The entire Amplified Bible was first published in 1965.In its quest to make the Bible understandable to contemporary readers, thetranslators chose to use a system of amplification to reveal any shades ofmeaning that might exist. The translators felt that amplification would help thereader comprehend what the Hebrew or Greek listener understood. The symbols used for the types of amplification are:Parentheses and dashes, which signify additional phases of meaningincluded in the original word, phrase, or clause of the original language.Commas are used to set off titles of Deity.Brackets contain justified clarifying words or comments not actuallyexpressed in the original text.Italics point out familiar passages now recognized as not adequatelysupported by the original manuscripts.

Genesis91IN THE beginning God (prepared, formed, fashioned, and) created theheavens and the earth.2The earth was without form and anempty waste, and darkness was uponthe face of the very great deep. TheSpirit of God was moving (hovering, brooding) over the face of the waters.3And God said, Let there be light; andthere was light.4And God saw that the light was good(suitable, pleasant) and He approved it;and God separated the light from thedarkness.5And God called the light Day, and thedarkness He called Night. And therewas evening and there was morning, one day.6And God said, Let there be a firmament[the expanse of the sky] in the midst ofthe waters, and let it separate thewaters [below] from the waters [above].7And God made the firmament [theexpanse] and separated the waterswhich were under the expanse from thewaters which were above the expanse. And it was so.8And God called the firmament Heavens. And there was evening and there wasmorning, a second day.And God said, Let the waters under theheavens be collected into one place [ofstanding], and let the dry land appear. And it was so.10God called the dry land Earth, and theaccumulated waters He called Seas. And God saw that this was good (fitting, admirable) and He approved it.11And God said, Let the earth put forth[tender] vegetation: plants yielding seedand fruit trees yielding fruit whose seedis in itself, each according to its kind, upon the earth. And it was so.12The earth brought forth vegetation:plants yielding seed according to theirown kinds and trees bearing fruit inwhich was their seed, each according toits kind. And God saw that it was good(suitable, admirable) and He approved it.13And there was evening and there wasmorning, a third day.14And God said, Let there be lights inthe expanse of the heavens to separatethe day from the night, and let them besigns and tokens [of God's providentcare], and [to mark] seasons, days, andyears,15And let them be lights in the expanseof the sky to give light upon the earth. And it was so.16And God made the two great lights-the greater light (the sun) to rule the day

and the lesser light (the moon) to rulethe night. He also made the stars. And God set them in the expanse ofthe heavens to give light upon the earth, domestic animals according to theirkinds, and everything that creeps uponthe earth according to its kind. And Godsaw that it was good (fitting, pleasant)and He approved it.182617To rule over the day and over the night, and to separate the light from thedarkness. And God saw that it was good(fitting, pleasant) and He approved it.19And there was evening and there wasmorning, a fourth day.20And God said, Let the waters bringforth abundantly and swarm with livingcreatures, and let birds fly over the earthin the open expanse of the heavens.21God created the great sea monstersand every living creature that moves, which the waters brought forthabundantly, according to their kinds, andevery winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good (suitable, admirable) and He approved it.22And God blessed them, saying, Befruitful, multiply, and fill the waters in theseas, and let the fowl multiply in theearth.23And there was evening and there wasmorning, a fifth day.24And God said, Let the earth bring forthliving creatures according to their kinds:livestock, creeping things, and [wild]beasts of the earth according to theirkinds. And it was so.25And God made the [wild] beasts of theearth according to their kinds, andGod said, Let Us [Father, Son, andHoly Spirit] make mankind in Our image, after Our likeness, and let them havecomplete authority over the fish of thesea, the birds of the air, the [tame]beasts, and over all of the earth, andover everything that creeps upon theearth.27So God created man in His own image,in the image and likeness of God Hecreated him; male and female Hecreated them.28And God blessed them and said tothem, Be fruitful, multiply, and fill theearth, and subdue it [using all its vastresources in the service of God andman]; and have dominion over the fishof the sea, the birds of the air, and overevery living creature that moves uponthe earth.29And God said, See, I have given youevery plant yielding seed that is on theface of all the land and every tree withseed in its fruit; you shall have them forfood.30And to all the animals on the earth andto every bird of the air and to everythingthat creeps on the ground--to everythingin which there is the breath of life--Ihave given every green plant for food. And it was so.31And God saw everything that He hadmade, and behold, it was very good

