Methods of CalibrationEZIP participates in the RadioactivityMeasurements Assurance Program(MAP) conducted by the NationalInstitute of Standards and Technology(NIST) in cooperation with the NuclearEnergy Institute (NEI).In this program NIST provides blindsamples which are assayed by EZIP,with the results sent to NIST. NIST thenreports back to EZIP the differencebetween the NIST calibrated value andthe EZIP calibrated value. In addition,EZIP routinely sends finished productsto NIST for product verification andcalibration. Over the years, EZIP hasmaintained a high degree of precisionand accuracy with NIST. Traceability isestablished and maintained throughthis cross-calibration process.EZIP is also accredited through DKD(a globally recognized calibrationaccreditation agency) with theGerman National Laboratory (PTB) tooffer DKD accredited calibrations fora large number of nuclides that EZIPregularly handles in its manufacturingfacilities. Please contact customerservice for availability of DKDaccredited certification for yoursources.5A certificate of calibration is providedfor each traceable source as eitherNIST or DKD. The certificate providesa statement of traceability, a completedescription of the physical andnuclear characteristics of the source, adescription of the calibration methodand quantitative identification ofdetected impurities. Activities aregiven in the Curie and SI systems.Sources are manufactured withcontained activity values of /-15%of the requested activity value unlessotherwise noted in the catalog. Allelectroplated sources have a toleranceof /-30% of the total containedactivity. The uncertainty value of themeasured activity for a NIST traceablecalibration can be as low as /3% at the 99% confidence level(k 2.58), and is no greater than /-5% unless otherwise noted inthe catalog. The uncertainty valueof the measured activity for a DKDaccredited calibration is typically 3– 3.5% at the 95% confidence level(k 2) for those nuclides in EZIP’sDKD Scope of Accreditation. Pleasecontact customer service regardingthe specific measurement uncertaintylimit for each nuclide.EZIP maintains a variety of state-ofthe-art detector systems to calibratesources and to check for impurities. The calibration equipment is checkeddaily using NIST traceable standardsand stability is further ensured bymaintaining the instrumentation ina carefully controlled environment. All assay equipment and techniquesare verified through MAP on an ongoing basis.Sources are either calibrated directlyagainst NIST standards or by usingNIST traceable assay equipment andtechniques.TraceabilityEckert & Ziegler Isotope Productsis committed to ensuring thetraceability of its radionuclidecalibration standards. For more thantwenty-five years Eckert & ZieglerIsotope Products has participated inMeasurements Assurance Programs(MAPs) with the National Instituteof Standards and Technology (NIST)and has successfully completedover 1800 individual measurementson 40 different radionuclides.EZIP's participation in the NIST/Nuclear Energy Institute (NIST/NEI)Measurements Assurance Program forthe Nuclear Power Industry satisfiesthe requirements of the United States’Nuclear Regulatory Commission’sRegulatory Guide 4.15, Revision 1,1979, and ANSI N42.22-1995 AmericanNational Standard – Traceability ofRadioactive Sources to the NationalInstitute of Standards and Technology(NIST) and Associated InstrumentQuality Control.Eckert & Ziegler Isotope Products is anactive participant with the AmericanNational Standards Institute (ANSI)subcommittee on radioactivitymeasurements. EZIP's personnel haveassisted in the writing of the standardon traceability (ANSI N42.22) and areassisting in the development of anaccreditation program for standardssuppliers.Half-Life UncertaintiesThe half-lives for each nuclidementioned in the EZIP StandardsCatalog are listed along with theiruncertainties and the reference fromwhich these values were taken onpages 76–79 of the catalog. In allother sections of the catalog wherehalf-lives are stated, the uncertaintieshave been omitted.Photon Emissions Usedin Source CalibrationA listing of the principal emissionsare listed for every nuclide in all theindividual sections of this productcatalog. The specific values usedin the calibration of the sourcesare listed for each nuclide on pages76–79.R&C2007v1.0

Special Isotopes

Reference and Calibration SourcesThe following isotopes may require consultation with Technical Support before ordering. The information in this table is meantto alert the end user of these isotopes to certain features and issues associated with them.Special Isotopes7Si-32P-32 daughter is in equilibrium. Glass containers are not suitable for long-term storage of Si-32 solutions and solutions sold by EZIP are packaged in polypropylenev-vials.Ni-63Beta sources have no cover, and due to self-absorption within sources, they are certified for contained activity, and separately for surface emission rate.Ge-68Ga-68 daughter (half-life: 68 minutes) is in equilibrium; both the positrons and 1077 keV gamma rays come from Ga-68.Sr-90Y-90 daughter (half-life: 2.67 days) is in equilibrium. Users are urged to distinguish between orders for Sr-90 only and Sr-90/Y-90 taking into account activityof Y-90 present. The certified activity is generally for Sr-90 only. The surface emission rate for beta sources is for Sr-90, plus Y-90.Zr-95Nb-95 daughter is generally not in equilibrium. Glass containers are not suitable for long-term storage of Zr-95 solutions, and EZIP packages Zr-95 in polypropylenev-vials.Ru-106Rh-106 daughter (half-life: 29.8 seconds) is in equilibrium. All gamma rays come from the daughter Rh-106.I-131SimSimulated I-131 is made from Ba-133 and Cs-137 to simulate I-131 in terms of gamma emissions. I-131 has gamma rays at 364 keV (81.2%) and at 636, 642, and723 keV with branching ratios of 7.27, 0.220 and 1.80%, respectively. Ba-133 has gamma rays at 356 (61.94%) and 384 keV (8.905%). The gamma rays at 356and 384 keV from Ba-133 are used to simulate the 364 keV gamma ray of I-131. The 662 keV gamma rays from Cs-137 are used to simulate the 636, 642, and 723keV gamma rays of I-131. To produce the same number of gamma rays as 1 uCi of I-131 (at 364 keV), the amount of Ba-133 required will be (81.2/61.94 8.90) 1.146 µCi and the amount of Cs-137 needed will be (7.27 0.220 1.80)/85.1 0.1092 µCi.Pb-210Bi-210 daughter is in equilibrium.Ra-226Daughters (Rn-222, Po-218, Pb-214, Bi-214, Po-214 Pb-210, Bi-210, Po-210) may not be in equilibrium. Radon is a noble gas and will diffuse from the surface ofits source and contaminate exposed surfaces. Open sources must be handled with caution.Th-228Daughters (Ra-224, Rn-220, Po-216, Pb-212, Bi-
