Hello Members and SupportersI am delighted to be sharing my first Chair’s message withyou in our very special 130th year of service to community.Over the past year we have continued our primary workin rescuing, rehabilitating and rehoming animals in ourcommunity. We could not do this without the extraordinarydedication of our staff and volunteers. Their passion andcommitment to the animals and to our Hamilton/BurlingtonSPCA is truly remarkable.Under the terrific leadership of our CEO Marion Emo, we haveadvanced the conversation in our community to collaborativelyprovide animals with a safe environment. We have savedanimals’ lives and enabled them to find new forever homeswhere they experience boundless love and caring. As ourpopulation ages we will strive to find ways to support people’sability to keep the animals they love in their lives and not haveto make those difficult decisions when life changes - when theycan no longer walk their dog, or seek care for a cat’s treatableillness, and for others, choose between leaving an abusiverelationship or leaving a beloved pet at risk of harm. This starts with our staff and volunteers, our foster familiesand adoption parents, and our students. None of this happenswithout you - our members, donors, and supporters and, thosewho grace the HBSPCA with legacy gifts in their estates as theirforever commitment to the animals. The HBSPCA is well served by a dedicated board of directors. Iam proud to volunteer with this very committed group to helpguide our organization and steward the very precious resourceswe are afforded by our donors and community partners.Juanita Gledhill, Chair, HBSPCA, and BentleyIn this our 130th year our gift to the HBSPCA is to refresh ourVision, Mission and Strategic Plan and to launch a capitalcampaign to improve the living conditions of the animals weserve. We will be renovating our building to ensure the animalsin our care, and those who care for the animals, are in a spacethat is in alignment with best practice standards for animalshelters. We hope you will join us and support us with yourtime, talent, and treasure as we move toward these goals.Animals enrich our lives and our community. The HBSPCA isprivileged to serve them and you as we strive to ensure everyanimal is healthy, safe and wanted. Happy birthday HBSPCA please come celebrate with us!With warm regards,Juanita G. 23242728293031S41118255CINDY SUFFOLETTA2017 RECIPIENT OF THE HBSPCA DR. JEAN RUMNEY AWARDAs far back as I can remember I have always loved animals, forever bringing home anything that needed a home, much tomy mother’s protests. As I considered a career, I initially started in the animal fieldstudying to be an animal health technician but changed my pathand began working with at risk youth.12As my own family got older and I had more time to devote tovolunteering, I recognized that cats in Hamilton were another atrisk population and I started volunteering with a local cat rescue.19I soon realized it didn’t matter how many cats got adopted, there were always more to save. So a friend and I got togetherand thought, in order to continue to help cats and reducethe numbers born each year, we must go to the source of theproblem. We hit the streets and formed Hamilton Street Cats.26Hamilton Street Cats’ goal is to reduce the number of cats livingon the streets in Hamilton through Trap/Neuter/Return/Monitor(TNR-M) – an approach to spay/neuter and rabies vaccinate asmany cats as possible and return them to their territory. Thisprevents more cats being born and gradually, the populationdeclines. We know too that education is key; we speak with thepublic about best practices and resources available to caretakersof street cats to help the cats they care for and keep bothcaretakers and cats safe. Not only does Hamilton Street Cats promote TNR/M, we alsoraise money and help caretakers cover the costs of spay andneuter surgeries. Cat lovers want to do the right thing! This pastyear, Hamilton Street Cats is proud to have joined HamiltonCommunity Cat Network, a collaborative to expand our impacton cat population issues.I am humbled to be a recipient of the Jean Rumney Award. I and mycolleagues are just a few among many who want to help in so manyways, big and small, to ensure all cats are healthy, safe and wanted.