(suitable, pleasant) and He approved itcompletely. And there was evening andthere was morning, a sixth day.2THUS THE heavens and the earthwere finished, and all the host of them.2And on the seventh day God ended Hiswork which He had done; and He restedon the seventh day from all His workwhich He had done.3And God blessed (spoke good of) theseventh day, set it apart as His own,and hallowed it, because on it Godrested from all His work which He hadcreated and done.4This is the history of the heavens andof the earth when they were created. Inthe day that the Lord God made theearth and the heavens-5When no plant of the field was yet inthe earth and no herb of the field hadyet sprung up, for the Lord God had not[yet] caused it to rain upon the earth andthere was no man to till the ground,6But there went up a mist (fog, vapor)from the land and watered the wholesurface of the ground-7Then the Lord God formed man fromthe dust of the ground and breathed intohis nostrils the breath or spirit of life, andman became a living being.8And the Lord God planted a gardentoward the east, in Eden [delight]; andthere He put the man whom He hadformed (framed, constituted).9And out of the ground the Lord Godmade to grow every tree that is pleasantto the sight or to be desired--good(suitable, pleasant) for food; the tree oflife also in the center of the garden, andthe tree of the knowledge of [thedifference between] good and evil andblessing and calamity.10Now a river went out of Eden to waterthe garden; and from there it dividedand became four [river] heads.11The first is named Pishon; it is the oneflowing around the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold.12The gold of that land is of high quality;bdellium (pearl?) and onyx stone arethere.13The second river is named Gihon; it isthe one flowing around the whole land ofCush.14The third river is named Hiddekel [theTigris]; it is the one flowing east ofAssyria. And the fourth river is theEuphrates.15And the Lord God took the man andput him in the Garden of Eden to tendand guard and keep it.16And the Lord God commanded theman, saying, You may freely eat ofevery tree of the garden;17But of the tree of the knowledge ofgood and evil and blessing and calamityyou shall not eat, for in the day that youeat of it you shall surely die.

18Now the Lord God said, It is not good(sufficient, satisfactory) that the manshould be alone; I will make him ahelpermeet(suitable, adapted, complementary) for him.19And out of the ground the Lord Godformed every [wild] beast and livingcreature of the field and every bird of theair and brought them to Adam to seewhat he would call them; and whateverAdam called every living creature, thatwas its name.20And Adam gave names to all thelivestock and to the birds of the air andto every [wild] beast of the field; but forAdam there was not found a helpermeet(suitable, adapted, complementary) for him.21And the Lord God caused a deepsleep to fall upon Adam; and while heslept, He took one of his ribs or a part ofhis side and closed up the [place with]flesh.22And the rib or part of his side whichthe Lord God had taken from the manHe built up and made into a woman, andHe brought her to the man.23Then Adam said, This [creature] isnow bone of my bones and flesh of myflesh; she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of a man.24Therefore a man shall leave his fatherand his mother and shall become unitedand cleave to his wife, and they shallbecome one flesh.25And the man and his wife were bothnaked and were not embarrassed orashamed in each other's presence.3NOW THE serpent was more subtleand crafty than any living creature of thefield which the Lord God had made. Andhe [Satan] said to the woman, Can itreally be that God has said, You shallnot eat from every tree of the garden?2And the woman said to the serpent, Wemay eat the fruit from the trees of thegarden,3Except the fruit from the tree which is inthe middle of the garden. God has said,You shall not eat of it, neither shall youtouch it, lest you die.4But the serpent said to the woman, Youshall not surely die,5For God knows that in the day you eatof it your eyes will be opened, and youwill be like God, knowing the differencebetween good and evil and blessing andcalamity.6And when the woman saw that the treewas good (suitable, pleasant) for foodand that it was delightful to look at, anda tree to be desired in order to makeone wise, she took of its fruit and ate;and she gave some also to her husband, and he ate.7Then the eyes of them both wereopened, and they knew that they werenaked; and they sewed fig leavestogetherandmadethemselvesapronlike girdles.

