RAVING REVIEW FROM AUSTRALASIANDENTIST MAGAZINE ABOUT BOSSCATEGORYEVENTSBOSS Orthodontics coursereceives high praiseDentists are raving about anorthodontics seminar recently hostedin Sydney and Melbourne by highlyawarded and widely published researcherand specialist orthodontist, Dr VandanaKatyal.The BOSS course (Best OrthodonticSeminars & Sessions) is one in a seriesof ‘how to’ courses in understanding andpractising orthodontics in the dentalsetting, designed to up-skill dentistswanting to provide basic orthodontictreatments for their patients.At the outset Dr Katyal set outto provide unbiased information onappropriate and sound interventions,using on evidence-based advice and not topromote particular techniques.She is concerned at the trend wheresome orthodontic product manufacturersoverseas are providing ‘clinical’ training inorthodontics to promote their products todentists.“There is also talk of ‘DIYorthodontics’ in the United States wherepatients ‘self diagnose’ and treat theirown orthodontic conditions by buyingappliances online without a professionaldiagnosis or treatment plan – in the sameway they could buy a potentially harmfulteeth whitening product for home use inAustralia,” Dr Katyal said.Dr Katyal has devised the BOSS seriesto ‘pay forward’ the tremendous insightsshe was afforded by orthodontics anddental professionals during her researchstudies, and to help mentor those wantingto increase their knowledge and experiencein orthodontics.The BOSS course includes detailedclinicalcasepresentationsfromspecialists, hands-on practical sessionson bonding and installing orthodonticappliances and outlines how to performappropriate interventions depending onthe complexity of the case, chances ofsuccessful outcomes and the long-termbest interests of the patients.Importantly, the BOSS course alsoalerts dentists how to identify and refer oncomplex cases to orthodontists and otherdental professionals, and is also up-front inshowing what can go wrong in orthodonticinterventions.Other specialists in the area of endodontics, prosthodontics and paediatricdentistry joined Dr Katyal during thetwo-day courses to share their insightsof paediatric cases, growth prediction,malocclusion, dental trauma and the latest in oral appliances.Course participants were full ofpraise for the excellent balance of indepth theoretical and practical sessions,including the detailed clinical case studiespresented by Dr Katyal and the guestspeakers, Dr Mehdi Rahimi, Dr Jad Clarkeand Dr Mark Johnstone.A notable aspect of the BOSS coursecompared to other types of ContinuingProfessional Development (CPD) seminarswas the small group size, which allowedplenty of one-on-one attention and alsoenabled questions to be answered andinformation to be tailored to individuals.Course participants said they foundthe information very easy to absorb andthat it gave them confidence to apply whatthey learned during the course in theirown dental settings afterwards.While it enjoys some sponsorshipsupport, another significant aspect ofthe BOSS course is that is not directlyaligned with ny dental suppliers anddoes not actively promote a particularbrand of equipment, type of treatment ororthodontic appliance.NSW south coast dentist, Dr WenChao Liu, said he found the input by DrKatyal and the experiences shared bythe specialist speakers very valuable andrelevant to his work.“I found Vandana’s ‘helpful tips andtricks’ that she has accumulated duringher years of work particularly useful andVandana also offered ongoing support andmentoring and is generally very quick inanswering follow-up enquiries.“A variety of techniques werepresented, including ones not commonlypracticed in Australia. I have already putinto daily practice some of the techniquesthat were taught to us.”Dr Liu added that the course has givenhim increased confidence in presenting histreatment plan to patients: “I’ve learned toindividualise treatments to each patientto achieve an outcome that is in the bestinterest of the patient.”Dr Liu also appreciated the fact thatthe course was not openly promotinga particular product like others he hadattended. “Although there were sponsors,no specific supplier or product was everpushed on us during the course and wedidn’t only see ‘perfect’ outcomes in everycase, but some of the actual challenges youface performing orthodontic treatments,”Dr Liu said.Sydney dentist, Dr Allison Chiu fromErskine Park Dental in Western Sydney,agreed, saying some of the things shelearned had either reinforced or challengedher previous beliefs.“I have been practicing orthodonticsin my GP practice for over three years nowand found the specialists’ presentationsand practical sessions particularly usefuland very relevant to every day practice.“For example, the ‘photo taking’workshop is not just good for orthodontics,but for general documentation.
