WHY READ THE BIBLEWhat you have in your hands right now is a supernatural book. The words of thisbook—the Bible—are not merely human words. Instead, these are God’s ownwords, His own personal revelation of Himself to us. Here in the Bible we encounterGod and come to know His amazing love for us.It is no wonder that the Bible is as relevant today as when it first was written. It is themost popular book in human history, and through the centuries millions have riskedtheir lives to have their own Bible. Only a supernatural book could survive the countless attempts to destroy it.The Bible is a unique book. It actually includes 66 different books—some short, some long—written over a period of 1,500 years. It was written by more than 40 people from all walks of life and in three different languages. But the Bible is especiallyunique in that the words of each book were inspired or “breathed out” by God (2 Timothy 3:16). Taken together, the books of the Bible are “the sacred writings, which areable to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus” (2 Timothy 3:15).The Bible’s great message is the revelation of Jesus Christ and His work of savingus. The Bible begins in the book of Genesis by telling how God created everything, including human beings, and how sin and death first came into the world to spoilGod’s perfect creation. But then the Bible unfolds God’s wonderful plan to give eternal life to all who believe in Jesus. Hundreds of years before Jesus was born the Biblepredicts His birth. The Bible then goes on to tell the amazing story of Jesus’ life anddeath and resurrection—and that Jesus will return one day in the future, to take allwho believe in Him to be with Him forever in heaven.Though the Bible is all one book, it is divided into two main parts. The first partis the Old Testament, which was written initially to God’s chosen nation, the Jewishpeople, through whom God would bring His Son Jesus into the world. The New Testament was written initially to those who first believed in Jesus in the first-centurychurch. But the message of both the Old and the New Testaments is timeless and asrelevant today as ever—for every race and culture and for every generation downthrough history.Best of all, you can discover the life-giving message of the Bible for yourself. GenesisThe Creation of the WorldIn the beginning, God created the heavens and theearth. 2 The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God washovering over the face of the waters.3 And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.4 And God saw that the light was good. And God separatedthe light from the darkness. 5 God called the light Day, andthe darkness he called Night. And there was evening andthere was morning, the first day.6 And God said, “Let there be an expanse1 in the midst ofthe waters, and let it separate the waters from the waters.”7 And God made2 the expanse and separated the waters thatwere under the expanse from the waters that were abovethe expanse. And it was so. 8 And God called the expanseHeaven.3 And there was evening and there was morning, the second day.9 And God said, “Let the waters under the heavens begathered together into one place, and let the dry landappear.” And it was so. 10 God called the dry land Earth,4and the waters that were gathered together he called Seas. And God saw that it was good.11 And God said, “Let the earth sprout vegetation,plants5 yielding seed, and fruit trees bearing fruit in whichis their seed, each according to its kind, on the earth.” And itwas so. 12 The earth brought forth vegetation, plants yielding seed according to their own kinds, and trees bearingfruit in which is their seed, each according to its kind. AndGod saw that it was good. 13 And there was evening andthere was morning, the third day.14 And God said, “Let there be lights in the expanse ofthe heavens to separate the day from the night. And letthem be for signs and for seasons,6 and for days and years,15 and let them be lights in the expanse of the heavens togive light upon the earth.” And it was so. 16 And God madethe two great lights—the greater light to rule the day andthe lesser light to rule the night—and the stars. 17 And Godset them in the expanse of the heavens to give light on theearth, 18 to rule over the day and over the night, and to separate the light from the darkness. And God saw that it wasgood. 19 And there was evening and there was morning, thefourth day.20 And God said, “Let the waters swarm with swarmsof living creatures, and let birds7 fly above the earth acrossthe expanse of the heavens.” 21 So God created the great seacreatures and every living creature that moves, with whichthe waters swarm, according to their kinds, and everywinged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it wasgood. 