Even then, you could experience side effects that increase thelikelihood of falling. Along with injuries, falls canresult in hospital trips and even disability.Review all your medicines with your doctor on aregular basis. Ask about potential side effects if youdon’t know what they are, as well as symptoms thatneed emergency care. Certain medicine combinationscan also increase chances for sideeffects. And as the number ofmedicines you take increases, sodoes your fall risk.Be sure to tell your doctor aboutany side effects you may have. Theymay change your medicine dosageor replace it with a different type.(Don’t adjust or stop taking medicine onyour own.) They can also check for other healthproblems and talk about ways to avoid falls.bluecrossma.com/medicare 5

BY THE NUMBERS:The glycemic indexWhen you’re rushed, it’s easy to grab a bagel on the run orfries at the drive-through. You know it’s not the healthiestway to go. But besides calories and fat, there’ssomething else to think about—the glycemic index (GI).The GI measures how quickly the carbohydrates in a foodraise your blood sugar (glucose). The higher the GI, the fasteryour glucose goes up—and that may lead to health problems inthe long run.The GI was originally developed to help people with diabeteschoose foods. But others may find it useful, too.*A lesson on carbsWhen you eat, your body converts digestible carbs into glucose, which gives your cells energy. Glucose also signals yourpancreas to make insulin, which helps cells absorb glucose. Youdigest and convert each food’s carbs at different rates. After a high-GI meal, you may still feel hungry as your bodytries to adjust to the rapid rise in glucose and insulin levels. Andeating too many high-GI foods can lead to an increased risk fortype 2 diabetes and heart disease. You digest a low-GI diet more slowly. This gradually increasesyour blood sugar and insulin. You may be less proneto insulin resistance, a risk factor for disease.Putting the GI to workA low GI alone doesn’t make a foodhealthy. For example, chocolate has alower GI than oatmeal. You have tobalance the GI with basic nutritionprinciples. Some tips: Eat foods with a low to medium GIwithin a balanced diet of fruits, vegetables, healthy fats, low-fat dairy, whole grains, and healthy proteins. Watch portion sizes. If you eat a high-GI food, combine itwith a low-GI food to balance the effectson blood sugar. Look for less-processed grains. Limit your intake of high-GI beverages such asfruit juice and other sugar-sweetened drinks.* Dietary needs and preferences differ for everyone. Call our nutritionistsor talk to your doctor if you have any questions.6 HEALTHY TIMES WINTER/SPRING 2022Zesty grilledchicken with thymeServe this delicious chicken with wild riceand a nonstarchy vegetable—like carrots, broccoli, or spinach—for a healthy dinnerwith a low glycemic index.Ingredients2 tsp.