8And they heard the sound of the LordGod walking in the garden in the cool ofthe day, and Adam and his wife hidthemselves from the presence of theLord God among the trees of the garden.9But the Lord God called to Adam andsaid to him, Where are you?10He said, I heard the sound of You[walking] in the garden, and I was afraidbecause I was naked; and I hid myself.11And He said, Who told you that youwere naked? Have you eaten of the treeof which I commanded you that youshould not eat?12And the man said, The woman whomYou gave to be with me--she gave me[fruit] from the tree, and I ate.13And the Lord God said to the woman,What is this you have done? And thewoman said, The serpent beguiled(cheated, outwitted, and deceived) me,and I ate.14And the Lord God said to the serpent,Because you have done this, you arecursed above all [domestic] animals andabove every [wild] living thing of thefield; upon your belly you shall go, andyou shall eat dust [and what it contains]all the days of your life.15And I will put enmity between you andthe woman, and between your offspringand her Offspring; He will bruise andtread your head underfoot, and you willlie in wait and bruise His heel.16To the woman He said, I will greatlymultiply your grief and your suffering inpregnancyandthepangsofchildbearing; with spasms of distressyou will bring forth children. Yet yourdesire and craving will be for yourhusband, and he will rule over you.17And to Adam He said, Because youhave listened and given heed to thevoice of your wife and have eaten of thetree of which I commanded you, saying,You shall not eat of it, the ground isunder a curse because of you; in sorrowand toil shall you eat [of the fruits] of itall the days of your life.18Thorns also and thistles shall it bringforth for you, and you shall eat theplants of the field.19In the sweat of your face shall you eatbread until you return to the ground, forout of it you were taken; for dust you areand to dust you shall return.20The man called his wife's name Eve[life spring], because she was themother of all the living.21For Adam also and for his wife theLord God made long coats (tunics) ofskins and clothed them.22And the Lord God said, Behold, theman has become like one of Us [theFather, Son, and Holy Spirit], to know[how to distinguish between] good andevil and blessing and calamity; and now, lest he put forth his hand and take alsofrom the tree of life and eat, and liveforever--

23Therefore the Lord God sent him forthfrom the Garden of Eden to till theground from which he was taken.24So [God] drove out the man; and Heplaced at the east of the Garden ofEden the cherubim and a flaming swordwhich turned every way, to keep andguard the way to the tree of life.4AND ADAM knew Eve as his wife, and she became pregnant and boreCain; and she said, I have gotten andgained a man with the help of the Lord.2And [next] she gave birth to his brotherAbel. Now Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground.3And in the course of time Cain broughtto the Lord an offering of the fruit of theground.4And Abel brought of the firstborn of hisflock and of the fat portions. And theLord had respect and regard for Abeland for his offering,5But for Cain and his offering He had norespect or regard. So Cain wasexceedingly angry and indignant, and helooked sad and depressed.6And the Lord said to Cain, Why are youangry? And why do you look sad anddepressed and dejected?7If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin crouchesat your door; its desire is for you, butyou must master it.8And Cain said to his brother, Let us goout to the field. And when they were inthe field, Cain rose up against Abel hisbrother and killed him.9And the Lord said to Cain, Where isAbel your brother? And he said, I do notknow. Am I my brother's keeper?10And [the Lord] said, What have youdone? The voice of your brother's bloodis crying to Me from the ground.11And now you are cursed by reason ofthe earth, which has opened its mouthto receive your brother's [shed] bloodfrom your hand.12When you till the ground, it shall nolonger yield to you its strength; you shallbe a fugitive and a vagabond on theearth [in perpetual exile, a degradedoutcast].13Then Cain said to the Lord, Mypunishment is greater than I can bear.14Behold, You have driven me out thisday from the face of the land, and fromYour face I will be hidden; and I will be afugitive and a vagabond and a wandereron the earth, and whoever finds me willkill me.15And the Lord said to him, Therefore, ifanyone kills Cain, vengeance shall betaken on him sevenfold. And the Lordset a mark or sign upon Cain, lestanyone finding him should kill him.16So Cain went away from the presenceof the Lord and dwelt in the land of Nod[wandering], east of Eden.