irst day ofHanukkah17181920Last day 1New Year’sEve27EVERYWHERE A CAT“The hardest to find homes for are cats” (HamiltonNews, August 11, 1950). True for decades. But changeis afoot. Spay/neuter is becoming common, accessibleand affordable. And, across Canada, adopting a pet isbecoming the standard, shelter intake is down, and returnto owner rates are increasing.Paws up to PetSmart Charities of Canada for making adifference in Hamilton. By the end of 2017, PetSmartCharities will have subsidized 1900 cat spay/neuters atthe HBSPCA for family owned cats, supporting pet parentswho do the right things for their furry feline friends. E

tine’sDay ING BACK: AASTHAI have been volunteering with the HBSPCA for almost twoyears. I started as a Leader in Training at Summer CritterCamp where I interacted with kids and explored all theways that animals positively affect our lives. And now, early every Saturday morning, I pick up cats andkittens at the Hamilton/Burlington SPCA and bring them toPetSmart in Ancaster for adoption. I set up their temporaryhome, prep their adoption files and meet with potentialadopters to see if we can make a forever match. My love of animals started early in my life. I have alwayswanted to help animals, learn more about them, and helppeople have good relationships with them.I’m in grade 12 and will be attending the University ofGuelph in the fall to study Animal Biology. I hope to attendVeterinary school. There is a role for everyone at the HBSPCA andvolunteering has been a great way for me to learn, andgive back to the community and to the animals.

2018SM411T512W613MART714FSWHERE IS KITTY’S HOME?This is an all too frequent question in neighbourhoods, among rescue groups, at Hamilton Animal Services, and theHBSPCA. There could be as many 35,000 homeless cats inour community.1238910Too many cats find themselves abandoned by theirowners or lost, and fending for themselves on the streets,in back yards, in industrial parks. Some are cared forby neighbourhood caregivers who take responsibility tosafely feed street cats or community cats and ensure somemeasure of shelter from the elements.17Cat parenting is variable and ownership is fluid. Ownedcats might be indoor cats only, have limited outdoor access,or be mostly outdoor. Some cats get lost, become stray andproduce more cats – now living on the street. And some catsare feral, having little or no familiar contact with people.1516DaylightSavingsTime startsSt Patrick’sDay1819202122232425262728293031There is a solution for street cats.Make a difference and keep our cats healthy, safe and wanted.Take responsibility.Fix your cat.Micro chip your cat.Help all cats get fixed.Find out how at www.hbspca.comSheltering has Struggled with CatsSHELTERING HAS STRUGGLED WITH CATSGood First DayFriday of PassoverCat “Ownership” Un-ownedStrayFeralCommunity Cats, Fluid “Ownership”Adoptability/Perceived ValueCourtesy of the British Columbia SPCA

3Father’sDay24252627282930A HOME FOR ALLSick, injured, unwanted it doesn’t matter. There is a home for allat our shelter and beyond.Marshall: Age is just a numberMarshall first made an appearance at the HBSPCA in 2010 from ashelter in Belleville that was out of space. He found a forever homequickly and settled in. It was heartbreaking to find Marshall as astray in 2017. Marshall had a significant growth on his side thatturned out to be cancerous, and needed to be removed. Finding ahome for a senior dog with a likelihood of returning tumors mightbe difficult, but it was only a short visit for Marshall before a familyfell in love with him and wanted to give him a loving home for hisgolden years.Tripod BeansBeans had it rough from the start! Birthing complications causedBeans to come into this world with a deformed leg and tail. He wassurrendered to the shelter as a newborn and was hand-raised withlove. You wouldn’t know that he only has three legs, as he can keepup with two dogs and a cat in his new family!Chelsea beats the oddsA hand-raised miracle puppy, Chelsea fought the odds. She andher 4-day old siblings arrived at the shelter after their mom passedaway from birth complications. The pups were hand fed, butChelsea was struggling. At just 8 days old, her lungs were failingher. Thanks to a network of supporters, and mobile oxygen tanks,Chelsea pulled through and is now living the good life in herforever home.One-eyed OdinOdin arrived at just three weeks of age with a badly damaged eye.The eye was quickly assessed, and the damage was too severe torepair it. The eye was removed and Odin recovered in foster care, where his foster family decided he would stay forever.
