Our history is one of invention. A pioneering spirit of ingenuity has definedKohler Co. from its earliest days when John Michael Kohler launched a globalplumbing company with a horse trough turned bathtub. A RICHHISTORY18731911Kohler Co. is founded in Sheboygan, Wisconsin,on December 3. The company, initially namedKohler & Silberzahn, makes plows and otherfarm implements.Kohler Co. introduces the industry's first onepiece, built-in bath with an integral apron.1883The Company adopts its current name, KohlerCo. Riverside is incorporated as Kohler Village.The American Club opens its doors tohouse single male employees in comfortablesurroundings at an affordable cost.1899John Michael purchases 21 acres of farmlandin Riverside, four miles west of Sheboygan, tobuild a new foundry and moves the companyto this location.1900Robert J. Kohler is elected company Presidentafter his father John Michael Kohler’s deathin 1900.1901The new foundry is destroyed by fire. Operationsreturn temporarily to Sheboygan while theRiverside foundry is rebuilt. At this time,the company is reorganized and renamedJ.M.
