IntroductionIf a man for whatever reason has theopportunity to lead an extraordinary life, hehas no right to keep it to himself. JACQUES-YVES COUSTEAU Legendaryunderwater explorer and filmmakerIf a man writes a book, let him set downonly what he knows. I have npoet, novelist, playwright, and philosopherThis is not a book of good ideas. This is abook of timeless principles used bysuccessful men and women throughouthistory. I have studied these successprinciples for over 30 years and haveappliedthemtomyownlife.Thephenomenal level of success that I now

enjoy is the result of applying theseprinciples day in and day out since I beganto learn them in 1968.My success includes being the author andeditor of over 60 best-selling books withover 80 million copies in print in 39languages around the world, holding aGuinness Book world record for havingseven books on the May 24, 1998, NewYork Times bestseller list, earning amultimillion-dollar net income every yearfor over the past 10 years, living in abeautiful California estate, appearing onevery major talk show in America (fromOprah to Good Morning America), having aweekly newspaper column read by millionsevery week, commanding speaking fees of 25,000 a talk, speaking to Fortune 500companies all over the world, being the

recipient of numerous professional andcivicawards, havinganoutrageousrelationship with my amazing wife andwonderful children, and having achieved asteadystateofwellness, balance, happiness, and inner peace.I get to socialize with CEOs of Fortune 500companies;movie,television,andrecording stars; celebrated authors; andthe world’s finest spiritual teachers andleaders. I have spoken to the members ofCongress, professional athletes, corporatemanagers, and sales superstars in all of thebest resorts and retreat centers of theworld—from the Four Seasons Resort inNevis in the British West Indies to the finesthotels in Acapulco and Cancun. I get to skiin Idaho, California, and Utah, go rafting inColorado, and hike in the mountains of

California and Washington. And I get tovacation in the world’s best resorts inHawaii,Australia,Thailand,Morocco,France, and Italy. All in all, life is a real kick! And like most of you reading this book, mylife started out in a very average way. Igrew up in Wheeling, West Virginia, wheremy dad worked in a florist’s shop, where hemade 8,000 a year. My mother was analcoholic and my father was a workaholic. Iworked during the summers to make endsmeet (as a lifeguard at a pool and at thesame florist’s shop as my father). I went tocollege on a scholarship and held a jobserving breakfast in one of the dorms topay for books, clothes, and dates. Nobodyhanded me anything on a silver platter.During my last year of graduate school, Ihad a part-time teaching job that paid me

120 every 2 weeks. My rent was 79 amonth, so that left 161 to cover all myother expenses. Toward the end of themonth, I ate what became known as my 21cent dinners—a 10-cent can of tomatopaste, garlic salt, and water over an 11cent bag of spaghetti noodles. I know whatit is like to be scraping by on the bottomrungs of the economic ladder. After graduate school, I started my careeras a high school history teacher in an allblack school on the south side of Chicago. And then I met my mentor, W. ClementStone.Stonewasaself-mademultimillionaire who hired me to work in hisfoundation, where he trained me in thefundamental success principles that I stilloperate from today. My job was to teachthese same principles to others. Over the

years, I have gone on from my time withStone to interview hundreds of successfulpeople—Olympicandprofessionalathletes, celebrated entertainers, bestselling authors, business leaders, politicalleaders, successful entrepreneurs, and topsalespeople. I have read literally thousandsof books (I average one every 2 days),attended hundreds of seminars, andlistened to thousands of hours of atingsuccessandhappiness. I then applied those principlesto my own life. The ones that worked I havetaught in my speeches, seminars, andworkshops to well over 1 million people inall 50 U.S. states and in 20 countriesaround the world.

These principles and techniques have notonly worked for me but they have alsohelped hundreds of thousands of mystudents achieve breakthrough success intheir careers, greater wealth in theirfinances, greater aliveness and joy in theirrelationships, and greater happiness andfulfillment in their lives. My students havestarted successful businesses, becomeself-made millionaires, achieved s, starred in movie and televisionroles, won political offices, had huge impactin their communities, written best-sellingbooks, been named teacher of the year intheir school districts, broken all the salesrecords in their companies, written awardwinning screenplays, become presidents oftheir corporations, been recognized for

theiroutstandingphilanthropiccontributions, created highly successfulrelationships, and raised unusually happyand successful children. The Principles Always Work If You Workthe PrinciplesAll of these same results are also possiblefor you. I know for a fact that you, too, canattain unimagined levels of success. Why?Because the principles and techniquesalways work—all you have to do is putthem to work for you.A few years ago, I was on a television showin Dallas, Texas. I had made the claim thatif people would use the principles I wasteaching, they could double their incomeand double their time off in less than 2years. The woman interviewing me was

