PART ISTUDY NUMBER ONE - Hebrews 1:1-14INTRODUCTION:Christian growth is best describedby Chuck Swindollin his book, Three Steps Forward, Two Steps Back:Growing and learning. That's the Christian life in a nutshell, isn't it?It seems to me, that more of us in God's familyought to admit that there are more"growing and learning" days than"great and fantastic" days. And that's nothing to be ashamed of.Growing and learning are healthy, normal experiences. Both have to do with a process . . .and that process is sometimes painful, often slow, and occasionally downright awful! It's like taking three steps forwardand two steps back.1Copyright 2017 by Bible Teaching Resources by Don Anderson Ministries. Or a rose garden.Or a Cloud Nine delight complete withloud fireworks and big-time tingles.Or daily miracles that make ourcheckbooks balanceand recharge our dead batteries.Such expectations are not only unrealistic, they are unbiblical.Listen to the apostle Paul:We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed;perplexed, but not despairing;persecuted, but not forsaken;struck down, but not destroyed (2 Cor. 4:8,9).Now that's where it's at.And that is precisely what this bookis all about.Persevering through the afflictions, the crushings, the blasts of life . . . without despairingand giving up.pp. 17-182

And when you have a rough time, you haveseveral cards, that you can play. You can either give in, give out, give up,or you can go on.And to these believers, they literally want to give in,give out, and give up, and go back to Judaism. They are Jewish Christians who havecome out of Judaism and have accepted the Messiah. They have suffered being ostracizedfrom their families, they have suffered persecution, they have lost employment. And because they are in this kind of position, rather than persevere and press on,they want to quit.Copyright 2017 by Bible Teaching Resources by Don Anderson Ministries. When it comes to the Book of Hebrews, the glory of Jesus Christ flows throughthe whole book.It is one of the most majestic statementsof the Person of Christ.Simply because he wants to showthese Jewish Christians that they can’t findanything better than where they are. They have found the epitome. They have found the best in Christ. The Book of Hebrews is a lot likethe Book of Romans. It is one of those great theological treatisesin the New Testament of which Romans is one,and Hebrews is the other.Copyright 2017 by Bible Teaching Resources by Don Anderson Ministries. Thatshouldn’t cause us to back offfrom one of the greatest books in the New Testament.4

This explains much ofthe content and the many references to the OldTestamentand the sacrificial systemthroughout the book.2.The book is written to genuine[born again] believers so the messageis for Christians.3.The group that is hearing and receivingthe letter are contemplatingleaving Christianity, and the possibilityof going back to Judaism, away from Christ, because of the persecution and sufferingthey have experienced. They are going to bow out, throw in their hand, and go back to Judaism and forsakethe person of Christ. That is the basicthree point framework to the Book of Hebrews. When was it written? We have a little tiny window in 70 A.D.Titus came into Jerusalem, destroyed Jerusalem, destroyed the temple, so the temple worship is gone.5

So I’m suggesting a window of from 64-70 A.D.Somewhere in that timeframe, the book was writtenand it is written to a second generationChristian group.Copyright 2017 by Bible Teaching Resources by Don Anderson Ministries. Teacher notes have been compiled by Ronnie Marroquin.Temple worship is functioningin the Book of Hebrews so we have to back upfrom there and come up with a datethat is preceding 70 A.D.I believe these are people who are not at Pentecost butthey have heard the message of Christ, they have come to know Him as Savior, they have suffered persecution, and nowthey are thinking about going back under Judaism. We really don’t know who wrotethe Book of Hebrews. It is an anonymous text. There have been volumes and volumes writtenon who is the author, to the Book of Hebrews.Basically, most likely, you have two main choices. You can say Paul or Barnabas. They are probably our two greatest candidates. It doesn’t bother me.The reason it doesn’t is becauseit’s inspired by the Holy Spirit that made the book,6

When we get to heaven, we’re going to find out,who wrote the Book of Hebrewsand you’re going to get to meet him.And guess what, he’s going to say?“Have you read my book?”Yes. You’re going to say, “I sure did.Over at . It was great!”Copyright 2017 by Bible Teaching Resources by Don Anderson Ministries. DON'T EVEN THINK OF QUITTINGDon’t even consider the option of quitting.2. IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO STOP [your]GROWTH AND START OVERYou can’t make a rededicationto Christ today, and erase the tapesfrom the timeof your spiritual birthtill now.7

