DEDICATIONI dedicate this commentary to my children Johannah and Elizabeth and write this note tothem, their children, their children’s children and all their family members to come.Over the last 35 years I have noticed an expanding segment of the visible church that claimsto speak for Christ, yet reflects little of the doctrines or discipleship we see in Scripture.Granted, we all fail daily in one way or another, yet our heart and desire should be to liveunto Christ in all things. We learn how to do this only from knowing and applying the truthsin God’s infallible Word, the Bible. It is hoped that this commentary (merely the words of avery fallible man) will serve as an aid in your study of God’s Word. During your life you willencounter many religious fads, movements, organizations, etc., with some even callingthemselves “Christian,” but they will prove not to be. My only concern for you is youreternal soul. My aim with this commentary is to provide you with an outline from my yearsof studying the Bible so that, “ no one takes you captive through philosophy and emptydeception, according to the tradition of men, according to the elementary principles of theworld, rather than according to Christ.” Colossians 2:8.Remember fathers and mothers (especially fathers) you have a duty before God to teach andtrain your children the truths of God (Deuteronomy 6:5–7). Do not delegate thisresponsibility to the church youth group or Sunday school. The church is there tosupplement what you are already doing at home. Failure to fulfill your duty will result inpain for yourself and tragedy for generations to come.“ and there arose another generation after them who did not know the Lord, noryet the work which He had done for Israel. 11 Then the sons of Israel did evil in thesight of the Lord ” Judges 2:10–11It is my sincere desire that all your family members will come to be part of the true church bybeing born again, which includes possessing a saving knowledge of Christ [to know moreabout what that means, read the entire comments section for Matt. 5:17-20]. It is my hope thatyou and your family will be serving God in your home, church, vocation and around theworld via missions. My motivation for writing this commentary and my prayer for you issummed up in my favorite verse:“Beloved, while I was making every effort to write you about our commonsalvation, I felt the necessity to write to you appealing that you contend earnestlyfor the faith which was once for all handed down to the saints.” Jude v.3Remember, the second after you die, nothing else will matter but the King and His Kingdom.Live that truth now!May the grace and peace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you all.Love,Dad 3

PREFACEThis commentary is committed to Biblical Christianity. That is, a commitment to Biblicalinerrancy, and salvation based solely on God’s grace through faith in Jesus Christ’ssacrificial death on the cross as the sole payment of a person’s sin. A general list of thefundamentals of Biblical Christianity is set forth after this Preface. This commentary is designed to be used in many different ways. Do not let its lengthoverwhelm you. It was not created to be read like an ordinary book, but is a verse byverse study of the Gospel of Matthew that is divided into small sections. This methodallows the reader to study and reflect on a section (or a part of a section) and then returnthe next day to do the same for the succeeding section. Each section contains a Summaryand Application to help the reader consider how to take the truth of God’s Word and liveit out. This format lends itself to work well for personal or family devotions, preaching,as well as teaching a group Bible study or Sunday school. The commentary also has aTopical Index. Finally, it is important that you check out the footnotes/endnotes as youread. Many footnotes/endnotes may simply mention a source, but a considerablenumber contain in-depth information and commentary.Let me explain the various applications in a little more detail. As you thumb through thecommentary, you will note that the text of the Gospel of Matthew is divided up intosmaller sections of the text. A group of sections constitutes an entire lesson. The end of alesson will have a portion called Summary and Application. An entire lesson wouldrepresent something taught in a Sunday school or group Bible Study.1.Family or Personal Devotions: Each day the family or an individual can studythrough the Book of Matthew by examining a selection of verses. For example,Dad can take a few minutes beforehand and read the verses and comments hewill teach from that day. Since he has reviewed the text, he can decide how topresent the lesson in a manner that all the family members can learn something, regardless of age. (Remember that you are daily sharing from just a few versesand not an entire lesson so aim for about 10-15 minutes.)In addition