highly skeptical. I told her that if she usedthe principles and techniques for 2 yearsand she didn’t double her income anddouble her time off, I would come back onher show and write her a check for 1,000.If they did work, she had to ask me backand tell her viewers the principles hadworked. A short 9 months later, I ran intoher at the National Speakers Associationconvention in Orlando, Florida. She told methat not only had she already doubled herincome but she had also moved to a biggerstation with a substantial pay increase, hadstarted a public speaking career, and hadalready finished and sold a book—all in just9 months! The fact is that anyone can consistentlyproduce these kinds of results on a regularbasis. All you have to do is decide what it

is you want, believe you deserve it, andpractice the success principles in this book. The fundamentals are the same for allpeople and all professions—even if you’recurrently unemployed. It doesn’t matter ifyour goals are to be the top salesperson inyour company, become a leading architect, get all A’s in school, lose weight, buy yourdream home, or become a world-classprofessional athlete, a rock star, an awardwinning journalist, a multimillionaire, or asuccessful entrepreneur—the principlesand strategies are the same. And if youlearn them, assimilate them, and applythem with discipline every day, they willtransform your life beyond your wildestdreams.

“You Can’t Hire Someone Else to DoYour Push-ups for You”As motivational philosopher Jim Rohn hasso aptly put it, “You can’t hire someone elseto do your push-ups for you.” You must dothem yourself if you are to get any value outofthem.Whetheritisexercising, stretching, meditating, reading, studying, learning a new language, creating amastermind group, setting ations, or practicing a new skill, youare going to have to do it. No one else cando these things for you. I will give you theroad map, but you will have to drive the car.I will teach you the principles, but you willhave to apply them. If you choose to put inthe effort, I promise you the rewards will bewell worth it.

How This Book is StructuredTo help you quickly learn these powerfulprinciples, I have organized this book intosix sections. Section I, “The Fundamentalsof Success,” contains 25 chapters that arethe absolute basics you must do to get fromwhere you are to where you want to be.You’ll start by exploring the absolutenecessity of taking 100% responsibility foryour life and your results. From there, you’lllearn how to clarify your life purpose, yourvision, and what you truly want. Next we’lllook at how to create an unshakable beliefin yourself and your dreams. Then I’ll helpyou turn your vision into a set of concretegoals and an action plan for achievingthem. I’ll even teach you how to harnessthe incredible power of affirmations andvisualization—one of the success secrets

of all Olympic athletes, top entrepreneurs, world leaders, and others. The next few chapters have to do withtaking those necessary but sometimesscary action steps that are required tomake your dreams come true. You’ll learnto ask for what you want, reject rejection, solicit and respond to feedback, andpersevere in the face of what nII,“TransformYourselfforSuccess,” addresses the important innerwork you’ll need to do—work that will helpyou remove any mental and emotionalblocks you may have to success. It’s notenough to know what to do. There aremany books that will tell you that. You also

need to understand the importance of andthemethodologyforremovingself-defeating beliefs, fears, and habits that areholding you back. Like driving your car withthe emergency brake on, these blocks cansignificantly slow your progress. You mustlearn how to release the brakes, or you willalways experience life as a struggle and fallshort of your intended goals. What will youlearn in Section II? You’ll learn how tosurround yourself with successful peopleand how to acknowledge the positive pastand release the negative past, face whatisn’t working in your life, embrace change, and make a commitment to lifelonglearning. We’ll look at how to clean up anyphysical and emotional messes you havecreated and complete all the “incompletes”in your life robbing you of valuable energy

thatcouldbebetterusedintheachievement of your goals. I’ll also teachyou how to transform your inner critic intoan inner coach and develop valuablesuccess habits that will change your lifeforever.Section III, “Build Your Success Team,”reveals how and why to build different kindsof support teams so you can spend yourtime focusing exclusively on your coregenius. You’ll also learn how to redefinetime, find a personal coach, and accessyour own inner wisdom—an untapped butultrarich resource for most s,” I’ll teach you a number ofprinciples, as well as some very practicaltechniques, for building and maintaining

successful relationships. In this day ofstrategic alliances and power networks, it’sliterally impossible to build large-scale,long-lasting success without world-classrelationship skills. Finally, because so many people equatesuccess with money, and because moneyis vital to our survival and the quality of ourlife, Section V is entitled “Success andMoney.” I’ll teach you how to develop amore positive money consciousness, howto ensure that you have plenty of money tolive the lifestyle you want, both now andafter you retire, and the importance oftithing and service in guaranteeing yourfinancial success.Section VI, “Success Starts Now,” consistsof two short chapters on the importance of

