These homeowners purchased a small twobedroom house in East Hampton Village wherethey planned to live year-round. The house wasbuilt in the 1960’s and only had a half basement. To accommodate their needs, the home needed to beupdated and expanded. A master suite, full basement, open floor plan and detached garage were on thefamily’s wish list. The team at Benco Construction, led by Patrick Bentivegna, designed a modern space in the heart of the Hamptons. Thefirst step in the remodel was to dig out for the full basement.Second step; an addition to the side of the home to make roomfor the new master suite. “We also pushed out the back ofthe house four feet to increase the size of the kitchen andmake space for the new fireplace in the great room,” saidBentivegna. The renovation also added three bathrooms and apowder room to the home. The completed space features a contemporary designwith modern materials set against a white backdrop. Thecenterpiece of the home is the European high efficiencyfireplace with a riveted aged steel surround in the great room.ON THE EAST ENDwww.nari-ny.org13

THIS KITCHEN FINALIKE ‘US’BY ALEXANDRA YOUNGSituated in the heart of an open floor plan, the original kitchen felt anything but.“I needed the room to emulate the same warmth this family emits,” designerKaren Young of Coastal Cabinet Works said thoughtfully. “The homeowner wantedto enjoy more time in the kitchen together as a family, and being a mother myself, Ihad the vision to make it happen.”To make the room more welcoming, Karen swappedthe former dark finish with lighter colors for a bright, refreshing space. The original layout made the roomfeel secluded and dark, filled with unnecessary wallsand an L-shaped island that confined the kitchen.16NYC/LI NARI Design & RemodelTaking down a short wall next to the French doorslet in natural light. Karen’s redesign of the island’sshape further opened the room. With the extra, more accessible seating that the new islandprovided, there was no need for a kitchen table.

LLY FEELSPhotos Courtesy of Coast Cabinet WorksThis allowed the designer to stretch the island into thisspace and create a casual hang out spot the whole familycould enjoy. The open shelves further tie into the open aesthetic. Theyare the same finish as the island, bringing a rustictouch to the perimeter cabinets. “The stain is a verywarm and inviting color, so this kitchen was aparticularly fitting place to use it,” Karen said. Now thehomeowner has a place to display some personalitywith space for glassware and, most importantly, family photos. “Going into this project, I don’t thinkI realized what a difference remodeling our kitchenwould make in having our house truly feel like a home.It finally feels like us,” said the homeowner.www.nari-ny.org17

Photos Courtesy of Island Kitchens & BathsDREAM KITCHENIN TO A REALITY?HHow Do YouTurn YourBY CHARLES A. TESTA, CKBDow frequently have you wondered aboutwhat your dream kitchen would look like?Have you thought that your current kitchenis too small, cramped, poorly organized andinefficient? No matter how long you have thoughtabout this, you cannot think of any way to improve it?Do you believe that the only way you can alter yourkitchen is by either knocking down walls or buildingan extension for your house? How often do you lookat photos of kitchens and think to yourself, “I wish thiswas my kitchen. What a pleasure it must be to haveone like this!” “I really want to renovate my kitchen, but I don’t know where to start.” These are frequentcomments that I hear from homeowners when theyare considering a kitchen renovation. Many of the homes here on Long Island were builtprior to the ‘80’s. Most of these houses were insubdivisions that usually provided only the basics forkitchens. The typical kitchen consisted of a porcelainsteel sink with a stainless steel rim, a 30” rangeand maybe a space large enough for a 30” widerefrigerator. If the development was a bit moreupscale, a dishwasher would have been included.www.nari-ny.org19

