All about meHelp me to learn new skillsThe first few years of my life are very important as my brainand body are growing very fast. This is a time that I need to feel safe and loved.Baby Moves! You can help me grow up to be healthy and strong byspending time with me – smiling, cuddling, copying mysounds, singing, reading, listening, playing games, andjust being there for me whether I am happy or sad. Most healthy children learn things in the same order, but not at the same pace or time. One baby may walk at 10 months andanother baby at 14 months. Both are developing within the normal range. As I grow, read the section that matches my age. This will give you information about how you can help me tolearn new skills, and when to get help if you notice somethingis not quite right.Write notes or questions for the nurse at the back of eachsection if you want. From the moment I am bornI need to be moved.20

At first you cansupport my head withyour fingers and rollme onto your arm.As my neck gets strongerlet me practise holding my head up.Picking me up this wayhelps strengthen themuscles I use when I feed, talk, breathe, play andmove. It also gets me usedto turning and rolling andhelps me feel secure.Once you pick me up alsosupport me under my bottomKeep my head in shapeLay me on my side to playand let me talk with youPick me up by rollingme to the sideTurn my head to adifferent side eachtime I go to sleep toprevent me gettinga flat head. This lets me curl up,play with my hands, keeps my head inshape and helps melearn to roll whenI am older.

2Being curled up withmy head centred inthe middle helps tocalm, settle me, and itlets me look, talk andplay with you.Cuddle me, carry me curled upwith my arms and legs in frontMy growthBased on CAH-011383 Department of Health 2018When I am awake give meLOTS OF TUMMY TIMEOn you or on the floor.Put my hands in front of my shoulders andplace your hand on my bottom. This will helpme lean on my arms, lift my head and talkwith you. Holding me and talking with me letsme know you are there to help me.Tummy time gets easier the more I practise.25

My growthHow babies growMy growthMy growthBabies grow and learn new skills at different rates, and notwo babies are the same. This is normal.DateI will usually grow the fastest in the first 2 to 3 months, andthen a bit more slowly as I get older and become a toddler.CommentsYou will know I am getting bigger when I outgrow my clothes.DateChild health nurses and doctors will often write down myweight, length and head circumference on charts. Regularmeasurements and health checks are important to keep aneye on how I am growing.CommentsThe lines on the growth charts are called percentiles.DateIf I am on the 3rd percentile for weight and length, this means that 97 out of every 100 (97%) babiesmy age are taller and heavier than me.CommentsIf I am on the 97th percentile for weight and length, this means that 97 out of every 100 (97%) babiesmy age are shorter and lighter than me.DateIn both of these cases, I would be within normal ranges.CommentsAsk my child health nurse or doctor if you want to know moreabout how I am growing and learning new thHeadComments2627

2 - 3 yearsYour notes62I am going to school63

SchoolI am going to schoolSchool26Going to school for the first time can be a big event.Help me to get ready: Talk to me about my feelings – excited, shy, scared, upset about being away from you. Tell me about school – making new friends, sharing andtaking turns, singing songs, playing outside. Read lots of books with me and ask me questions aboutthe stories. Practise cutting, drawing and painting – help me holdthe scissors or pencils correctly if I ask. Practise getting dressed – clothes I can manage on myown are best for school. Practise flushing the toilet and washing my hands.Make sure I have easy ‘pull down and pull up’ clothes. On the day: Make sure I have had enough sleep so thatI am ready to learn. Give me a healthy breakfast before school.Healthy food, snacks and water to drink will helpme concentrate at school. When we get to school, stay with me for alittle while until I feel safe. When it is time for you to go, tell me you are leaving, and when you will be back to get me.64287265

SchoolMy School Entry HealthAssessmentSchoolYour notesAll children starting school are offered health assessments inkindy or pre-primary if required. You will need to fill in and return a form – if you are worriedabout me, you can write that on the form as well. The nurse will use this information to see which, if any, assessments are needed, such as vision, hearing and how Iam learning new skills. My ImmunisationsDon’t forget my immunisations when I am: 4 years old in Year 8.Did you know that if there is someone with measles at myschool, children who have not been immunised might have tostay at home until the outbreak is over?Parenting supportThere are a number of different programs and support to helpwith parenting.