But you can’t.And you can’t go back.Copyright 2017 by Bible Teaching Resources by Don Anderson Ministries. WE WILL BE HELD ACCOUNTABLEAT THE JUDGMENT SEAT OF CHRISTfor our lives from the beginningof our new birth until either, termination or therapture of the church.4.LIFE ABUNDANT [always] COMES[to the person who is] COOPERATING WITHTHE CIRCUMSTANCES IN OUR LIVES, [thatare] DESIGNED BY OURHEAVENLY FATHER FOR GROWTHLife abundant always comes to the person whois cooperating with the circumstancesin his or her life designed by a Fatherwho is doing it for our growth.8

GROWTH INVOLVES DISCIPLINE,DESIRE, DETERMINATION AND DEDICATIONGrowth involves those things. You are as mature in Christ todayas you want to be.By the discipline that you’ve exercised,by the desire that you have, and thedetermination to do what Godwants you to do, and the dedicationyou have given to that, you are what you really want to be,as a result of your commitmentto Christ .Someone said it well, "The problemin the garden of Eden, was not the fruiton the tree, but the pair on the ground."The bottom line is Adam and Eve,and they created the havoc that took place. They madethe choices, and you make the choices as well. Are you ready? What the author is going to show us in thesefirst verses is two things.9

Verse 1"IN MANY WAYS AND IN MANY PORTIONS,"God communicated, first of all, in "MANY WAYS."How has God spoken in the past, “in former times”?He spoke through:That is, by:VISIONS,the LAW,the TYPES,the PROPHECIES.10Copyright 2017 by Bible Teaching Resources by Don Anderson Ministries. Whichare records of God speaking to menthrough inspired writers, your Old Testament."IN MANY WAYS AND IN MANY PORTIONS, GOD,[When?] IN FORMER TIMES HAVING SPOKEN TOTHE FATHERS BY MEANS OF THE PROPHETS,"Notice God isn’t speaking this way today. It’s in “former times.”If God is going to communicate a message to you, guesswhat. He’s going to communicate a message to you throughthe written word and by the powerof the Spirit, as you are still before God.11

Now, that’s in “former times.”Now play verse 2 against verse 1.v. 2 in the last of these days spoke to us in His Son,whom He appointed heir of all things, throughwhom also He made the worlds (ages),In other words, God sent one more message. After He got done with the prophets,He had one more message to giveand that message involved His Son,a person, not a written message. Look at it.In verse 1 the KEY PHRASE is:"in former times He spoke by meansof the prophets."Now in verse 2:"IN THE LAST OF THESE DAYS HE SPOKETO US IN HIS SON."That’s His favorite title for His Son, “His Son.”13Copyright 2017 by Bible Teaching Resources by Don Anderson Ministries. STATEMENT #1 is seen in the phrase:Copyright 2017 by Bible Teaching Resources by Don Anderson Ministries. Teacher notes have been compiled by Ronnie Marroquin."IN THE LAST OF THESE DAYS SPOKE TO USIN HIS SON, WHOM HE APPOINTEDHEIR OF ALL THINGS.""WHOM HE APPOINTED HEIR OF ALL THINGS."He is the heir of everything because Hecreated it all.Because He is the Creator, it qualifies Himto be the heir. He is the designated heirof all things, and it should be so.STATEMENT #1:HIS APPOINTMENT AS HEIR.Here’s the Good news!Romans 8:16, 17The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spiritthat we are children of God, and if children, heirsalso, heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, ifindeed we suffer with Him in order that we mayalso be glorified with Him.All that is His is ours now, too.We too become joint heirs with Him.15

STATEMENT #2:HE IS THE CREATOR.We know that Christ is the Creator. In John 1 it says, “all things were made by Him,and without Him, was not anything madethat was made.”Copyright 2017 by Bible Teaching Resources by Don Anderson Ministries. The author's teacher notes incorporate quoted, paraphrased and summarized material from a variety of sources, all of which have been appropriately credited to the best of our ability.Quotations particularly reside within the realm of fair use. It is the nature of teacher notes to contain references that may prove difficult to accuratelyattribute. Any use of material without proper citation is unintentional. Teacher notes have been compiled by Ronnie Marroquin."THROUGH WHOM ALSO HE MADE THE WORLDS(AGES)."Colossians 1 agrees with that.We believe that Christ was there in the beginning andHe was there as the Creator. He is Creator in a greater degree. He didn’t just make all the planetsand all the galaxies, but He also plannedthe whole program. The Word is “ages.”He planned all of time from its beginningto its termination. And guess what?He planned in that programHis own physical death for you and meand for our eternal salvation. He is the Master Planner.16