to teaching from the main text from Matthew, the commentary willhave other supporting Bible verses that family members can look up and read.Since Dad has already studied that section, he can explain the Scriptures andthen spur on a discussion by asking family members various questions about theverses and how they can apply the lesson to their lives. The family devotionscan come to a close by asking family members what they would like to prayabout. This becomes a great opportunity to stop and hear what is going on ineveryone’s life and heart. Conclude by having some prayer time together, taking turns so that each person in the family prays. If you do this, you will seea family unit that is greatly strengthened as it grows in God’s Word and praysfor each other’s needs. 4

A couple of last thoughts. If you are shaking your head and thinking thereis no way you could get everyone together for 15 minutes each day, thenyou must recognize that your family is out-of-control. Understand that yourchildren’s spiritual lives are being sacrificed by their endless activities andyour obsession with work and money. One last word of caution, do not waituntil your children are “old enough” to understand the Bible lessons. Sarahand I started having a little family devotion time right away when webrought our first child home from the hospital. I knew that if I did not startthat habit right away, it would never happen. Also, it is amazing how evenyoung children pick up on spiritual lessons that I would have consideredway above them. Proverbs 22:6 tells us to:“Train up a child in the way he should go,even when he is old he will not depart from it.”2.Bible study or Sunday school: As mentioned above, the text of the Gospelof Matthew is divided up into sections of Scripture verses. A group ofsections constitutes a complete lesson. The end of a lesson will have aportion called Summary and Application. You can teach an entire lesson ateach meeting. Another option is for each member of the group to possesstheir own copy of the lesson. They can then spend the week reviewing thelesson on their own and then get together as a group to discuss it.3.Topical Index: This section allows you to look up a particular Bible topicsaddressed in the commentary. The e-book version should allow you to clickon the topic or other verses in that Topic Index and go directly to the text.Remember that your chief objective is to walk in the truth of God’s Word whichwill manifest itself in Holy Spirit born fruit.“But prove yourselves doers of the word, and not merely hearers who delude themselves.” James 1:22God’s blessings as you study His Word!John M. Strohman - (Jude v.3)P.S. Other Issues: 1) Some issues/concepts are repeated throughout the commentary. The reason is that these issues reoccur in the Gospel of Matthew. Further, theirrepetition serves as an aid to learning via reinforcement. 2) Note that I have chosennot to belabor the reader with gender issues like (he or she) in my comments. Thereasonable reader will recognize that when I use terms like “mankind” it alsoincludes women. 3) If there is a matter you disagree with, feel free to contact me.Please understand that I will ultimately be persuaded only by Scripture in context (2Tim. 2:15) and not simply by personal experience, denominational doctrine, orpolitical agenda. A GENERAL OUTLINE OF FUNDAMENTAL DOCTRINES OF CHRISTIANITYTrue fundamental doctrines are derived from Scripture alone and do not originate from religioustradition or ecclesiastical groups/counsels. Oswald Chambers stated:“We are apt to forget that a man is not only committed to Jesus Christ forsalvation; he is committed to Jesus Christ’s view of God, of the world, of sin andof the devil, and this will mean that he must recognize the responsibility of beingtransformed by the renewing of his mind.” 1A mature Christian is committed to the Bible to formulate their theological beliefs. From the study ofScripture, one will affirm the doctrines below. The list below forms a general outline of trueChristianity: 2 Inspiration, Inerrancy and Authority of Scripture: Christ is the Word of God incarnate:John 1:1,14, 2 Peter 1:20-21, 2 Timothy 3:16, Proverbs 30:5-6, Revelation 22:18-19. Virgin Birth: Matthew 1:18-25, Luke 1:34-35, John 1:14,. The Deity of Jesus Christ The Son of God: He is God incarnate (God in a human flesh-andblood body) Colossians 2:9, 1 John 5:20, Titus 2:13-14, John 8:58 and 10:30, Mark 14:61-62,John 20:28, Mark 15:39, John 21:14, Luke 22:70, John 20:31. Jesus’ Humanity: (His incarnation) 1 John 4:2-3, He was tempted (Luke 4:1-13), hungry(Matthew 4:2), thirsty (John 19:28), slept (Matthew 8:24), died (Mark 15:39-45, Matthew27:50). Jesus’ Sinlessness: 2 Corinthians 5:21, Hebrews 4:15, 1 Peter 2:22, 1 John 3:5. The Trinity: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. There is one God who eternally exists in threepersons. Each possesses the same