Discussion Many years ago, some fathers kept histories oftheir families. Usually, just before a father died, he wouldgive his family history to his son, who wouldcontinue writing the history. Families would keep their histories like this formany years.

Discussion Prophets too wrote what happened to theirfamilies. But they also wrote about how HeavenlyFather helped them and about the peoplewho lived around them at that time.

Discussion Heavenly Father called aprophet named Mormon togather all the histories of hispeople, copy the mostimportant parts, and writethem on thin sheets of gold, like pages of a book. These were called gold plates.

Discussion Why do you think Mormonwrote the records on sheets ofgold instead of paper?

Discussion Why do you think Mormonwrote the records on sheets ofgold instead of paper? Gold is a metal that will last. Gold does not fall apart likepaper and other materials orrust like many other metals.

Discussion Mormon used gold platesbecause they would last a longtime. It took many years forMormon to finish writing onthe plates. Before Mormon died, he gavethe plates to his son Moroni.

Discussion When Moroni had finishedwriting on the gold plates,Heavenly Father told him tobury the plates in a hill. Heavenly Father knew that thewritings on the gold plateswould be important to peopleliving many years later.

Discussion Moroni made a stone box tobury the plates in so that theywould be safe until HeavenlyFather wanted his children toread them.

When Joseph Smith was 14 years old, manychurches were claiming to be true, and he didnot know which one to join.

One day Joseph read James 1:5 in the Bible: “Ifany of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God.” Joseph needed to know which church was right,so he decided to ask God.

On a spring morning Joseph went into the woodsnear his home to pray.

As he knelt down and started to pray, Satan triedto stop him. Joseph prayed harder, askingHeavenly Father for help.

Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ came to Josephin a pillar of light. Heavenly Father pointed toJesus and said: “This is My Beloved Son. HearHim!”

Joseph asked which church he should join. Jesus told him not to join any of them becausethey were all wrong.

When Joseph told some people what he hadseen and heard, they laughed at him. The leaders of many local churches persecutedhim.

Three years went by. One night Joseph was praying to be forgiven ofhis sins and to know what he should do.

An angel namedMoroni appearedand told Josephabout a book thatwas written on goldplates. Joseph was totranslate these platesinto English.

After Moroni left, Joseph thought about whatMoroni had told him. Moroni came back two more times that night.

The next day Joseph went to the top of the HillCumorah, which he had seen in a vision. There he found a big rock. He pried the rock up with a stick.

Beneath the rock was a stone box. As Joseph looked into the box, he saw the goldplates.

Moroni appeared andtold Joseph not totake the plates but tocome back on thesame day each yearfor four years. Each time Josephwent, Moroni taughthim.

After four years Joseph was finally allowed totake the gold plates. He used the Urim and Thummim to translatesome of them.

Scribes helped Joseph by writing the words as hetranslated them from the gold plates.

Joseph took the translatedwords to a printer and hadthem made into a book.

The book is called the Book of Mormon. It tells about people who lived in America manyyears ago. It also tells about Jesus Christ, the Son of God.

When Moroni was told to take the Gold Plates,Moroni told Joseph Smith to be very careful withthem and to guard them with his life.

Questions Do any of you know what the Urim andThummim are?– The Urim and Thummim are like special glassesthrough which Joseph could look to help himtranslate the ancient writing on the plates.– With Heavenly Father’s help and by using the Urimand Thummim, Joseph was able to translate thewords on the gold plates into words we couldunderstand.– When the translation into English was completed, the book was printed.– It was called the Book of Mormon.

The book of Mormon is what Josephtranslated from the gold plates.

After he translated the Book of Mormon, JosephSmith returned the plates to Moroni.
