SupportingResearchAll research activities in the main rely on some formof information technology solutions and services.IT now pervades research across all the major researchthemes: Agri-Food; Culture; Economy & Society;Health; ICT; Energy and Environment. The majorityof this research is done through interdisciplinaryteams working with colleagues across institutionsglobally and relying on advanced networking andother core technologies to pursue discovery.Research teams generate vast amountsof new data from the internet ofthings, social media, digital contentand other technology platforms everysecond of the day. This is commonlyknown as “big data” and requiresinformation technology solutionsand services that integrate activitieswithin UCD as well as national andglobal domains and partners.GoalsOur challenge is to identify theinfrastructure, services, and supportstructures that can provide the mostvalue in the areas of greatest needfor the UCD research community. Enhancing the UCD HighPerformance Computing service. The following goals contribute andsupport the objectives of the UCDStrategy for Research, Innovationand Impact (2015-2020).14 E nabling easy access by researchersin all disciplines to infrastructure, tools, services and support. I n partnership with keystakeholders, designing andimplementing a Research DataManagement policy and plan. In partnership with key stakeholders, implementing a new researchinformation management system.University College Dublin

Enhancing EducationalTechnology ServicesEducational technologies can help to enhanceteaching and learning across UCD and leverageUCD’s core strengths as a research and educationalinstitution. Harnessing technology to collaborateand create digital content can provide a bridgebetween teaching and research, thus enabling thedissemination of research both in the classroomand across the community. The impact of technology andglobalisation on higher education issignificant. Faculty and students areusing more and more IT every day, whether we are talking about technologyaided interaction in the classroom, videocapture for later consumption, or onlineassessment/simulations to augmenthands on activities. Technology providesthe infrastructure to allow new ways ofreaching students – in some cases farbeyond the campus classroom, such as in“massive open online classes” (MOOCs).These applications of technology ineducation must be explored so thatour faculty have the knowledge andcapability to take full advantage of themost appropriate technologies. The following goals serve to support theUniversity’s objectives and initiativesin providing an educational experiencethat defines international best practice. These goals will provide easier access tolearning technologies, establish a corebaseline of educational technologies, support innovation and most importantlyempower faculty, staff and students.Goals F acilitating the exploration, development, and adoption of newteaching tools and technologies.Focusing on supporting Colleges,Schools and educational technologiststhrough this process. Establishing a Learning Hub platformthat incorporates a virtual learningtechnology environment with forwardlooking learning systems and tools tosupport educational excellence acrossthe UCD community. S upporting faculty in the developmentof academic content and use oflearning technologies throughtraining, consultancy and guidance.Additionally, offering opportunitiesto showcase achievements in TEL(technology enhanced learning)through local and national eventsand conferences. P roviding new teaching, learningand advising tools that support thedelivery of a personalised learningexperience to students who are highlymobile learners. Designing and implementing a set oftechnology solutions that will supportformative and summative assessmentmethods in UCD.IT Strategy 202015

Contributing to theStudent ExperienceProviding information technology solutions and servicesthat meet student needs is a key goal for IT Services inUCD. Their needs are diverse and students are generallyearly adopters of new technologies, which challengesthe IT landscape in UCD. They are constantly “on”smartphones and social media software that allowsthem to be in continuous contact with friends andfamily regardless of their location. The IT Strategy2020 acknowledges this lifestyle, and also supportsstudents’ effective use of UCD information technologysolutions and services in the pursuit of their educationalambitions. Ensuring positive outcomes from this useof technology solutions and services requires regularinteraction with the UCD student community throughouttheir relationship with UCD, from prospective to alumni.IT Services will set out to enhance theprovision of information solutions andservices that support the student journeythrough UCD.
