Gestalt meansunified whole.

Gestalt principlesThese theories of visual perceptionwere developed by Germanpsychologists in the 1920s.

Gestalt principlesThese theories attempt to describehow people organize visual elementsinto groups or unified wholes whencertain principles are applied.

Why do we care?Humans are very good at findingpatterns with very little information.Gestalt principles provide a gooddescription of how we do this.Understanding them can improveyour design work.

Gestalt principlesThere are many principles,we will focus on these 5:1. Similarity (and anomaly)2. Continuation3. Closure4. Proximity5. Figure & Ground

1. SimilaritySimilarity occurs when objects looksimilar to one another. People oftenperceive them as a group or pattern.

1. Similarity10 shapes appear as 1 or 2 shapes

1. Similarity10 shapes appear as 1 or 2 shapes

1. Similarity & anomalyWhen similarity occurs, an object canbe emphasized if it is dissimilar tothe others. This is called anomaly.

1. Similarity & anomalyThe dissimilar object is emphasized

2. ContinuationContinuation occurs when the eyemoves through one object andcontinues to another object.

2. ContinuationThe follows motion, connecting shapes

3. ClosureClosure occurs when an objectis incomplete or a space is notcompletely enclosed. If enoughof the shape is indicated, we fill inthe missing infomation.

3. ClosureWe fill in missing information, closing the shapes

3. ClosureWe fill in missing information, closing the shapes

3. ClosureWe fill in missing information, closing the shapes

4. ProximityWhen elements are placed closetogether, they tend to be perceivedas a group.

4. Proximityno proximity no grouping

4. Proximityproximity grouping

4. Proximity at work15 figures are percieved at 1 shape, a tree

5. Figure & GroundThe eye differentiates an object fromits surrounding area.A shape is naturally perceived asfigure (object), while the surroundingarea is perceived as ground(background).

5. Figure & Ground

5. Figure & Groundplaying with figure/ground can give intersting results
