But that wasbefore the crazy hacker caused alltheir feeds to malfunction, sendingthem to the hospital to lie around withnothing inside their heads for days. And it was before Titus met Violet, abeautiful, brainy teenage girl who hasdecided to fight the feed and itsomnipresent ability to categorizehuman thoughts and desires.Following in the footsteps of GeorgeOrwell, Anthony Burgess, and KurtVonnegut Jr., M. T. Anderson hascreated a not-so-brave new world —and a smart, savage satire that hascaptivated readers with its view of animagined future that veers unnervinglyclose to the here and now. Taunted into assertinghis “masculinity” by his ambitiouswife, Macbeth chooses to embrace theWeird Sisters’ prophecy and kill hisking–and thus, seals his own doom.Fast-moving and bloody, this dramahas the extraordinary energy thatderives from a brilliant plot repletewith treachery and murder, and fromShakespeare’s compelling portrait ofthe ultimate battle between a mind andits own guilt. These include: Silent Sustained Reading (SSR): As an English teacher, I feel that the best way to get students to enjoyreading is to allow them time to read a choice novel that best reflects their interests. Therefore, studentswill have twenty minutes of SSR at least twice per week to read their choice novel. Students will beexpected to complete at least one choice novel by the end of each quarter. Vocabulary/Grammar: Continual practice of vocabulary and grammar is necessary to sustain growingreaders and writers. We will study root words that students will use to make word recognition earlier. Wewill review grammar strategies on a weekly basis and grammar use within students’ writing. Free/Quick Writes: Similar to the main purpose of SSR, I believe it is also important to allow students theopportunity to express themselves through writing. Therefore, students will often be prompted to writefor a short period of time in their notebooks, sometimes in answer to a question posed by Ms. Neal; atother times students will have the opportunity to choose what thoughts and ideas they would like toexpress.Student Expectations
