Project Summary and MethodsNorthside Urban Partnership is expanding its workforce development programs to reach moreNorthside residents. Syracuse Community Geography was tasked to identify potentialmanufacturing employment sites in Central New York.A list of manufacturing sites was created using internet searches. The list of manufacturing siteswas then geocoded to create maps of manufacturing sites in Central New York, OnondagaCounty, and city of Syracuse. A northeast slant of the city of Syracuse was mapped as itcontained a majority of the manufacturing sites in that area. Reference numbers are also added toeach manufacturing site in the Syracuse map to identify the name of the manufacturer.Another map was also produced to show visual clusters of manufacturing sites and CENTRO busroutes in Syracuse and East Syracuse. The tool, Kernel Density, was then used to test thesignificance of the visual clusters, where using Kernel Density showed concentrations ofmanufacturing sites similar to the visual clusters. CENTRO bus routes were added to this map totentatively determine accessibility of manufacturing sites if potential employees do not have acar or other means to access the worksite. A list of bus routes that fell within the visual clusterswas also produced to show specific times of when potential employees can board the bus tobegin a shift that starts around 7:00 a.m. or 8:00 a.m.
