Friends of the Fond du Lac Senior CenterAMONG FRIENDSNewsletterNovember 2021Proudly serving the Fond du Lac Community for over 54 years!.where friends meet!

CATHY’S CORNERIt seemed natural to write about thankfulness during the month of November. Before youreyes glaze over because it’s so cliché, hear me out.Several years ago I wrote an article about how our brains are wired to the negative, and howscience has shown that it takes three (Yes! Three!) positive interactions to offset everynegative interaction. Back in the days of the cavemen, the human brain worked as a naturaldefense mechanism, wired to identify threats to survival – i.e., negative things in theenvironment. While humans have evolved, our brains have not, which is why we still noticeand hold on to negative interactions. Negative interactions can be anything – a sad newsstory, a rude comment on social media, hearing criticism about ourselves or someone wecare about, burning dinner, spending time with someone that complains a lot, getting cut offin traffic – any of these things can change our mood or our day.The good news is that with some effort, we can change how our brains processes thenegative and improve our quality of life! So back to the thankfulness thing. This month as we celebrate Thanksgiving, I challenge you to spend the month being mindfulof things that you are grateful for. Knowing what we know about the brain, this isn’t assimple as being thankful for one thing a day. We have to intentionally identify THREE thingseach day – three UNIQUE things each day – that we are thankful for, and intentionally thinkabout how these things bring positivity to our lives. This may not sound like much, especially for the first few days of the month, but to find threethings for 30 days straight will probably challenge us. The good thing is that we know if wechallenge our brains, and challenge ourselves in how we look at the world, we can improveour quality of life – and that is something to be thankful for!To help you succeed at this challenge, I’ve included a grid sothat you can check off your three things each day ofNovember. You can do it! I do know that one of my boxeswill be checked as I think of the wonderful people in ourcommunity that we are able to serve. I truly appreciate howkind and thoughtful so many of you are to Sarah and I.Thank you!Have a great month!Cathy