nature and attributes but is distinct in office and activity:Deuteronomy 6:4, Matthew 28:19, John 10:30, John 17:21, John 10:38, 1 John 2:20-24, Jesus isthe Son of God and Savior (John 20:31). Jesus - Worker of Miracles, All Powerful and Creator of All Things: John 11:32-45,Matthew 12:22, Luke 7:21-23, Matthew 15:30-31, Mark 9:23, 10:27, Luke 1:37, 18:27; Creator ofall things, John 1:3, John 1:10, 1 Corinthians 8:6, Revelation 4:11, Genesis 1:1, Colossians 1:1517, Hebrews 1:2. Human Depravity: Each person is morally corrupt and sinful which is the condition of beingspiritually dead toward God: Romans 3:23, Ephesians 2:1-3, Ecclesiastes 7:20, Romans 5:12,Psalms 14:1-3, Romans 3:20, Psalms 143:2, Psalm 51:5. Christ’s Atoning Death and Bodily Resurrection: Christ died on the cross as asubstitutionary sacrifice for sinners: 1 Peter 3:18, 2 Corinthians 5:21, 1 Corinthians 15:1-7,Titus 2:13-14, Romans 5:12-21, Hebrews 2:14, John 11:25-27, John 4:25-26, 1 John 2:1-2, John21:14.[CONTINTUED ON THE NEXT PAGE]Chambers, O. A Person is Saved from Eternal Damnation by God’s Grace Through Faith in Jesus Christand His Sacrificial Payment for Sin by His Death on The Cross (and nothing else): One isnot saved by works of righteousness, being a good person, or attempted obedience to theLaw: Ephesians 2:8-10, Galatians 2:16 - 3:8, Romans 4:4-5, Romans 3:27-31, 5:11-21, Acts10:43, Titus 2:13-14, John 3:15-18.The Lordship of Christ: Romans 10:9: “that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, andbelieve in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved;” John 13:13: “You callMe Teacher and Lord; and you are right, for so I am.” See also Philippians 2:8-11, 1 Corinthians16:22-23, Romans 14:9, Acts 16:31, 1 Corinthians 12:3, Acts 2:21 and 36, Acts 1:21, Matthew12:8, Matthew 22:37, Isaiah 45:23, Romans 14:11.The Return of Christ: Second Coming: John 14:1-3, Matthew 26:64, Luke 12:40, Matthew24:27 and 42-51, Mark 14:62, John 21:21-23. Mark 13:26.The Eternal Damnation in Hell for the Unsaved: John 15:6, Revelation 20:10-15, Revelation21:8, John 3:18, 1 Corinthians 6:9-11, 2 Thessalonians 1:8-9, John 5:22, Mark 9:43-48,.Eternal Reign Of Christ in Heaven and Eternal Life for those He Redeemed: John 14:1-3,Matthew 19:28-29, Matthew 25:46, John 3:15-16, Revelation 4:5-11, 1 John 5:20, Jude v.21, 1Peter 4:11, 1 John 1:2-4, Titus 2:13-14.WHAT MUST ONE BELIEVE TO BE SAVED FROM ETERNAL JUDGMENT?Jesus states in the Bible that every single person is guilty of sin, which is punished by receiving eternaljudgment in the fires of hell. Jesus preached that the only way to escape from hell is to “repent and believe inthe gospel.” Mark 1:15. To REPENT means to turn from your sins and forsake them by the power of God. To BELIEVE THE GOSPEL means that one who is “born again” by the Spirit of God (John 3:3-8) will: Believe in Jesus Christ as Almighty God, who is without sin; Believe in Jesus’ sacrificial death on the cross as the only and complete payment for your sins; Believe in Jesus’ bodily resurrection from the dead on the third day; Believe in Jesus as Lord over all things and confesses this fact to others. It is that straightforward. It has nothing to do with your righteousness, good works or engaging in areligious ceremony or cleaning yourself up first to win God’s acceptance. If you reject God’s loving gift offorgiveness in Jesus Christ, you remain a guilty sinner waiting to be punished in eternal hell. The Biblesays in John 3:36: “He who believes in the Son has eternal life; but he who does not obey the Son will notsee life, but the wrath of God abides on him.” Repent and believe the gospel TODAY, before it is too late!* Fundamental doctrines are those that are essential to one making a claim to true Biblical Christianity. What arethe fundamentals of the faith? Most restrict the list of fundamental doctrines to those that relate to the issue ofsalvation alone (soteriological—the theological doctrine of salvation in Christianity). “Historically, fundamentalism has been used to identify one holding to the five fundamentals of the faith adopted by theGeneral Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A. in 1910. The five fundamentals were the miracles ofChrist, the virgin birth of Christ, the substitutionary atonement of Christ, the bodily resurrection of Christ, andthe inspiration of Scripture. Fundamentalism has stood for the historic fundamentals of Christianity, particularlyas developed in The Fundamentals. These were initially issued as twelve booklets edited by R. A. Torrey and A. C.Dixon.” Enns, P. P. (1997, c1989).” The Moody Handbook of Theology (613). Chicago, Ill.: Moody Press. The reasonfor limiting it to the doctrine of salvation is due to the awesome and wonderful simplicity to becoming a trueChristian! Romans 10:9 “ that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart thatGod raised Him from the dead, you will be saved;. ” 7
