THIRTY-FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIMEPAGE 3Father Joe’s NotesMy dear friends,Well, I’m back! After a week-long driving trip and aweek-long stay with my parents, I ought to be restedand refreshed enough to get back into the routine.(We will see how that goes, because I’m writing thisas I have just parked my car and started to unpackand sort laundry. One of the oddities of bulletins isalways writing it a week or two in advance.) Nowthat I’ve faced the pile of mail and messages(hopefully!), it’s time to get back to work. While the weekend andHalloween are here, myfocus is on what comesnext. Monday is AllSaints’ Day, and we havea normal Mass schedulefor that. (In thepeculiarities of the Churchcalendar, it is not a day ofobligation this year.) I ammostly concerned with theschedule for Tuesday, AllSouls’ Day. On that day,we remember and honorall those who have died. We entrust them to the careof a merciful God. We pray they find the peace andjoy of the Resurrection in Christ. That is where mymind is now.Tuesday evening, we will have a special Mass at St.Dominic Church. We will pray for all of ourbeloved deceased, but especially those parishionersof Immaculate Conception, St. Thomas, and St.Dominic parishes who have died in the past year.Their names will be read during the prayers. Thereis something powerful about the liturgy. While griefis so often a private and personal thing, this Massallows us share our experience. We gather withothers facing the death of aspouse, child, parent, familymember, or friend. We see thatwe are not alone in what we haveexperienced. As they all pray forthe person or persons for whom Imourn, I pray for the person of persons close totheir hearts. There is a powerful connection andmoment of comfort we share. I hope many of youcan join us for this special service. All Souls’ Day is one of myfavorite celebrations of theChurch Calendar. Themoment is powerful. Thereis a great connection to thosewe entrust to the Lord. Thereis a real connection to thosewho gather I to share the painand grief they experience. Itis a moment where we are abit more removed from themoment of death to hearagain the message of theResurrection given at thefuneral service. We are reminded that Jesus Christcame to call us and save us, opening wide the gatesof Paradise. We hear that no one is lost, gone, orforgotten, but that all live eternally with God. Thepeople we love and loved us are always present inthat love of Christ we share. The Spirit unites uswith them and each other in a powerful way. AllSouls’ Day brings hope and joy into our lives. It’sa wonderful day.All donations will be listed in the bulletin for the date ofrequest if received in time, though, depending on the liturgicalseason/date, flowers may not be present on the altar. Please pick up a donation envelope at an usher’s position in the backof the church. Fill it out and drop it in the collection basket with yourdonation. Two weeks notice please. Thank you.Hopefully yours in Christ, Fr. PAGE 6ask fatherOCTOBER 31, 2021†Question: Father, was St. Mary Magdalene aprostitute?Answer: No. The idea that she was, comes from badscholarship. What we know of her is that she was afollower of Jesus and he had cast out seven demons fromher (Luke 8:2). She is often confused with Mary ofBethany, who anoints Jesus feet and dries them with herhair (John 12:3), and a saint known as Mary of Egypt, arepentant prostitute who lived three and half centuries afterMary Magdalene. We do know that Jesus ate and spokewith sinners, tax collectors, and prostitutes, so we wouldexpect to be told if she were a repentant prostitute. TheBible never tells us this. Some construe it from details thatshe had demons driven out of her and that she had money.Where would a woman get money in that day and age?Well, the title “Magdalene” may answer that. Magdalawas a major fishing town on the Sea of Galilee thatgenerated great wealth for the nation. (Most of Herod theTetrarchs wealth came from here, also explaining howJoanna, the wife of Herod’s steward Chuza, also came tofollow Jesus.) She is from this town, and may havecontrolled fishing vessels there. This would have put herin contact with fishermen, like Peter and Andrew, whodidn’t have vessels of their own. That would have broughther into the center of the group around Jesus. What we doknow is that she was a follower of Christ who helped fundhis public ministry and the work of his disciples. She waspresent at the Crucifixion and the Resurrection. She wasthe first messenger of the Lord rising, and so earns her thetitle of Apostle to the Apostles. That we know for certain. The idea that she was a prostitute is just bad storytelling.do you knit, sew, or crochet?Volunteers are needed tocraft Baptism bibs andblankets for theSouthington CatholicParishes of ImmaculateConception, St. Dominic, and St. Thomas. In Baptism, children areclothed with a White Garment to symbolizetheir newborn purity and dignity. We are inparticular need of persons withsewing skills. Parents are also gifted a babyblanket to remind them of their child’s Baptism.Volunteers will be provided support andguidance to help them get started.
