His legsurgery was a success &he’s now undergoingphysical therapy. Thankyou to all who helpedwith his support!FROM THE DOG HOUSELooziana Basset Rescue is going green. Now, instead of receiving your newsletter by mail, you can request an emailed version. In this way, we are doing ourpart to help the environment and lessen our carbon footprint. In our continued effort to rehome abandoned and neglected animals, we alsofeel that we are doing our best to recycle other people’s perfectly good throwaways.in this case, their throwaway animals. What is one person’s trash is someone else’s treasure. Our bassets, beagles, and other animals are wonderful treasures who, through no fault of their own, are dumped out like yesterday’s garbage.Adoption of our animals is the same as the recycling of a renewable resource. The only way that we can continue in our recycling efforts, though, is by havingenough money to continue our program, as well as enough foster homes to housethese wonderful dogs while they are awaiting their forever homes. The Fifth Annual Bayou Basset Boogie is our biggest and best fundraiser of theyear. Please come to Audubon Park, Shelter #10 on Sunday, April 20, 2008 from10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. All dog breeds are welcome. Please support us in our recycling efforts.Leslie WallacePresident and FounderLooziana Basset RescueFRONT DOOR DOGSLBR currently has 9 dogs boarding at Metairie SmallAnimal Hospital while they go through heartwormtreatment. The staged series of shots the dogs receiverequire that they be kept crated and calm for twomonths to reduce the chance of serious side effects(including possible death) from the treatment.Several of these dogs already have homes waiting forthem when they complete treatment. We are desperately seeking volunteers who will agree to foster one ofthese dogs until it can be released to its new family. All of these dogs are extremely easy to care for sincethey cannot be given exercise or let loose in the houseor yard. We find that putting them in a crate by thefront door, providing them with food and water, andwalking them slowly on a leash several times a day forpotty breaks works best for the dog and is minimaleffort for the foster family. If you can help, please call Leslie at 884-7488.WE’RE GOING GREEN!Please help LBR become moreenvironmentally friendly by letting us send you our periodicnewsletters and updates throughemail. By switching to email, you’ll help us save not only treesbut also printing and postagecosts, which can then be applieddirectly to our animal care expenses. To make this change, pleasesend your name and email addressfor all future correspondence to:bayoubassets@bellsouth.net .

VOLUME 7, ISSUE 1Page 3WORKING WITH RESCUE DOGSAfter losing Abby, my basset of 14 years, I found there was a big void in my life. It was toosoon to have another dog or to foster one, so I decided to volunteer with Looziana Basset Rescue. Each day I walk the LBR dogs boarding at Metairie Small Animal Hospital or just spend timevisiting with them. No two dogs are the same and each has its own personality. It is great therapy for me and it helps Leslie Wallace, along with the staff at MSAH.These animals enjoy their daily walks since they like to sniff at all the interesting scents, watchthe children play in the school yard or even chase lizards in gardens. They crave my attention aswell as the love that I give to them. Most of them are pretty content just being outside or rollingover on their backs in the cool clover for a good scratch. It is truly rewarding when Leslie finds loving homes for these dogs, knowing that they are beinggiven a second chance at life. Volunteering even a few minutes a day or a week makes a big difference with these dogs.Contributed by LBR volunteer, Robert FullmerLBR is in constant need of additional volunteers. Not only do the dogs enjoy the exercise and thecompanionship that the volunteer walkers provide, but LBR gets the added benefit of learningmore about each dog’s personality and physical needs & limitations which are so important toknow when screening potential adopters. If you have any spare time in your week, please consider volunteering to help with the hounds. In addition to walkers, we need help with our website, clerical work, newsletters, mailing lists, etc. Call Leslie at 884-7488 if you can help.Running a rescue well takes a great deal of time and is an expensive proposition. Our work could not be done without the caring financial support of our coregroup of BAYOU BASSET BACKERS. Membership fees in this program help coverthe expenses of providing medical care and housing for our rescues until permanent homes can be found. By choosing one of the levels of support on theBacker form, you are ensuring that funds will be available to save even more ofthose bayou bassets!FALL 2007 BAYOU BASSET BACKERS:BE A BAYOU BASSET BACKERNAME:ADDRESS/PHONE:Benefactor:: Mike and Vickie Jeansonne, Jerry Martin, Robert and NormaMcGlothlin, Lance and Paula Panepinto, Lorelle ReeseSwamp King: Lorraine Bowes, John and Heather Chapman, Susan Goodwin,Sherrie Hoot, Mary and William Kohlmann, Rose Martinez, Virginia Richard, AnneBENEFACTOR ( 100 )Skidmore, Jim and Sue Wheeler(T-shirt size: )Bayou Queen: Kay McArdle, Barbara and Mike RocheleauSWAMP KING ( 100)Princely Pelican: Ray and Gerry Dugas, Kelly Dussel, Edmond Larose, Jr., JeanSimmons, Sheryl Title(T-shirt size: )Big, huge LBR thanks to all of you for your support!!!BAYOU QUEEN ( 50)Looziana Basset Rescue is registered with the IRS as a 501c(3) nonprofit. I’m Blakely Rippner. I am 11 years old. I have been raising money forLooziana Basset Rescue for the past several years. I have always loved dogs, and I have two of my own. My friend Riley and I did a bake sale last monthto raise money for the Basset Hounds. We baked over 10 dozen cookies and10 dozen cupcakes and sold them during the Little Rascal’s parade in Metairie. Although we did not sell out, we had a wonderful turn out and raised 77. We took all the extra food we had made to the homeless people livingunder the interstate. They were very happy to receive it.Recently, we held a lemonade stand during the St. Patrick’s Day parade onMetairie Road and we raised 18. Other ways that I have continued to raisemoney for the Basset Hounds is to do extra chores around the house. I getpaid, above my allowance, for doing things that I am not already asked to do. Blakey with her sign for the lemonade standLooziana Basset Rescue is very important to me, and I will continue trying to she set up on St. Patrick’s Day.help out however I can.Blakely, friends, andcustomers at thebake sale during theLittle Rascal’sparade in Metairie.