Microwave ovens were not yet in fashion. Typically, there was an area where the family would have atable to have meals. These tables were usedfor many functions besides meals: homeworkassignments, arts and crafts projects, sewing tablesand bill paying areas.Kitchens have certainly changed over the years! Nowthe kitchen is the multifunctional hub of the home;food preparation, cooking, storage, event planning, message center, charging station and bill paying aresome of the many activities that take place here.Appliances today have become much moresophisticated than many homeowners are awareof. They are full of technology that not only can beoperated by your smart phone, but can contact themanufacturer when there is a malfunction and will letyou know when it needs to be serviced. Most of the homeowners who are intending torenovate their kitchens, want to be able to perform allof the activities that their lifestyle demands. Not onlydo they want to prepare everyday meals, but also tocreate a feast for their family and friends to enjoy. They want to feel great about their new surroundingsand they do not want to be disappointed.Ah, but how do we get to this place? The pathwayfrom thinking about how to renovate your existingkitchen and the journey to the finished resultcan be a rough one! There are many kitchencabinet showrooms that you can visit to inspectthe quality and types of cabinets available: traditional, transitional, contemporary and all the styles andprice points. When you couple all the variationsand colors, the selection can become mindboggling! This is the time where it is best toseek professional help.Depending upon thecomplexity of your project and the scope of work, there are three professional organizations thatcan provide you with assistance: an NKBA certifiedkitchen designer, a NARI certified contractor andif you are moving walls, doors or windows, an AIAcertified architect. The National Kitchen &Bath Association (NKBA)has designers who arerequired to have years ofexperience and completed various national levelsof testing and have beencertified as: AssociateKitchen & Bath Designer(AKBD), Certified Kitchen &Bath Designers (CKBD) andCertified Master Kitchen& Bath Designers (CMKBD).These designers areextremely knowledgeablein regard to: kitchenplanning, building structure, plumbing, electrical andlighting systems, appropriate clearances andsafety guidelines, productand color selection to namea few. A designer will bringyou through a thoroughinterview process that includes lifestyle questionsthat include: what type of20NYC/LI NARI Design & Remodel

As the design process continues, there will discussion about the various types ofmaterials, finishes, colors, counters, tiles andpatterns and the many ways that they getincorporated into the project.During the design period, the designer may bring ina NARI Certified Kitchen and Bath Remodeler (CKBR)to provide input for the project. This professional candiscuss construction methods of the dwelling basedupon the time it was built. Are there any structuralwalls that need to be identified, was the houseballoon framed, has it been renovated previouslyand many other building questions are all things thatthis person can identify. The remodeler can identifyany areas of concern during this time period. Ifthe structure was built prior to 1978, the federalgovernment requires that a lead test must beperformed. This program is titled the Renovate RightProgram (RRP). Even if the dwelling was previouslyrenovated after 1978, unless the homeowner hasthe documentation of the results of this test in thearea to be renovated, it still must be performed. Thepenalties for non-compliance can be staggering. The extra high backsplash and lower roof line onone side of the new kitchen meant creating a custom size upper cabinet that maximizes storage forthe limited wall space. To maintain the drawerover-door look in the lower cabinets on the samewall, a faux drawer front was integrated into a cabinet door in the corner. This gives the illusion of adrawer over a cabinet door, but actually houses afull floor-to-counter height cabinet. In inspiration photos the client shared with her Riverhead Building Supply designer, there was a simple‘X’ detail that the client liked. The Riverhead Building Supply Design Showroom was able to customize end panels for the island to add that detail, aswell as adding square furniture style legs. The islandprovides extra seating in the kitchen and has amplestorage underneath as well.On the second floor, up a steep staircase with a sharpturn, is the new master bath. Custom cabinetry wasshipped as 3 separate base units for the sink/vanity.The seamless cabinet face was designed in one pieceand required forethought and collaboration betweendesigner, manufacturer, and installer. At nearly 8’ inlength, the designer knew the cabinet front could notbe brought up the stairs. With advance planning andcoordination with both builder and installer, the single piece was brought in through the windows of themaster bath. For any cabinetry throughout thehome, the Riverhead BuildingSupply Design Showroom teamcan create customized and affordable solutions that maximizestyle, use of space, and functionality.
