IgnitorsGeneral informationabout Tridonic ignitorsMetal halide lamps and sodium vapourlamps which do not have an internal starterneed a high ignition voltage in order to start.Depending on the type of lamp in question, an ignitionvoltage of 800 V to 8,000 V is needed in order to start acold lamp. The ignitors used to achieve this are dividedinto two basic groups depending on the circuit principlechosen, namely superimposed-pulse ignitors and ignitorsystems that use pulse technology.Cable lengths to lampThe height of the ignition pulse diminishes as it travelsfrom the ignitor towards the lamp as the length of thecable or the capacitance of the cable increases. It is vitalto adhere to the ignition voltage range in order to reliablystart a lamp throughout its service life.Superimposed-pulse ignitors and pulse ignitorsThe special feature of superimposed-pulse ignitors is thatthe ignition voltage is generated without placing a highvoltage load on the choke. Superimposed-pulse technology leads to a reproducible ignition response which doesnot depend on the control gear used and is unaffected byvoltage fluctuations.Ignition behaviourReliable ignition depends on the following factors:Number of ignition pulsesHeight and width of ignition pulsePhase displacement of ignition pulsesAdequate supply voltagePulse ignitors are operated with chokes tailored specifically for them. Integrated shutdown of defective lampsreduces the load on the chokes to a minimum. Restartattempts in pulse-pause mode reduce the load on thechokes still further in the case of C201 type ignitors.Ignitor rangeThe innovative range of ignitors from Tridonic includesstandard ignitors suitable for all commercially availablehigh-intensity discharge lamps with wattages from 35 W to3,500 W. The appropriate ignitor is chosen primarily basedon the lamp manufacturer’s specifications.10The ignition voltage is limited by the lampholder, lampsocket and lamp specification.Ignition voltageThe ignition voltage is equivalent to the amplitude of therelevant ignition pulse. Depending on the lamp and ignitor, the ignition voltage varies from 800 V to 5,000 V.Ignition energyThe energy of an ignition pulse is proportional to the surface area of the envelope of the ignition pulse. The highignition energy of Tridonic ignitors improves the restrikingperformance of hot lamps.

Switch-on voltage and switch-off voltageTridonic ignitors ensure lamps start reliably even if themains voltage is as low as 198 V (switch-on voltage). Theignitor is switched off as soon as the lamp starts to prevent damage to the lamp. Because of high-quality narrowtolerance components, the switch-off voltage reaches thehigh value of 185 V.Minimal increase in temperatureThe increase in temperature in the ignitor determines itsarea of application and is therefore an important criterion.Tridonic ignitors are characterised by minimal self-heating,which in turn gives luminaire designers extra creativefreedom.Superimpsed-pulse ignitors of wave power (resolution 2 ms/div)Typ:ZRM 6-ES/CVG 400 WUN 198VACV/div 1kVT/div 2msMost Tridonic ignitors are designed for a maximum housing temperature (tc point) of 105 C which must not beexceeded in service.f At a glance:Mains voltage range:220 V -10% to 240 V 10%Mains frequency: 50/60 HzSafety according to EN 61347-2-1Operating principle according to EN 60927Electronic, silent operationCompact designHigh reliabilityMinimum intrinsic consumptionLow self-heatingWear-free and maintenance-freeHigher ignition energyEasy to install11

Superimposed-pulse ignitorsStandard superimposed-pulse ignitorsA compact designed circuit is used to controlthe ignition process. This means that superimposed-pulse ignitors from Tridonic are characterised by high system reliability.Superimposed-pulse ignitorsIn ignitors that operate on the superimposed principle, the ignition voltage is generated by an integrated pulsetransformer. This transforms the mains voltage to theignition voltage of up to 5 kVp required by the lamp. The ignition voltage is superimposed on the mainsvoltage. This results in a defined number of ignitionpulses having a predetermined width and height –as required by lamp manufacturers – per half wave. The lamp current flows through the pulse transformer. The ignition voltage is produced by discharging a capacitor across the pulse transformer. A cleverly designedcircuit is used to control the ignition process. This meansthat superimposed-pulse ignitors from Tridonic havehigh system reliability and reproducibility of the ignitionpulses, which are largely unaffected by fluctuations inthe mains voltage.100 % compliance with the tolerance limits of the ignition pulseis guaranteed because ignitioncharacteristics do not depend onexternal components. Furthermore, the high voltage is appliedexclusively to the ignitor and lightsource without placing a highvoltage load on the choke. Thisextends the choke’s service lifeconsiderably.12Ideally, a superimposed-pulse ignitor is fitted in the luminaire. The distance to the lamp is limited to 1.5 m max.to ensure reliable lamp starting and therefore maximumflexibility when installing luminaires.Tridonic superimposed-pulse ignitors are available asZRM ES/C type standard ignitors without a timer, as ZRMES/CT versions with an integrated digital timer, pulsepause ignition mode and automatic reset.