getting started now and empowering othersin the process. Reading these chapters willjump-start you in creating the life you’vealways dreamed of but up until now maynot have fully known how to create. How to Read This BookBelieve nothing. No matter where you readit, or who said it, even if I have said it,unless it agrees with your own reason andyour own common sense. - BUDDHAEveryone learnsdifferently, and youprobably know how you learn best. Andthough there are many ways that you canread this book, I’d like to make a fewsuggestions that may be helpful. You may want to read this book throughonce just to get a feel for the total process

before you start the work of creating the lifeyoutrulywant,Theprinciplesarepresented in an order that builds one uponthe other. They are like the numbers in acombinationlock—youneedallthenumbers, and you need them in the rightorder. It doesn’t matter what color, race, gender, or age you are. If you know thecombination, the lock has to open for you.As you are reading, I strongly encourageyou to underline and highlight everythingthat feels important to you. Make notes inthe margin about the things you’ll put intoaction. Then review those notes andhighlighted sections again and again.Repetition is the key to real learning. Everytime you reread portions of this book, you’llliterally “re-mind” yourself of what you needto do to get from where you are to where

you want to be. As you’ll discover, it takesrepetitive exposure to a new idea before itbecomes a natural part of your way ofthinking and being. You may also discover that you’re alreadyfamiliar with some of the principles here. That’s great! But ask yourself, Am Icurrently practicing them? If not, make acommitment to put them into action—now!Remember, the principles only work if youwork the principles. The second time you read through thisbook, you’ll want to read one chapter at atime, then take whatever time necessary toput it into practice. If you’re already doingsome of these things, keep doing them. Ifnot, start now.

Like many of my past students and clients, you, too, may find yourself resisting takingsome of the suggested action steps. Butmy experience has shown that the onesyou most resist are the ones you need tomost embrace. Remember, reading thisbook is not the same as doing the work, any more than reading a book on weightloss is the same as actually eating fewercalories and exercising more. You might find it useful to connect with oneor two other people who would like to joinyou as accountability partners and ensurethat each of you actually implements whatyou learn. True learning only occurs whenyouassimilateandapplythenewinformation—when there is a change inyour behavior.

A WarningOf course, any change requires sustainedeffort to overcome years’ worth of internaland external resistance. Initially you mayfind yourself getting very excited about allthis new information. You may feel anewfound sense of hope and enthusiasmfor the new vision of your life as it can be.This is good. But be forewarned that youmay also begin to experience other feelingsas well. You may feel frustration at notknowing about all of this earlier, anger atyour parents and teachers for not teachingyou these important concepts at home andat school, or anger at yourself for havingalready learned many of these things andnot having acted on them.

Just take a deep breath and realize that thisis all part of the process of your journey.Everything in the past has actually beenperfect. Everything in your past has led youto this transformative moment in time.Everyone—includingyou—hasalwaysdone the best they could with what theyknew at the time. Now you are about toknowmore.Celebrateyournewawareness! It is about to set you free. You may also find that there will be timeswhen you wonder, Why isn’t all of thisworking faster? Why haven’t I alreadyachieved my goal? Why aren’t I richalready? Why don’t I have the man orwoman of my dreams by now? When am Igoing to achieve my ideal weight? Successtakes time, effort, perseverance, andpatience. If you apply all of the principles

and techniques covered in this book youwill achieve your goals. You will realizeyour dreams. But it won’t happen overnight. It’s natural in the achievement of any goalto come upon obstacles, to feel temporarilystuck on a plateau. This is normal. Anyonewho has ever played a musical instrument, participated in a sport, or practiced amartial art knows that you hit plateauswhere it seems as if you are making noprogress whatsoever. That’s when theuninitiated often quit, give up, drop out, ortake up another instrument or sport. But thewise have discovered if they just keeppracticing their instrument, sport, or martialart (or, in your case, the success principlesin this book), eventually they make whatfeels like a sudden leap to a higher level ofproficiency. Be patient. Hang in there. Don’t

give up. You will break through. Theprinciples always work.Okay, let’s get started. It’s time to start living the life you’veimagined. - HENRY JAMES Americanborn author of 20 novels, 112 stories, and12 plays

