The rooms have doors and cupboardsthat open up into hiding places for the dolls, and each room is finely detailed withstylish furnishings of the era. Later, Du Chaillu remembers howfunny it was when “ Your cousin seemed to be frightened of me. He thought I wasa real cannibal!” The text of the book relates the thrilling adventures and hairraising escapes of the author during his early years of exploring the interior ofequatorial Africa, encountering animals and sights no white man had seen before.Illustrated in black and white throughout the text. In 1860 du Chaillu broughtto the United States the first gorilla ever seen here. He was the first whiteman to bring back information about pygmies in the remote interior of Africa.His stories were so wild that many disbelieved him but he prevailed when hisdiscoveries were verified.