Superimposed-pulse ignitorsSuperimposed-pulse ignitors with a digital timerThe lamp has time to cool down in the pausesafter ignition.Lamps go out and are started again – this cycle repeatsuntil the lamp is replaced. These down-times are associated with a significant safety risk that is made worse bythe fact that it is difficult to localise faulty lamps.Digital ignitor with an integrated timerThe ZRM ES/CT superimposed-pulse ignitor with an integrated digital timer and pulse-pause ignition solves thisproblem. As soon as annoying flickering starts to occur, the timer automatically stops the ignition process.Pulse-pause ignitionInstead of constantly sending ignition pulses to a lamp until it starts, the ignitor generates pulses in a patented twopart rhythm, thus creating optimum conditions for startingsodium vapour lamps and metal halide lamps.ZRM 4,5 ES/CTThe lamp has time to cool down in the pauses after ignition. This leads to much faster restarts for hot lamps. Thanks to pulse-pause admission, actual ignition times account for only 10% of the total ignition time. This reducesthe downtime of the system by 90%.Standard ignitor ignition sequenceZRM ES/CT ignition sequence in pulse-pause mode16

High-precision lamp managementthanks to microcontrollerThe microcontroller chip in the integrated timer of superimposed-pulse ignitors digitally controls the logic for ignition and automatic shutdown. An automatic reset functionis also integrated. This reset function is needed for lightingsystems that operate 24 hours a day (tunnels, factories).f At a glance:High-quality lighting solutionsNo annoying flickeringNo interference with radio and TV reception, computer displays, air traffic control, alarm systemsReduced expenditure on maintenance work17

Pulse ignitorsIgnitor systems using pulse technologyCompared with superimposed-pulse ignitors,in pulse ignitors the high-voltage pulse isproduced in conjunction with the choke. To achieve this, the ignitor uses a separate tap on thechoke, specially developed for pulse technology and designed for high ignition voltages. Because the high-voltagepulse for the ignition process is generated in the choke itis possible to achieve very high ignition energy. Nevertheless, in the case of systems that use conventional pulsetechnology, the output voltage is highly dependent onthe mains voltage and this reduces the permissible cablelength – depending on the cable capacitance.ZRM powerPULSE added-value systemTridonic’s ZRM powerPULSE digital system compensatesfor this effect. As with systems that use conventional pulsetechnology, the choke is included in the system. But amicroprocessor in the actual ignitor generates the ignitionpulse. This ensures on the one hand that the choke and luminairewiring are not overloaded if there is a mains overvoltage. On the other hand, it also ensures that in the event of amains undervoltage, or if there are extremely long connecting cables, the required ignition energy is constantlyavailable.Digital convenienceThe benefits of pulse-pause technology are evident inthe ZRM powerPULSE ignitor as this ignitor reduces therestart time by up to 50% and EMC interference in theignition phase by up to 90% (see Figure 1)Photo: Sill GmbH20

In applications suchas greenhouse lighting, the ZRM 4000/400 powerPULSEmodel is a particularly attractive alternative because of itssilent operation and the long cable lengths that it makespossible.ZRM powerPULSE also offers several flexible fixing options. The robust M8 aluminium bolt is suitable for bothstandard installation as well as lateral fixing. The highquality screw terminal is designed for flexible cables aswell as for rigid wires – up to 2 x 1.5 mm2 per pole.0Another feature of the digital timer is its integrated threestart counter, which stops the ignition process after threeunsuccessful lamp starts to suppress lamp cycling whenthe lamp comes to the end of its life, and avoids overloading the control gear with the high-voltage pulses.Ignition time in sMechanically versatileWith dimensions of just 37.5 mm x 76.5 mm x 31.6 mm,the plastic housing with IP30 protection is compact.
