The inspiring story behind the creation of Madinah Arabic Reader(Quote:)INTRODUCTIONFull-time Islamic schools are a relatively new phenomenonin the United States. However, the growth of such schoolshas been rapid and, Alhamdulillah, several hundred suchschools now exist and the number is expected to mushroomfurther in the coming years. In the United States, Islamic Schools admin students asyoung as 3 years of age (Pre-Kindergarten) and, in theensuing years, these students progress throughKindergarten, 1st Grade and all the way through 12thGrade, at which time, Insha Allah, they should be ready toenter college.Islamic schools curricula comprise secular subjects, whichare generally the same as those mandated by the County orthe State for public schools. In addition, Islamic schoolstutor religious subjects such as Arabic, Islamic Studiesand Qur’an. The standards to which students are tutoredand tested in secular subjects, on a grade-to-grade basis, are well documented so that administrators, teachers andstudents know, at the outset, what is expected in terms ofperformance from each party. Equally important, parentsare aware of such expectations. No similar standards existfor the religious component of Islamic schools’ curricula.3

The Board of Directors of the Nur-Ul-Islam Academy, afully-accredited Islamic school (Pre-K through 12th Grade)located in the Fort Lauderdale area of Florida, felt thatthe absence of well documented standards was notconductive to proper administration, teaching or learning. As a first step to compensate for this shortcoming, theBoard felt that there was an urgent need to structure andpublish a series of textbooks that would fit well into thestructure and overall curricula of the Nur-Ul-IslamAcademy, and that may serve the needs of other schools inNorth America and elsewhere. This led the Academy’s Board of Directors to inviteProfessor Abdur Rahim, Director of the TranslationCentre of King Fahd Qur’an Printing Complex and formerProfessor of Arabic at the Islamic University of Madinah,Saudi Arabia, to visit the Academy and to produce a seriesof textbooks that would enable students to read, write andspeak Arabic with some degree of proficiency by the 8thGrade.Professor Abdur Rahim was both gracious and generous inhis response and traveled without delay to the Academy’scampus to undertake the exercise. His efforts led to thiseight-volume series catering for students fromKindergarten through 8th Grade.Professor Abdur Rahim’s eight-volume texts allow thelanguage to be acquired in the classical structural form. The books attempt to teach language skills through appliedgrammar. Each lesson consists of a conversation based oncertain language patterns.4

Various types of exercises help the student to understandeach of the patterns occurring in the lesson, and to masterthem. The vocabulary represents classical and Qur’anicwords and expressions, along with words used in modernArabic. The series of books are currently being utilized at theAcademy to prepare students for the University of London(UK) GCE Ordinary Level and Advanced Level examinations, via Edexcel International. The Board of Directors, faculty, students and parents ofthe Nur-Ul-Islam Academy are very much indebted toProfessor Abdur Rahim for his generosity and devotion toour cause, and we pray that Allah rewards him inabundance.May Allah bless all who seek knowledge.Jazak Allah Khairan.Dr. Kem HussainPresident: Nur-Ul-Islam AcademyNur-Ul-Islam Academy10600 SW 59th Street,Cooper City, Florida,USA5Copyrighted.
