3CHAPTER 1DESCRIPTION OF FREEMASONRY3

4In its broadest and most comprehensive sense Freemasonry is asystem of morality and social ethics, and a philosophy of life, all ofsimple and fundamental character, incorporating a broadhumanitarianism and, though treating life as a practical experience, subordinates the material to the spiritual; it is of no sect but finding truthin all; it is moral but not pharisaic; it demands sanity rather than sanctity;it is tolerant but not supine; it seeks truth but does not define truth; iturges its votaries to think but does tell them what to think; it despisesignorance but does not proscribe the ignorant; it fosters education butproposes no curriculum; it espouses political liberty and the dignity ofman but has no platform or propaganda; it believes in the nobility andusefulness of life; it is modest and not militant; it is moderate, universal, and so liberal as to permit each individual to form and express his ownopinion, even as to what Freemasonry is or ought to be, and invites himto improve it if he can.Freemasonry is a fraternity composed of moral men of legal agewho believe in GOD and, of their own free will, .receive in lodgesdegrees which depict a system of morality that, as they grow in maturity, teaches them to be tolerant of the beliefs of others, to be patriotic, lawabiding, temperate in all things, to aid the unfortunate, to practiceBrotherly Love, and to faithfully accept and discharge solemnobligations.4

35ABOU BEN ADHEMAbou Ben Adhem, (may his tribe increase)Awoke one night from a deep dream of peaceAnd, within the moonlight, in his roomMaking it rich and like a Lilly in bloomAn Angel writing in a book of gold;-Exceeding peace had made Ben Adhem bold,And to the presence in the room, he said,“What Wriest Thou?” The vision raised its head,And with a look made of all sweet accord,Answered. “The names of those who love the Lord.””And is mine one,” said Adhem, “Nay not so.”Replied the Angel. Abou spoke more lowOut cheerily still; and said, “I pray thee thenWrite me as one that loves his fellow men.”The Angel wrote and vanished. The next nightIt came again with a great wakening light,And showed the names whom love of God had blessed,And lo Ben Adhem’s name led all the rest.Author unknown.35
