Page 2, Section 1THE SILSBEE BEE www.silsbeebee.comWednesday, December 11, 2013College football season still churns with rumorsWednesday, Dec. 18Sunday, Dec. 22Tuesday, Dec. 24350 Hwy 96 Swww.fbcsilsbee.org385-2819Looking to Sell Your CarLET USBUY ITCall Silsbee Motor Company409-385-0409Time really does fly whenyou are having a good time.Well, if you are an Auburnor Florida State fan, it reallyflies. It has been quite a season inthe college football ranks, andwith only bowl games remaining, I already miss it with apassion. This year, there were someamazing games that make thissport one of the best watchedlevels of football.Probably one of the bestwas Auburn’s win over Alabama that set up the NationalChampionship between theTigers and Florida State. The disappointing aspect ofthe game this year was thepoor play by Big 12 teams thatgave up chances at being atthe top. When it was once one of theelite conferences in the nationseems to be playing secondfiddle to the ACC now.Baylor seemed to be the topteam before falling to Oklahoma State. But just like thegreat game of college football, the Cowboys fall to its in-staterival OU.It was a crazy year in theBig 12 this year, that endedwith Baylor and Texas playingfor the title.Yes, the same Texas teamthat started the season 1-2 including a horrific loss toBYU. Just like the announcerssaid in Saturday’s game, “whoAround TheWriter’s BlockBy Daniel Elizondowould of thunk that Texaswould be playing for thetitle?”Thanks to OU defeatingOkie State, the Longhornswere in position to save theseason for Mack Brown. While Mack’s job wasbeing studied under the microscope after two bad lossesearly in the season, thingschanged quickly when thecoach fired his defensive coordinator. Texas slowlyworked its way back to the topof the standings in the Big 12including a win over rival OU.The bottom line is that nowMack’s job is back on the line. The reasoning is because heshould have beaten Baylor.Seems a lot will argue thatTexas came back and made itsway into the title hunt, but amediocre record and headinginto the Fiesta Bowl wouldnot have been a good mix forthe Horns. But after seeing who Baylorwill be playing doesn’t makefor a big-time bowl, sorryCentral Florida fans. That mayhave been Mack’s savior.awin over Baylor and a winover UCF.As the season was fallingapart for Texas, then rumorsstarted circulating of NickSaban entering Austin to takeover.Sounds far-fetched, butwhen Saban once promised hewould never leave MiamiDolphins, two days later hedoes a press conference inTuscaloosa. The rumors may have dieddown some in Texas’ recentwins, but after the loss to Baylor, it turns out a radio stationin Austin reports from a reliable source that Saban closedon purchasing a house inLakeway near Austin. This isn’t a sure sign thatSaban is coming to Texas, butif it is true, it kind of seemsodd that this would happen atthis time of year.Saban is reportedly close toa long-term deal with Alabama. And reporters have interviewed his wife, who saysthey are extremely happy inTuscaloosa and don’t plan onever leaving. There is no doubt that Texasneeds change, to help bolsterits recruiting and not lose investors.Mack is a good man forTexas and has been for a longtime. But in recent years, itseems his stock is declining. He is witty and possessesthat charm that a politician canonly possess.I recently read a reporter forthe San Antonio ExpressNews and Houston Chroniclesay he saw an older lady nextto DKR and ask for directionsto the nearest post office. When one patron couldn’thelp her, she went up to anolder man with shorts. Hesmiled and pointed her to theright place. This reportertweeted that she said “thankyou kind man,” and he proceeded to say that she had noidea it was Mack Brown. That’s just the kind of manhe is.I remember being at a localestablishment in Austin having a grand time when someone in front of me just aboutfainted and told me “MackBrown is standing behindyou.”Being the silly person I am,I didn’t believe him andturned around saying “whatever” out loud. Lo and behold, there was Mack smiling at meface to face with his hand outready to shake.Of course my mouth waswide open in dismay. I justshook his hand and he tells meits good to meet me. I nevertold him my name.I know he is good for Texas, but times are changing. And ifit were a perfect world, hewould stay in some capacity atthe university. But in reality, tosave a tradition rich footballprogram – it’s time for achange.Spears joins Lumberton City CouncilBy: Andrea Whitneyreporter@silsbeebee.comLumberton resident SharonSpears had no idea when shesent a letter to Mayor DonSuratt offering to volunteerher services that she would beembarking on a journey as thenewest Lumberton City Council member.Spears, born and raised inTRY OURSANDWICH PLATTERSOR GIANT SUBS FORHOLIDAY PARTIES ANDWe’ll Give You ADozen Subway Cookies FREELumberton, came here withher mother and father, Loisand Thomas Jeffcoat in 1947after the war, to watch themfulfill the family's dream ofowning a business. The family settled in Lumberton and soon built a successful business in JeffcoatFeed and Hardware whileraising their family in the tightknit community of what wasthen called Chance-Loeb.Spears recalls attending elementary school in at ChanceLoeb school, where she madefriends she would keep forlife. In 1955, her parents builttheir first home on Highway96, and Spears saw just howclose her community was aspeople from the entire city, which would become Lumberton, joined together in agathering to celebrate the family's good fortune."Lumberton is just a veryclose knit community. I amproud to have helped pass itbecause it provides SoutheastTexans the assurance that theycan celebrate Christmas andother cherished holidays atschool as they would anywhere else.”Specifically, the law provides that: A school district may educate students about the historyof traditional winter celebrations, and allow students anddistrict staff to offer traditionalgreetings regarding the celebrations, including "MerryChristmas,""HappyHanukkah," and "happy holidays."