Principle 1: Take 100% Responsibility forYour LifeYou must take personal responsibility. Youcannot change the circumstances, theseasons, or the wind, but you can changeyourself. - JIM ROHN America’s foremostbusiness philosopherOne of the most pervasive myths in theAmerican culture today is that we areentitled to a great life—that somehow, somewhere, someone (certainly not us) excitingwithcareeroptions, nurturing family time, and blissfulpersonal relationships simply because weexist. But the real truth—and the one lesson thiswhole book is based on—is that there is

only one person responsible for the qualityof the life you live. That person is you.If you want to be successful, you have totake 100% responsibility for everything thatyou experience in your life. This includesthe level of your achievements, the resultsyouproduce, thequalityofyourrelationships, the state of your health andphysical fitness, your income, your debts, your feelings—everything! This is not easy.In fact, most of us have been conditionedto blame something outside of ourselvesfor the parts of our life we don’t like. Weblame our parents, our bosses, our friends, the media, our coworkers, our clients, our

spouse, the weather, the economy, ourastrological chart, our lack of money—anyone or anything we can pin the blameon. We never want to look at where the realproblem is—ourselves. There is a wonderful story told about a manwho is out walking one night and comesupon another man down on his kneeslooking for something under a streetlamp. The passerby inquires as to what the otherman is looking for. He answers that he islooking for his lost key. The passerby offersto help and gets down on his knees andhelps him search for the key. After an hourof fruitless searching, he says, “We’velooked everywhere for it and we haven’tfound it. Are you sure that you lost it here?”

The other man replies, “No, I lost it in myhouse, but there is more light out hereunder the streetlamp.”It is time to stop looking outside yourself forthe answers to why you haven’t created thelife and results you want, for it is you whocreates the quality of the life you lead andthe results you produce. You—no one else!To achieve major success in life—toachieve those thingsthatare mostimportant to you—you must assume 100%responsibility for your life. Nothing less willdo. One Hundred Percent Responsibility forEverything

As I mentioned in the introduction, back in1969—only 1 year out of graduate school—I had the good fortune to work for W.Clement Stone. He was a self-mademultimillionaire worth 600 million at thetime—and that was long before all the dotcom millionaires came along in the ’90s.Stone was also America’s premier successguru. He was the publisher of SuccessMagazine, author of The Success SystemThat Never Fails, and coauthor withNapoleon Hill of Success Through aPositive Mental Attitude. When I was completing my first week’sorientation, Mr. Stone asked me if I took100% responsibility for my life.“I think so,” I responded.

“This is a yes or no question, young man.You either do or you don’t.” “Well, I guessI’m not sure.”“Have you ever blamed anyone for anycircumstance in your life? Have you evercomplained about anything?”“Uh yeah I guess I have.” “Don’t guess.Think.”“Yes, I have.”“Okay, then. That means you don’t takeone hundred percent responsibility for yourlife.Takingonehundredpercentresponsibility means you acknowledge thatyou create everything that happens to you.It means you understand that you are thecause of all of your experience. If you wantto be really successful, and I know you do,

then you will have to give up blaming andcomplaining and take total responsibility foryour life—that means all your results, bothyour successes and your failures. That isthe prerequisite for creating a life ofsuccess. It is only by acknowledging thatyou have created everything up until nowthat you can take charge of creating thefuture you want.“You see, Jack, if you realize that you havecreated your current conditions, then youcan uncreate them and recreate them atwill. Do you understand that?”“Yes, sir, I do.”“Are you willing to take one hundredpercent responsibility for your life?” “Yes,sir, I am!”

And I did.You Have to Give up All Your ExcusesNinety-nine percent of all failures comefrom people who have a habit of makingexcuses.-GEORGEWASHINGTONCARVER Chemist who discovered over325 uses for the peanutIf you want to create the life of your dreams, then you are going to have to take 100%responsibility for your life as well. Thatmeans giving up all your excuses, all yourvictim stories, all the reasons why you can’tand why you haven’t up until now, and allyour blaming of outside circumstances. You have to give them all up forever. You have to take the position that you havealways had the power to make it different,

to get it right, to produce the desired result. For whatever reason—ignorance, lack ofawareness, fear, needing to be right, theneed to feel safe—you chose not toexercise that power. Who knows why? Itdoesn’t matter. The past is the past. All thatmatters now is that from this point forwardyou choose—that’s right, it’s a choice—youchoose to act as if (that’s all that’srequired—to act as if) you are 100%responsible for everything that does ordoesn’t happen to you.If something doesn’t turn out as planned, you will ask yourself, “How did I createthat? What was I thinking? What were mybeliefs? What did I say or not say? Whatdid I do or not do to create that result? Howdid I get the other person to act that way?

What do I need to do differently next timeto get the result I want?”A few years after I met Mr. Stone, Dr.Robert Resnick, a psychotherapist in LosAngeles, taught me a very simple but veryimportant formula that made this idea of100% responsibility even clearer to me.The formula is:E R O(Event Response Outcome)The basic idea is that every outcome youexperience in life (whether it is success orfailure, wealth or poverty, health or illness, intimacyorestrangement, joyorfrustration) is the result of how you haveresponded to an earlier event or events inyour life.

If you don’t like the outcomes you arecurrently getting, there are two basicchoices yo

principles for creating success and happiness. I then applied those principles to my own life. The ones that worked I have taught in my speeches, seminars, and workshops to well over 1 million people in