When he comes to this, he describesthe magnitude of Christ as the Creatoras saying these words:Copyright 2017 by Bible Teaching Resources by Don Anderson Ministries. Teacher notes have been compiled by Ronnie Marroquin. Now to get an idea of the magnitude of that,Kent Hughes wrote a two volume commentaryon the Book of Hebrews.Cambridge physicist Stephen Hawking, who has been called "the most brilliant theoreticalphysicist since Einstein," says in his best-sellingA Brief History of Time that our galaxy is anaverage-sized spiral galaxy that looks to other galaxieslike a swirl in a pastry roll and that it is over 100,000light years across--about six hundred trillion miles. He says, "We now know that our galaxy is only one ofsome hundred thousand million that can be seen usingmodern telescopes, each galaxy itself containing somehundred thousand million stars." It is commonly heldthat the average distance between these hundredthousand million galaxies (each six hundred trillionmiles across and containing one hundred thousandmillion stars) is three million light-years!On top of that, the work of Edwin Hubble, based on theDoppler effect, has shown that all red-spectrumedgalaxies are moving away from us--and that nearly allare red. Thus, the universe is constantly expanding. Some estimates say that the most distant galaxy iseight billion light-years away--and racing away at twohundred million miles an hour.p. 2717

Teacher notes have been compiled by Ronnie Marroquin.Incredible when you realize the magnitude,of what the Creator was involved in.v. 3 who being the radiance of His glory and the exactrepresentation of His nature (real being), and whois bearing up all things by the word of His power. When He had made purification of sins, He satdown at the right hand of the Majesty on high;“WHO BEING THE RADIANCE OF HIS GLORY.”What does that mean? You can do one or two things with light can’t you?You can either radiate it because it’s internalor you can reflect it.We say the moon reflects the light of the sun.Christ does not reflect the light of the Father. He is the Light.18

In John 17 in the Garden of Gethsemenewhat does He pray?“Father, return My glory now that my work hereis finished.”He literally radiates the glory. Now, what do you and I do, when wespend time in His presence? We reflect that glory, don’t we?We become more and more like Himfor we see Him as He is.Jesus Christ is a sun not the moon.He radiates the glory of God.In STATEMENT #4 we will focus on His NATURE.Copyright 2017 by Bible Teaching Resources by Don Anderson Ministries. He asked another question: “HaveI been so long a time with you Philipand you have not known Me?I and the Father are one. We are one!”"WHO BEING THE RADIANCE OF HIS GLORY ANDTHE EXACT REPRESENTATION OF HIS NATURE(REAL BEING), AND WHO IS BEARING UP ALLTHINGS BY THE WORD OF HIS POWER."We see:His GLORY [in #3],His NATURE [in #4], andand now we are going to look at:His POWER [in #5].20

STATEMENT #5:"WHO IS BEARING UP ALL THINGS BY THEWORD OF HIS POWER."Colossians 1:17And He is before all things, and in Himall things hold together. And it runs like clockwork. We send our space men into spacebecause of the rules that are involved. The seasons are here.We know what’s coming because we believein a reliable God.Copyright 2017 by Bible Teaching Resources by Don Anderson Ministries. * And would you be willing to believethat He is doing it today?* And the circumstances that surround youare for your own personal spiritual developmentand growth in Christlikeness.* You see a glaring inconsistency when you gripeand complain about what God allowsas the curriculum, in our individual livesat that point. And the Hebrew Christians need to realize that. They’re having a hard time.Do they think God turned His back on themjust because they’re getting persecuted and having ahard time? No.God is developing Christlike characterand they can’t stand the heat, so they’regetting out of the kitchen. They want to go back to a more comfortablekind of a lifestyle, which is opposed, to what Godhas in mind for them.22Copyright 2017 by Bible Teaching Resources by Don Anderson Ministries.
