Even so, something differenthappened while we stood in a church in front of our community that day. That day,the covenant was sealed, and something in my heart knew the difference.Since then, our new marriage has been sweet and beautiful. But I can honestlysay that our love does not compare to the love I have found in Christ. ThroughChrist’s death on the cross, God has given me a love found nowhere else. He hasgiven me peace that fills me from the inside out. He has given my life meaning byallowing me to play a part in the most important story ever told—His story.Because of the love I have found in Christ, “my cup overflows” (Psalm 23:5). Iam in awe of the fact that He entered into a covenant of love with me and keepsit forever.Tori FunkhouserTruStory Team 2013 David C Cook2

SoAbram left, not knowing where God would take him. But God’s call came with thepromise to bless Abram immensely—to make him a great nation and to bless allof the people of the earth through him (Genesis 12:2–3).Abram waited 25 long years for God to fulfill His promise. Still, Abram—whosename God would later change to Abraham—chose to believe that God wouldkeep His promises, even when the promises seemed impossible. The Bible says“against all hope, Abraham in hope believed” (Romans 4:18). Paul goes on to saythat Abram “did not waver through unbelief regarding the promise of God, but wasstrengthened in his faith and gave glory to God, being fully persuaded that Godhad power to do what he had promised” (Romans 4:20–21).Abram believed God would keep His covenant; we have his testimony and thetestimonies of many others. God keeps His promises.Environmentof STORYTELLINGThe power of The Big God Storyimpacts our lives by giving usan accurate and awe-inspiringperspective into how God hasbeen moving throughout history. It further compels us to see howGod is using every person’s lifeand is creating a unique storythat deserves to be told forGod’s glory. The 10 Environments guide usin creating a climate that putsGod on display. Today we’ll look at a part of The Big GodStory that shows us how God used the stars to describe a covenant He made withsomeone. What’s a covenant? (Allow answers.) A covenant is an extra special promise, and God always keeps His promises. (Write “Covenant” on one of the stars and tape itto the black butcher paper.) God made covenants with people throughout The Big GodStory, and He worked through these covenants to bring Jesus to the world!7

In this chapter of the Bible wesee that God spoke to a man named Abram. (Read Genesis 12:1–3 to the children.Write “Abram” on a star and tape it to the butcher paper.) Abram took his wife, hisnephew, and all of his servants and traveled to the land of Canaan, where God hadtold him to go. When Abram got there, God told him that this was the land He wasgoing to give to his descendants. Does anyone know what a descendant is? (Allowanswers. Write “Descendant” on a star and tape it to the butcher paper.) A descendant issomeone’s children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and so on. God promisedthat Abram would have lots of descendants who would fill up the land of Canaan! When Abram heard this, he built an altar to God as a way of offering thanks. (Havethe children pass their stones to the front while the kids in the front pile them up as highas possible.)(Have the kids turn to Genesis 15 in their Bibles.) A while later, God appeared toAbram again, and Abram had a question. What do you think Abram’s question was?(Allow answers.) Good thoughts. You see, Abram and his wife, Sarai, didn’t have anychildren. (Write “Sarai” on a star and tape it to the butcher paper.) God had promisedAbram descendants, but Abram didn’t know how this could happen! (Lowerthe lights.)God took Abram outside. He told Abram that he and his wife would have a son,and through this son, Abram would have many descendants. (Hold up a star.) AndGod promised that He would always keep His covenant and bless the whole worldthrough Abram.God showed Abram all the stars in the sky. (Ask a volunteer to read Genesis 15:5.)Have you ever seen the sky on a really clear night? (Allow answers.) There are somany stars! God compared Abram’s descendants to the stars—God would keepHis covenant with Abram and give him lots and lots and lots of descendants! (Write“God” on a star and tape it to the butcher paper.)Abram believed God, and because of that God gave him salvation (Genesis 15:6).And through Abram’s descendants, God promised to offer salvation to them and tothe whole world! (Write “Salvation” on a star and tape it to the butcher paper.) Then Godpointed out the land of Canaan and told Abram that He would give all the land tohis descendants.God kept His covenant with Abram, and all of God’s promises came true! Abramand his wife had a son named Isaac. (Write “Isaac” on a star and tape it to the butcherpaper.) And a few generations later, Abram’s descendants came back to the landof Canaan, and it became the country of Israel. Then, much later, the greatestdescendant of Abram’s was born. (Genesis 12:1–3) What did Abram do when God told him to go? (Genesis 12:4) Why do you think Abram was able to trust God? What is a covenant?God Is a Covenant KeeperIn today’s portion of The Big God Story we saw God choose a man named Abram.God promised to give Abram many descendants (children, grandchildren, etc.), aland to call his own, and that through him God would bless the entire world. What is the biggest blessing the world has ever received?Read Acts 3:24–25 aloud. In this part of The Big God Story, a disciple named Peterwas preaching about Jesus. He was talking to the Jews—the descendants of Abram. What do these verses say about God’s covenant promises? How is this verse similar to the verses we heard today?Invite the children to turn to Hebrews 11, and read verses 8–12 aloud to them. What do these verses tell you about what God did? Why is it good to know that God kept His covenant with Abram? 2013 David C Cook9

How does that make you feel? What does this mean for your life? How do you want to respond toGod right now?As you lead the kids throughthis time of reflection, pause andask God to give you the strengthand faith to be flexible as you givethe children the space to respondin the way that God leads.N OT E S : 2013 David C CookRemember VerseEach week children will spend time memorizing a portion of Scripture together.
