Solid Waste Management Division at 402-441-8215,recycle.lincoln.ne.gov. When in doubt, throw it out.All Lincoln garbagecollectors offer recyclingservices. Call yourcollector for moreinformation on curbsiderecycling.TOP 5 CONTAMINANTSPLASTIC FILMSPlastic film can only be recycled atparticipating grocery and retail stores;never in curbside recycling bins.GLASSSome single-stream curbside recyclingmay not accept glass. If glass breaks inthe collection process, it can contaminatecardboard and other paper products. Oneof the best ways to recycle glass is throughpublic recycling sites.FOOD RESIDUERecyclables must be clean and dry. Foodresidue in containers can ruin the entireload of recyclables, causing it to go to thelandfill.NON-RECYCLABLE PLASTICSDo not put single-use plastics, such asstyrofoam, utensils, toothpaste tubes,wax-layered fast food cups, straws andpackaging in recycling container.TEXTILESTextiles can only be recycled atparticipating designated sites; never incurbside recycling bins.6WHAT IS RECYCLABLE?Scan to view publicrecycling sitesCommunity recyclingstandards may differ.Locally acceptablematerials includeplastics #1-5, aluminum, glass, steel cans, cardboard, paper boardand paper (news, office andmixed).COMPOSTING IS RECYCLINGCompost improves the health of soil byimproving nutrient content and moistureretention on topsoil.