17And Cain's wife [one of Adam'soffspring] became pregnant and boreEnoch; and Cain built a city and namedit after his son Enoch.18To Enoch was born Irad, and Irad wasthe father of Mehujael, and Mehujael thefather of Methusael, and Methusael thefather of Lamech.19And Lamech took two wives; the nameof the one was Adah and of the otherwas Zillah.20Adah bore Jabal; he was the father ofthose who dwell in tents and have cattleand purchase possessions.26And to Seth also a son was born, whom he named Enosh. At that timemen began to call [upon God] by thename of the Lord.5THIS IS the book (the written record, the history) of the generations of theoffspring of Adam. When God createdman, He made him in the likeness ofGod.2He created them male and female andblessed them and named them [both]Adam [Man] at the time they werecreated.321His brother's name was Jubal; he wasthe father of all those who play the lyreand pipe. When Adam had lived 130 years, hehad a son in his own likeness, after hisimage; and he named him Seth.422Zillah bore Tubal-cain; he was theforger of all [cutting] instruments ofbronze and iron. The sister of Tubal-cainwas Naamah.23Lamech said to his wives, Adah andZillah, Hear my voice; you wives ofLamech, listen to what I say; for I haveslain a man [merely] for wounding me,and a young man [only] for striking andbruising me.24If Cain is avenged sevenfold, trulyLamech [will be avenged] seventysevenfold. After he had Seth, Adam lived 800years and had other sons and daughters.5So altogether Adam lived 930 years, and he died.6When Seth was 105 years old, Enoshwas born.7Seth lived after the birth of Enosh 807years and had other sons and daughters.8So Seth lived 912 years, and he died.9When Enosh was 90 years old, Kenanwas born to him.25And Adam's wife again becamepregnant, and she bore a son and calledhis name Seth. For God, she said, hasappointed for me another child insteadof Abel, for Cain slew him.10Enosh lived after the birth of Kenan815 years and had other sons anddaughters.

11So Enosh lived 905 years, and he died.12When Kenan was 70 years old,Mahalalel was born.13Kenan lived after the birth of Mahalalel840 years and had other sons anddaughters.14So Kenan lived 910 years, and he died.24And Enoch walked [in habitualfellowship] with God; and he was not, forGod took him [home with Him].25When Methuselah was 187 years old,Lamech was born to him.26Methuselah lived after the birth ofLamech 782 years and had other sonsand daughters.2715When Mahalalel was 65 years old,Jared was born.So Methuselah lived 969 years, andhe died.1628Mahalalel lived after the birth of Jared830 years and had other sons anddaughters.17So Mahalalel lived 895 years, and hedied.18When Jared was 162 years old, Enochwas born.19Jared lived after the birth of Enoch 800years and had other sons and daughters.20So Jared lived 962 years, and he died.21When Enoch was 65 years old,Methuselah was born.22Enoch walked [in habitual fellowship]with God after the birth of Methuselah300 years and had other sons anddaughters.23So all the days of Enoch were 365years.When Lamech was 182 years old, ason was born.29He named him Noah, saying, This oneshall bring us relief and comfort from ourwork and the [grievous] toil of our handsdue to the ground being cursed by theLord.30Lamech lived after the birth of Noah595 years and had other sons anddaughters.31So all the days of Lamech were 777years, and he died.32After Noah was 500 years old, hebecame the father of Shem, Ham, andJapheth.6WHEN MEN began to multiply on theface of the land and daughters wereborn to them,2The sons of God saw that thedaughters of men were fair, and theytook wives of all they desired and chose.

