PREFACE TO THE SERIESare two reasons whyTHEREhave written these books:Ifirst,in response to thousands of my pupilsthroughout this country and Canadawhomoredesire the instruction in atangible form than simplythrough the medium of the voice;second, that the general public mayhave the result of thorough, honest, and unbiassed investigation extending throughout a period of thirty-fiveyears.Having kept abreast of the times,I am fully aware of the conclusionsother writers have reached, especiallyon spiritism; and am further conscious of the fact that, with few exceptions, I do not, in the main, agreewith these. However, my decisionshave in no way been influenced by anywriter, not even by my friend, thelate Dr.Thomson Jay Hudson, whomI first met in 1899. When our pathsconverged, we found we had been

I felt highlyhonored to have so great an authoritybear so corroborative testimony.By consulting the topics treated itwill be observed that I have covereda much wider field than those who;have preceded me, having touchedupon every phase of Psychic Phenomena. This I have done as brieflyand concisely as possible and practi-mycable, and whiledecisions arepositive, they are neither arrogantnor dogmatic.E. B.Los Angeles, Cal.February 1, 1910.VJW.

followingTHEforletter, which speaksfrom the late Dr.Thomson Jay Hudson, the author of"The Law of Psychic Phenomena,"itself, isetc.:No. 10 Ninth St., S. E.,Washington, D. C, May 2, 1900.I consider Mr. Edward B. Warman the peer of anyman in his line; in fact, I know of no one who coversso wide a field. His experiences in Mental Telegraphyare eqnal to any I have ever known; he is the mostpractical psychologist it has ever beenpleasure tomeet; his explanation of Hypnotism removes all fear;his sifting of the grains of truth from the ChristianScience doctrine leaves nothing to be desired; hisexegesis of Spiritism is scientific and logical, acknowledging, as every thorough investigator must, thealleged phenomena, but denying, as every logicianmust, the alleged cause. His Suggestions to Mothersare simply invaluable.I heartily commend him for his sound doctrines.my(%mtA6&fez&,

On the other hand, one maybe homely in feature, lacking symmetry of figure and form, neatly butplainly dressed, yet be attractive. What constitutes the difference? It12

:PERSONAL MAGNETISMnot what one appears to be, butwhat one actually is. It is the truecharacter of the man. " Character,"says Moody, "is what a man is in thedark." A man is what he is throughheredity, environment, and education but he does not need to remainwhat he is, if what he is is not desirable. But what he is, and not whatis;he appears tobe, isclose student ofmanifest to everyhumannature. This something that lies hidden, unseen but ever-felt power, iswhat we call "personal ndividuality. This subtle "something" has probably never been more nearly expressed than in the following excerptfrom "Maurine," by Ella WheelerWilcox"Andhepossessedthatpower, strange, occult,magnetism,word,Called13lackingbetter

Such aperson will attract you through the17

It is through the mindthat various physical abnormalitiesare externalized in the body.To possess the greatest personalmagnetism, we should cultivate thedevelopment of both brain andbrawn, together with the spiritual, and thus round out the completeman.Inour undertakings ourpersonal magnetism will be greatlyaugmented by never swerving fromthe path of right. "Let us have faiththat right makes might," said Lincoln, "and in that faith let us to theend dare to do our duty as we understand it."Mental and physical magnetism, allwell spiritualized (the soul element),is a key to the most guarded vaultsofhumannature, unlocking the most18

PERSONAL MAGNETISMstubborn hearts and opening moredoors in business and social life thanany other element known to mankind," Every sensitive person," saysHoratio W. Dresser, "is aware ofmental atmospheres surrounding persons and places, just as the odoremanates from and surrounds a rose. This is especially noticeable in achurch, or in some great cathedralwhere, for ages, men have bowed inworship in accordance with their particular form of religion, and have lefttheir influence behind them. Everyhousehold, town, or city has its peculiar mentality, the analysis of whichrevealsthecharacteristicsminds that produceoftheit."A wonderfully stimulating atmosphere pervades a great university, causing a marked change in thethought, the manners, and even thedress of the novice, who, if he be especiallysusceptible, stimulated byit.isoften over-Wherever man has19

