A section of the prismis a triangle ABC as shown in the figure.7.3 Dispersion of lightWhen a narrow beam of white light passesthrough a prism, it splits up into a band of sevencolours. Splitting of white light into its sevenconstituent (acronym VIBGYOR) colours onpassing through a dispersive medium, i.e., theglass prism is called dispersion of light.Out of seven colours, the violet deviatesmaximum and red deviates minimum. As aresult, the coloured band obtained on the screenis called spectrum.7.2 Incident, Refracted and EmergentraysRefraction through a prism is shown in the givenfigure. In this figure, PQE is the incident ray,EF the refracted ray and FRS the emergentray. i is the angle of incidence, e the angleof emergence and D the angle of deviationsuffered by light ray due to refraction at the1. Dispersion is caused by the difference indeviation angles for light rays of differentwavelengths. The violet light has minimumwavelength, so, it deviates the maximum. To Purchase Hard Book of From Amazon Click Here. For More Details Whatsapp at 8905629969

The seven constituent colours of white lightsplitted by a glass prism can be recombinedto form white light by passing them throughanother identical prism fixed in an invertedposition.3. Rainbow forms after rains because ofdispersion on light and the interval reflectioncaused by tiny water droplets suspendedin air. Thus, the tiny water droplets act asprisms.A rainbow always forms in a directionopposite to that of the sun. In a rainbow, theinnermost arc is violet and the outermost arc isred.7.4 atmospheric refraction1. In the atmosphere, the layers of coolerair have higher optical density and act asoptically denser medium. The layers ofwarmer air have lower optical density andact as optically rarer medium.Atmospheric refraction is the refractionof light while passing from one air layer toanother air layer of different optical densities(or refractive indices).2. Stars twinkle in night sky due to atmosphericrefraction. The apparent positions of astar appears slightly higher than its actualposition.3. Due to atmospheric refraction, the sun isvisible to us 2 minutes before actual sunrise.Again, the sun remains visible for 2 minuteseven after actual sunset. So, apparentduration of time from sunrise to sunset is 4minutes more than the actual duration.4. Due to atmospheric refraction, the shapeof the sun at the time of sunrise or sunsetappears to be of oval shape.7.5 Scattering of lightThe process due to which light gets deflectedand diffused all over as a result of its interplaywith tiny matter particles is called scattering oflight. The tiny particle which causes scatteringof light is called the scatterer particle.1. The colour of the scattered light is basedupon the size a of the scattering particleas compared to wavelength λ of the light. If a λ , then light of shorter wavelengthsis scattered much more than light of longerwavelengths. According to Rayleigh’s law ofscattering, the intensity I of scattered light isinversely proportional to fourth power of itswavelength, i.e., I ? 1/λ 4 (when a λ) .2. The phenomenon of scattering of light bysuspended particles present in the medium(through which a light beam is passing) andmaking the path of the light beam visible,is called Tyndall effect. The path of a lightbeam passing through a colloidal solutionbecomes visible because of scattering of lightcaused by colloidal particles. When lightbeam form the headlight of an automobilecomes through mist and fog, then particlesbecome visible because of Tyndall effect. Theparticles scatter the light beam and becomevisible.3. Air molecules have a size much smaller thanthe wavelength of light. Hence, they scatterblue-violet light of smaller wavelengthsmuch more than red-orange light of longerwavelengths. Consequently, clear sky appearsto be blue. But when looking the sky from aspaceship, it appears to be dark as there areno air particles in space to cause scatteringof light.4. Danger signals are always red in colour. This is because red colour has the maximumwavelength and hence is scattered the leastby atmospheric particles. Thus, red signal isvisible from a longer distance.5. The sun appears reddish at the time ofsunrise and sunset. This is because sun isnear the horizon and sunlight has to travela longer distance to reach our eyes. Allshorter wavelengths are scattered away byair particles and only red colour reaches oureyes. ******To Purchase Hard Book of From Amazon Click Here. For More Details Whatsapp at 8905629969