3Then the Lord said, My Spirit shall notforever dwell and strive with man, for healso is flesh; but his days shall yet be120 years.4There were giants on the earth in thosedays--and also afterward--when thesons of God lived with the daughters ofmen, and they bore children to them. These were the mighty men who wereof old, men of renown.5The Lord saw that the wickedness ofman was great in the earth, and thatevery imagination and intention of allhuman thinking was only evil continually.6And the Lord regretted that He hadmade man on the earth, and He wasgrieved at heart.7So the Lord said, I will destroy, blot out,and wipe away mankind, whom I havecreated from the face of the ground--notonly man, [but] the beasts and thecreeping things and the birds of the air-for it grieves Me and makes Me regretfulthat I have made them.violence (desecration, infringement, outrage, assault, and lust for power).12And God looked upon the worldsaw how degenerate, debased, vicious it was, for all humanitycorrupted their way upon the earthlost their true direction.andandhadand13God said to Noah, I intend to make anend of all flesh, for through men the landis filled with violence; and behold, I willdestroy them and the land.14Make yourself an ark of gopher orcypress wood; make in it rooms (stalls, pens, coops, nests, cages, andcompartments) and cover it inside andout with pitch (bitumen).15And this is the way you are to make it:the length of the ark shall be 300 cubits, its breadth 50 cubits, and its height 30cubits [that is, 450 ft. x 75 ft. x 45 ft.].16But Noah found grace (favor) in theeyes of the Lord. You shall make a roof or window [aplace for light] for the ark and finish it toa cubit [at least 18 inches] above--andthe door of the ark you shall put in theside of it; and you shall make it withlower, second, and third stories.9This is the history of the generations ofNoah. Noah was a just and righteousman, blameless in his [evil] generation;Noah walked [in habitual fellowship] withGod.17For behold, I, even I, will bring a floodof waters upon the earth to destroy andmake putrid all flesh under the heavensin which are the breath and spirit of life;everything that is on the land shall die.10188And Noah became the father of threesons: Shem, Ham, and Japheth.11The earth was depraved and putrid inGod's sight, and the land was filled withBut I will establish My covenant(promise, pledge) with you, and youshall come into the ark--you and yoursons and your wife and your sons' wiveswith you.

19out, and wipe away from the face of theearth. And of every living thing of all flesh[found on land], you shall bring two ofevery sort into the ark, to keep themalive with you; they shall be male andfemale. And Noah didcommanded him.206Of fowls and birds according to theirkinds, of beasts according to their kinds,of every creeping thing of the groundaccording to its kind--two of every sortshall come in with you, that they may bekept alive.21Also take with you every sort of foodthat is eaten, and you shall collect andstore it up, and it shall serve as food foryou and for them.22Noah did this; he did all that Godcommanded him.7AND THE Lord said to Noah, Comewith all your household into the ark, for Ihave seen you to be righteous (uprightand in right standing) before Me in thisgeneration.2Of every clean beast you shall receiveand take with you seven pairs, the maleand his mate, and of beasts that are notclean a pair of each kind, the male andhis mate,3Also of the birds of the air seven pairs, the male and the female, to keep seed[their kind] alive over all the earth orland.4For in seven days I will cause it to rainupon the earth forty days and fortynights, and every living substance andthing that I have made I will destroy, blot5allthattheLordNoah was 600 years old when the floodof waters came upon the earth or land.7And Noah and his sons and his wifeand his sons' wives with him went intothe ark because of the waters of theflood.8Of clean animals and of animals thatare not clean, and of birds and fowls, and of everything that creeps on theground,9There went in two and two with Noahinto the ark, the male and the female, asGod had commanded Noah.10And after the seven days thefloodwaters came upon the earth or land.11In the year 600 of Noah's life, in theseventeenth day of the second month, that same day all the fountains of thegreat deep were broken up and burstforth, and the windows and floodgates ofthe heavens were opened.12And it rained upon the earth forty daysand forty nights.13On the very same day Noah andShem, Ham, and Japheth, the sons ofNoah, and Noah's wife and the threewives of his sons with them, went intothe ark,