Character, and homage fromnot onlywritten in the face, expressed in conduct and language, but is sent forth asa thought atmosphere. Atmospheresimpinge and leave their impressionson each other, revealing the nature, thought, and feeling of the personality that gives rise to them. This is,evidently, the reason why first impressions are usually correct, andwhy depression and other states offeeling are passed from mind tomind. Some delicately organizedpeople find it inadvisable to go intosociety except at rare intervals; forthey get entangled in these atmospheres, and do not know how to throwthem off. Others seem to have thehappy art of leaving a part of themselves behind, of making every onethen,21is

It is not enough, however, that the mental storehouse be.well stocked, for that of itself wouldpossess no attractive feature but, in;stead of manifesting a selfish spirit inwithholding the good things gleanedfrom the intellectual field, we shouldfreely give them out. We are alwaysenriched by unselfishly giving; towithhold would be to secure only inpart. If a vessel were loaded with themost precious gems, and it remainedanchored in river, lake, or ocean, itscargo would possess no value whatever, the value depending upon its22

In thecrowded thoroughfares of life wejostle our brother on the right, wejostle our brother on the left, toooften regardless of the sorrows thatent;we mightalleviate, the shadows wemight dispel by just a word, a look,a warm hand-grasp, and thereby givea spiritual uplift not only to the onewe cast the ray of lightbut also reflexly to ourselves.in whose life"Whenour eyes melt not with an-other's woes,Methinks't is time they should forever close."Professor Eiddle says, "When youfind a fellow that is weaker thanyourself give him a boost; the exer-you strength."All things are reflex, in the spiritual as well as in the mental realm. My brother, he cannot be inyour way unless he is ahead of you.Good and evil are ever contendingfor supremacy, although evil is butperverted good. This is well expressedin the following beautiful allegory astold among the Turks: " Every manhas two guardian angels, one on hisright shoulder and one on his left. When doing good, the angel on theright shoulder notes it down and setshis sealupondone forever.it,forWhenwhatisevil isdone iscommit-on the left shoulderwrites it down, but he waits untilmidnight before he seals it. It maycost sorrow, suffering, and tears butback of it all there is a purpose and, sometime, when all life's lessonsshall have been learned, that purposemay be revealed to us, and throughour tears we may see the wisdom ofthe trials and tribulations throughwhich we were obliged to pass, andour spiritual magnetism shall partake of the purifying process, as weadd other pages to the chapters of ourbook in this little span of life." Writing a page blotted with tears,Pilled with pain, anguish and fears; But when God's light on it shall fall,It may be the fairest page of all."28

;PERSONAL MAGNETISMAs apractical illustration of doinggood when the opportunity presentsitself, I cite but one case in many asan aid to the development of thespiritual magnetism, a case comingunder my own observation. On a bright and beautiful morning, when all nature was refreshed andthrobbing with the rejuvenatingspiritwecall Life,amanexception-andwell developed mentally andally well developed physically, fairlyunison with thebeautiful and invigorating surroundingsthis man met a brother man,an entire stranger, who was out ofharmony with these same surroundings.Noting the dejected look onthe face of the stranger, he saw anopportunity to say the right word atthe right time and in the right placetherefore, out of the very fulness ofhis soul he said, with a pleasant voiceand cheery smile, "Good morning, myspiritually, his soul in—29

"Dowhat?" inquired the man of health."I was just going to end it all at theriver, but you have saved my life byyour kindly greeting."Both were benefited; both had aspiritual uplift; seed was sown onfertile soil that brought forth fruitafter its kind. Let us ever bear inmind that our greatest happiness isreflex it is that which comes back tous from the joy we have given others. In no better way can you cultivateand develop spiritual magnetism."Inasmuch as ye have done it unto;30

