There’s a lakelocated in one corner of the park. Each time I jog by this lake, I see the same elderlywoman sitting at the water’s edge with a small metal cage beside her.2This past Sunday my curiosity got the best of me, so I stopped jogging and walked over toher. As I got closer, I realized that the metal cage was in fact a small trap. There werethree turtles, unharmed, slowly walking around the base of the trap. She had a fourth turtlein her lap that she was carefully scrubbing with a spongy brush.345“Hello,” I said. “I see you here every Sunday morning. If you don’t mind my nosiness, I’dlove to know what you’re doing with these turtles.” She smiled. “I’m cleaning off theirshells,” she replied. “Anything on a turtle’s shell, like algae or scum, reduces the turtle’sability to absorb heat and hinders its ability to move around. It can also corrode andweaken the shell over time.” “Wow! That’s really nice of you!” I exclaimed. She went on: “I spend a couple of hours each Sunday morning, relaxing by this lake andhelping these little guys out. It’s my own strange way of making a difference.” “But don’tmost freshwater turtles live their whole lives with algae and scum hanging from theirshells?” I asked. “Yep, sadly, they do,” she replied.I scratched my head and asked if she did not think her time could be spend better as herefforts are kind and all, but there are fresh water turtles living in lakes all around the world, and 99% of these turtles don’t have kind people like her to help them clean off their shells.I said she should not take any offense but I was wondering how exactly her localized effortsare making a difference.6The woman giggled aloud. She then looked down at the turtle in her lap, scrubbed off thelast piece of algae from its shell, and said, “Sweetie, if this little guy could talk, he’d tell you Ijust made all the difference in his world.”7The moral of this story is that you can change the world – maybe not all at once, but oneperson, one animal, and one good deed at a time. Wake up every morning and actz likewhat you do, makes a difference because it does. [Source: “Stay positive” by Joane Geldor, 2013]DemoNW/JUNE/ENGFAL/ EMIS/6*******510152025

Spending cash makes yourmoney more real, and prevents you from overspending. Put your cash in envelopes each month andmark them clearly for their purposes. When they are empty, that means your money is spent. If you cannot afford to put R1000 away a month to save, start by putting R50 – R100 away everyweek. You will not really feel the loss but the reward will pay off at the end of the month.Do not get catalogues or emailed announcements from companies trying to sell you stuff. Theirannouncements of sales or cool new products make it very tempting to buy something you do notneed. You could save a lot of money by just running around the block, track or on the road and maybe bybuying some simple weights and bars. Other exercises, push-ups, squats, lunges can be done athome instead of paying an expensive monthly fee for services you do not use.Eat at home. Make home-made pizzas with a ready–made crust, some sauce, cheese and veggies.Staying home and cooking is much cheaper than eating out. Also, the most overprized item ispopcorn, so do it yourself at home. Not only is it healthier, but also a great way to bond with thefamily and have family nights.[Source: “How to save money” by P.
