How long a fragrance lasts,that's what's propelled our brand," said Troy.Traci is responsible for crafting fragrances and package design. She'screated more than 200 scents, drawing from a library of more than 1,000ingredients like sandalwood and assorted Indian and European botanicals.Inspiration, she says, comes from everywhere."What's happening in fashion inspires me. For example, there were floralsall over the runway for spring. So I decided on a floral base for all thefragrances."And sometimes colors, too. For gray, I think maybe I could use charcoaland a gray lavender. And when I see fabric patterns, I think about whether Icould use (them) for packaging."BURNING BOTH ENDSBefore the Arntsens nabbed Saks as a client, they were able to sell theirhomemade candles (then called Flame & Wax) to local businesses, suchas a San Clemente furniture store and St. John Knits. They were on such ashoestring budget that every check they brought in went back outimmediately to make more candles.Still, Voluspa was relatively successful the first two years. The companymoved from the couple's home to a 30,000-square-foot warehouse in LakeForest. And it found marketing niches in places such as the elite FredSegal boutique in Los Angeles.But it wasn't until InStyle magazine mentioned the candles in 2001 that thecompany established some coveted brand recognition."Sarah Michelle Gellar said she loved Voluspa candles in InStyle," recalledTraci."When I saw that, I cried."HOT, TRENDYThat was just a start.Today, celeb fans of Voluspa include Halle Berry, Adam Sandler, CourtneyCox and, recently, Hayden Panetierre. At the company's Lake Forestoffices, the lobby's walls are covered with clippings from glossy magazines."We still get so excited when we hear a celebrity likes our products," saidTraci. "It never gets old."With her fresh and petite blond looks, the mother of two could probablypass for Hayden Panetierre's sister. On a recent day, Traci donned ametallic-flecked shift dress by 12th Street by Cynthia Vincent and 4-inchleopard pumps by Christian Louboutin. Troy said they get a kick wheneveryday people recognize their candles, too."Our FedEx guy even knew our candles and said his wife loved them; thatwas really nice," said Troy.The couple recently moved to Ladera Ranch with their daughters,2-year-old Anais and 1-year old Paloma. The kids come to work with them,where there's a big play area upstairs and nannies to look after them whileMom and Dad work."Being able to take our children to work is an awesome, huge benefit," saidTroy.