PERSONAL MAGNETISMone of the least of these my brethren,ye have done it unto me."The following poem by Helen HuntJackson bears out this thought admirably:If I can liveTo make some pale face brighter andto givesecond lustre to some tear-dimmedAeye,Or e'en to impartOne throb of comfort to an achingheart,Orcheer someing by;waywornsoul in pass-If I can lendA strong hand to the fallen, or defendTheright against a single enviousstrain,Mylife,Perhaps, ofthough bare, that seemeth dearmuchand fairTo us of earth, will notvain.31have been in

Physical exercises alone will notdo it, as they often tend to dissipate32

Aman may have a wonderful physique, and yet be lacking in vital force onthereis;hand a man may be slightin build and apparently weak, andyet have great vitality. So it is withenergy. Power is energy in reposethe otherforceisEvenenergy in action.in physical attractivenessmayitbe suggestive of brute strengthThis is the case where the animal overbalances the mental and thespiritual. Man is, by nature, a tri-unebeingmental, spiritual, and physical, and should be so developed as tobe attractive from all sides of histhree-fold nature, but the over-development of any one of these may beproductive of abnormalities to suchan extent as to result in monstrosities for there are mental and spiritonly.—;33

;PERSONAL MAGNETISMual monstrosities just as surely asthere are physical monstrosities.WHATTHIS POWER?ISPersonal magnetism (physical) issometimes called human electricity.Be that as it may, by whatsoever nameit may be known, its character is certainly electrical. This electro-magnetic influenceof a vibratory character, isand gener-ated by the principle of life. Thisenergizing element becomesstale by non-use wasted by over-useand produces nervousness by misuse.Electricity is, somehow, inseparably connected with the ultimateatoms of matter and in the same mysterious manner the universal lifeforce is connected with every nerve, fibre, and molecule of animal creation. If electricity and nerve-forceare not identical, they are so nearlyvital,;;34

PERSONAL MAGNETISMAll force is generated within fromlife essentials— air, food, andwater. The same elements exist fortheallpersons, but all persons do nothave the same force. While the difference may be one of temperament orconstitution, Iaminclined to thinkmore largely due to the fact thatby some persons the elements withinit isreach are not fully utilized.HOW TO UTILIZE AND ECONOMIZE ITIt is not altogether what we earn, but what we save, that counts in thelong run. It is the husbanding ofthe forces within us.Professor Riddell has aptly said:" The electric dynamo is an expres-There are four general ways in which it may be directed: (1) It may be passed throughthe motor of the electric car, and theforce is expressed as power; (2) itsion of power.maybe passed as a sympathetic cur36

It will readily be seen thatyou cannot waste the force in anywithout detracting in acorresponding degree from yourstrength of personal magnetism indirectionother directions.SELF-PROTECTIONAsbodies tend to partwith their magnetism to the earth, itfollows that human electricity is being constantly subjected to this influence. Should it be drawn off in undue proportion to the needs of theall electrifiedbody, the system becomes weak andderanged. It thus becomes necessaryto conserve the human electricity. This is done by insulation by placinga non-conducting substance— usually;—betweenrubber, or cork and rubberthe outer and inner sole of the shoe.done when the shoes are made.Silk hose answer the same purposeso long as they remain free fromThisismoisture.38

Very true, butwe musttivealsoremember that primi-man needed noclothing to pro-him from heat and cold becausean absolute state of nature perfecteconomy existed in this matter. Iftectinwe did not violate nature in so manyways we would have no need to economize on this one. Civilization requiresthat all natural forces be temperedand controlled. The strenuousness ofmodern life makes greater drafts upon the vitality, and we live less in thesunshine and fresh air. Thus, insulation is a preventive and safeguardpromoting health and longevity, andadds greatly to physical magnetism. This theory may seem antagonisticto the believer in nature-cure,whoseeks health by coming in direct contact with Mother Earth. This is not mere speculativetheory, but the result of thorough investigation and practical demonstration.However,if41a conclusionis
