The purposeof Columbine Cougars in the Community is to shareyoung people’s knowledge and experiences of wherethey live and to share these ideas with people thatmake decisions about their community.We think this book should be shared with neighbors,new people in the neighborhood, friends, MayorHickenlooper, teachers, and family members.Columbine Cougars in the Community gives ideasabout where to play in the neighborhood, where we getfood, and how we spend our time. The book also showswhere there are bad places in the neighborhood andour ideas about making the community a better placeto live.The neighborhoods where most of us live arecalled Skyland, Clayton, Whittier and Cole. Theseneighborhoods are located in northeast Dever, CO.Most of the people who live here are African Americanor Hispanic. Ab o u t our s c h o olSobre nuestra escuelaWe have a new Learning Landscapesplayground that we all helped to design.This playground has a hill we call Struggle Hill that symbolizes the struggle byAfrican Americans for civil rights. Thereare also two memorials for teachers whosadly passed away. Their names are CarolBerger and Jill Connet. We also have a petthat passed away; his name is Cheeks.Our playground gives us places to playand shade where we can relax.Nosotros tenemos un patio de recreonuevo hecho por Learning Landscapesque ayudamos a diseñar. On average, girls takemore steps than boys (girls take 11,841steps and boys take 8,392 steps). The color of mygrandmother’s house is dark red. Mostlyall my cousins like to hang out there.Mostly every time we have a party wehave it at my grandmother’s house. Shehas seven bedrooms. We like to play inthe big backyard. We like to talk. That’smy favorite place to hang out.A me mi gusta la casa de mi abuela. Estan grande y tiene un piso de arriba.Siempre me gusta pasar la noche allí.El color de la casa de mi abuela es rojooscuro. Casi todos mis primos le gustanestar allí. My favorite hangout spot is on 29thand High. That is the Denver PublicLibrary. The Denver Public Library isa place to check out as many booksor movies as you want, as long as youreturn your other check-outs. It givesme a place to study when I need it.Here is a place to go when you havespare time. What do I do at the library?I do tons of things at the library, forexample I look up websites. You canread or listen to stories. Also you cansee puppet shows, even arts and crafts.The library is a nice, cool place to go inthe summer. These are some activities Ido at the Denver Public Library.Mi sitio favorito para pasar el tiempoestá en la Calle 29 y Calle High. Estaes la Biblioteca Pública de Denver. If Ido not do these sports I roll in the grassor I run in the sprinklers when they turnthem on. I really like when I pick thegrass and I make mud pies or a cake atFuller Park. The gorillapushed Tarzan in the water. What a place!Casa Bonita has fried food! Myfavorite food there is the enchilada.The enchilada is a Mexican dish withtomatoes and tortillas and also cheese.My favorite appetizer is the soppapilla.The soppapilla is a Mexican dessert; it isthe fried bread you eat with honey. Country Buffet is a restaurantwith all different kinds of food. It is animportant place for me to hang out atbecause you can get the food that youwant and there is no shooting or crashes.The things I like are the kind of foodthey have. They serve hot wings, pastaand chicken pasta. I like it because I canget anything I want like chocolate chips,Oreos, and all other kinds. I also like itbecause they give you like work sheets.This is a place where I eat and hang out.Uno de los sitios voy a comer es CountryBuffet. My favorite restaurant is the Torresrestaurant. It’s called the Torres becausethe person that owns it has the lastname Torres. I went there on Saturdayto celebrate my brother’s baseballgame that he won. I ate cheesy, hot,melty enchiladas. They are my favoritefood. It is important to me becauseit has my favorite food, dessert, anddrink.If I were tochange mycommunity.My favorite dessert is a big, vanilla cupof ice cream with a juicy cherry on thetop. I like to hang out there a long timewith them. If we go we go at 12:45.Then we leave at 2:00 pm. When we getout of there we come out very full.I like to go there all the time. It is veryfar from my house. It is my favoriterestaurant to go on Saturdays. They sella lot of good food and good desserts.All my family goes there. The Torresrestaurant is the best Mexican food.Mi restaurante favorito es El Torres. Sellama “Torres” porque la persona quees el dueño se llama Torres. What I like toeat there is breakfast, lunch and dinner.For breakfast I have turkey sausage,eggs, pancakes and a beverage. Forlunch I have a grilled cheese sandwichor a cheeseburger, French fries, and abeverage too! Don’t worry! I don’t eatlike this every day.Why I like their food is because itdoesn’t have that much fat and caloriesin it, and you would never want towaste any of it. I mostly spend about30 minutes to an hour eating therebecause it takes a couple of minutesto get the food ready. I really like IHOPand I will never stop eating there.If I were to change myneighborhood I wouldbuild a grocery store nextto my house. The poorpeople could go in and getgroceries for free. I wouldalso build a gymnasiumfor everybody to play in.Also every Saturday wewould make a block party.I would build a park forevery single person in mypeaceful–with-a-little–bitof-violence neighborhood.And I would ask people toplease stop the violence.Si yo pudiera cambiar mivecindario yo construiréun mercado de comidas allado de mi casa. BadP l a ce sLos sitios malosBad places are at liquor stores. It smellsbad inside. It is bad because somebodycan get drunk and come out. It is alsobad because some people can try toget you to drink beer and smoke. AlsoManual High School is a bad place. It isbad because gangs hang out there, alsobecause gangs fight there. The last placethat is bad is Columbine Street. It is badbecause there are drive-bys. That’s whythose are bad places.A good place is at the police station. It isa good place because police can see whatis going on around you. It is also a goodplace because police are by you. Anothergood place is a public school. It is a goodplace because teachers and studentsare aware about what happens to you.Also because you can run to the school ifsomething might happen to you. Thoseare places that are good and why.Los sitios malos son las tiendas de licores.Tiene mal olor por dentro. Es mal porquealguien puede estar borracho y sale. All of the trash is all over the ground. Ibet you that the trash you can smell isall the garbage of your house. It is awful that some people have to sleep bythem. They also have to eat from them.It is nasty. That is what the poor peopledo if they do not have a house, food,or family to help them. I also think thealleys are not a safe place to pass by.I say when you throw trash to be bysomeone so they can help you if youget in danger.Toda la basura está en la tierra.