14They and every [wild] beast accordingto its kind, all the livestock according totheir kinds, every moving thing thatcreeps on the land according to its kind, and every fowl according to its kind, every winged thing of every sort.15And they went into the ark with Noah, two and two of all flesh in which therewere the breath and spirit of life.1622Everything on the dry land in whosenostrils were the breath and spirit of lifedied.23God destroyed (blotted out) everyliving thing that was upon the face of theearth; man and animals and thecreeping things and the birds of theheavens were destroyed (blotted out)from the land. Only Noah remained alive, and those who were with him in the ark.And they that entered, male andfemale of all flesh, went in as God hadcommanded [Noah]; and the Lord shuthim in and closed [the door] round abouthim. And the waters prevailed [mightily]upon the earth or land 150 days (fivemonths).178AND GOD [earnestly] rememberedThe flood [that is, the downpour ofrain] was forty days upon the earth; andthe waters increased and bore up theark, and it was lifted [high] above theland.18And the waters became mighty andincreased greatly upon the land, and theark went [gently floating] upon thesurface of the waters.19Andthewatersprevailedsoexceedingly and were so mighty uponthe earth that all the high hills under thewhole sky were covered.20[In fact] the waters became fifteencubits higher, as the high hills werecovered.21And all flesh ceased to breathe thatmoved upon the earth--fowls and birds,[tame] animals, [wild] beasts, allswarming and creeping things thatswarm and creep upon the land, and allmankind.24Noah and every living thing and all theanimals that were with him in the ark;and God made a wind blow over theland, and the waters sank down andabated.2Also the fountains of the deep and thewindows of the heavens were closed, the gushing rain from the sky waschecked,3And the waters receded from the landcontinually. At the end of 150 days thewaters had diminished.4On the seventeenth day of the seventhmonth the ark came to rest on themountains of Ararat [in Armenia].5And the waters continued to diminishuntil the tenth month; on the first day ofthe tenth month the tops of the high hillswere seen.

6At the end of [another] forty days Noahopened a window of the ark which hehad madeGo forth from the ark, you and yourwife and your sons and their wives withyou.717And sent forth a raven, which keptgoing to and fro until the waters weredried up from the land.8Then he sent forth a dove to see if thewaters had decreased from the surfaceof the ground.9But the dove found no resting-place onwhich to roost, and she returned to himto the ark, for the waters were [yet] onthe face of the whole land. So he putforth his hand and drew her to him intothe ark.10He waited another seven days andagain sent forth the dove out of the ark.11And the dove came back to him in theevening, and behold, in her mouth wasa newly sprouted and freshly pluckedolive leaf! So Noah knew that the watershad subsided from the land.12Then he waited another seven daysand sent forth the dove, but she did notreturn to him any more.13In the year 601 [of Noah's life], on thefirst day of the first month, the waterswere drying up from the land. And Noahremoved the covering of the ark andlooked, and behold, the surface of theground was drying.16Bring forth every living thing that iswith you of all flesh--birds and beastsand every creeping thing that creeps onthe ground--that they may breedabundantly on the land and be fruitfuland multiply upon the earth.18And Noah went forth, and his wife andhis sons and their wives with him [afterbeing in the ark one year and ten days].19Every beast, every creeping thing, every bird--and whatever moves on theland--went forth by families out of theark.20And Noah built an altar to the Lord andtook of every clean [four-footed] animaland of every clean fowl or bird andoffered burnt offerings on the altar.21When the Lord smelled the pleasingodor [a scent of satisfaction to His heart],the Lord said to Himself, I will neveragain curse the ground because of man,for the imagination (the strong desire) ofman's heart is evil and wicked from hisyouth; neither will I ever again smite anddestroy every living thing, as I havedone.22While the earth remains, seedtime andharvest, cold and heat, summer andwinter, and day and night shall notcease.14And on the twenty-seventh day of thesecond month the land was entirely dry.15And God spoke to Noah, saying,9AND GOD pronounced a blessingupon Noah and his sons and said to

them, Be fruitful and multiply and fill theearth.along with you, as many as came out ofthe ark--every animal of the earth.211And the fear of you and the dread andterror of you shall be upon every beastof the land, every bird of the air, all thatcreeps upon the ground, and upon allthe fish of the sea; they are deliveredinto your hand.I will establish My covenant or pledgewith you: Never again shall all flesh becut off by the waters of a flood; neithershall there ever again be a flood todestroy the earth and make it corrupt.12Every moving thing that lives shall befood for you; and as I gave you thegreen vegetables and plants, I give youeverything. And God said, This is the token of thecovenant (solemn pledge) which I ammaking between Me and you and everyliving creature that is with you, for allfuture generations:4133But you shall not eat flesh with the lifeof it, which is its blood.5And surely for your lifeblood I willrequire an accounting; from every beastI will require it; and from man, fromevery man [who spills another'slifeblood] I will require a reckoning.6Whoever sheds man's blood, by manshall his blood be shed; for in the imageof God He made man.7And you, be fruitful and multiply; bringforth abundantly on the earth andmultiply on it.8Then God sp
