LETTER FROM MIRIAM HALIMIOur Brandeis University student liaison Miriam Halimi is now a senior and has written of her experiencewith the neuroscience departments at Brandeis University labs and classes:“This coming fall will begin my final year at Brandeis University. The past three years haveexposed me to some of the most phenomenal, groundbreaking achievements in neuroscience. My experiences at the labs and in classes here on campus have inspired me to the point of trulyknowing what I am destined to do for the rest of my life.Having spent my undergraduate career taking various science courses as a biology major on thepre-medical track, I now feel prepared to conquer my most challenging endeavor yet—the MCAT.One course in particular has proven to be especially significant to my studies here: Neurobiologyof the Human Disease, taught by Professor Gregory Petsko.Through his generous words of wisdom and genuine devotion to his field of study, he hasinspired me to dedicate my future to the study of the brain; more specifically, neuroendocrinology: the interaction between hormones and different parts of the brain. After taking his class, I began volunteering at a local hospice with patients suffering from variousneurodegenerative diseases, among other ailments. As an undergraduate, I am fortunate enough to feel I have already discovered my passion andaspire to become a physician with a specialty of geriatric neuroendocrinology. I plan to spend myfinal year at Brandeis as a teaching assistant for Organic Chemistry and hopefully attain aresearch position at Professor Petsko’s lab.I am so grateful for the support that has allowed me to attend Brandeis and as the new studentrepresentative for the BNC National Board, I know how important it is to continue to gain supportfor all of the university’s greatest accomplishments. This support will prove to be invaluable formyself as well as the many other student and professional scientists at Brandeis as we goforward with our contributions to the scientific advancements of the future.”June 2012 board meeting: Carole Weinberg and Miriam HalimiBrandeis National Committee – Gotham ChapterSummer 2012 – January 2013Page 9