22 And God blessed them, saying, “Be fruitful andmultiply and fill the waters in the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth.” 23 And there was evening and there wasmorning, the fifth day.24 And God said, “Let the earth bring forth living creatures according to their kinds—livestock and creepingthings and beasts of the earth according to their kinds.”And it was so. 25 And God made the beasts of the earthaccording to their kinds and the livestock according to1their kinds, and everything that creeps on the groundaccording to its kind. And God saw that it was good.26 Then God said, “Let us make man8 in our image, afterour likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish ofthe sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thingthat creeps on the earth.”27 So God created man in his own image,in the image of God he created him;male and female he created them.28 And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Befruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, andhave dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birdsof the heavens and over every living thing that moves onthe earth.” 29 And God said, “Behold, I have given you everyplant yielding seed that is on the face of all the earth, andevery tree with seed in its fruit. You shall have them forfood. 30 And to every beast of the earth and to every birdof the heavens and to everything that creeps on the earth, everything that has the breath of life, I have given everygreen plant for food.” And it was so. 31 And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good. Andthere was evening and there was morning, the sixth day.The Seventh Day, God RestsThus the heavens and the earth were finished, andall the host of them. 2 And on the seventh day Godfinished his work that he had done, and he rested on theseventh day from all his work that he had done. 3 So Godblessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it Godrested from all his work that he had done in creation.2The Creation of Man and Woman4 These are the generationsof the heavens and the earth when they were created,in the day that the Lord God made the earth and theheavens.5 When no bush of the field9 was yet in the land10 and nosmall plant of the field had yet sprung up—for the LordGod had not caused it to rain on the land, and there was noman to work the ground, 6 and a mist11 was going up fromthe land and was watering the whole face of the ground—7 then the Lord God formed the man of dust from theground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature. 8 And the Lord Godplanted a garden in Eden, in the east, and there he put theman whom he had formed. 9 And out of the ground theLord God made to spring up every tree that is pleasantto the sight and good for food. The tree of life was in themidst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of goodand evil.10 A river flowed out of Eden to water the garden, andthere it divided and became four rivers. 11 The name ofthe first is the Pishon. It is the one that flowed around thewhole land of Havilah, where there is gold. 12 And the goldof that land is good; bdellium and onyx stone are there.13 The name of the second river is the Gihon. And the fourth river is the Euphrates.15 The Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and keep it. 16 And the Lord Godcommanded the man, saying, “You may surely eat of everytree of the garden, 17 but of the tree of the knowledge ofgood and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat1of it you shall surely die.”18 Then the Lord God said, “It is not good that the manshould be alone; I will make him a helper fit for2 him.”19 Now out of the ground the Lord God had formed3 everybeast of the field and every bird of the heavens and broughtthem to the man to see what he would call them. And whatever the man called every living creature, that was its name.20 The man gave names to all livestock and to the birds ofthe heavens and to every beast of the field. But for Adam4there was not found a helper fit for him. 21 So the Lord Godcaused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and while he slepttook one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh. 22 Andthe rib that the Lord God had taken from the man hemade5 into a woman and brought her to the man. 23 Thenthe man said,14 The Lord God said to the serpent,“ Because you have done this, cursed are you above all livestockand above all beasts of the field;on your belly you shall go,and dust you shall eatall the days of your life.15 I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring11 and her offspring;he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.”16 To the woman he said,“ I will surely multiply your pain in childbearing;in pain you shall bring forth children.Your desire shall be for12 your husband, and he shall rule over you.”17 And to Adam he said,“ Because you have listened to the voice of your wifeand have eaten of the treeof which I commanded you,‘ You shall not eat of it,’“ This at last is bone of my bonescursed is the ground because of you;and flesh of my flesh;in pain you shall eat of it all the days of your life;she shall be called Woman,18 thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you;6because she was taken out of Man.”and you shall eat the plants of the field.19 By the sweat of your face24 Therefore a man shall leave his father and his motherand hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. you shall eat bread,25 And the man and his wife were both naked and were nottill you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken;ashamed.for you are dust,The Falland to dust you shall return.”Now the s
