Chesspuzzle solving introduces students to the study ofchess in a format that can be easily implementedin A school programs and district meets.Section 1416:CHESS PUZZLE(a)(b)32REPRESENTATION.(1) Contestants. Students in second,third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventhand eight grades who are eligibleunder sections 1400 and 1405may enter this contest.(2) Divisions. This contest will consistof three divisions: (2nd and 3rd),(4th and 5th), (6th, 7th and 8th).With the approval of the districtexecutive committee, a districtmay have separate divisions foreach grade.(3) Individual Competition. For eachdivision, each participant schoolmay enter as many as three contestants in the district meet.(4) Team Competition. If the district haselected to include team competition, the combined scores of thethree contestants in each divisionfrom a school shall constitute theschool’s team score. A team shallhave three contestants competeto participate in team competition.NATURE OF THE CONTEST.(1) Summary. The study of chessteaches analytical thinking, patternrecognition and creativity, whichin turn improve student performance in reading, writing, history,geography, and math.(2) Contest Format. Students will takea 30-minute objective test containing approximately 20 chesspuzzles, plus a separate tiebreak-(c)er section. Answer formats mayinclude fill-in-the-blank, multiplechoice and/or true/false.(3) Test. The league will make available sets of test questions, onetest for each division for invitational meets, one test for eachdivision for fall/winter districtmeets, and one test for each division for spring district meets.CONTEST ADMINISTRATION.(1) Personnel. All personnel in thecontest may be coaches of participating students.(A) ContestDirector. Thecontest director will bein charge of running thecontest and resolving anyproblems that arise. Thedirector may appoint anassistant director.(B) Timekeeper. The contestdirector will serve as official timekeeper and willgive only a start and stopsignal. A clock should bevisible to all contestants.(C) Graders. At least three graders should be familiar withthe instructions for gradingand contest rules. The contest director may recruitmore than three graders.(2) Time. For all divisions, contestants will be given 30 minutes

(d)(e)to answer all test questions andan additional five minutes for thetiebreaker section.(3) Materials.(A) Provided by UIL. Copies of test,answer key and answer sheet.(B) Provided by the School or Student. Pens or pencils.(C) Other. No other materials ornotes may be used in the contest.CONDUCTING THE CONTEST.(1) Numbering of Contestants. Distributea copy of the test and answer sheetto each contestant. Instructing themnot to open test until the start signal is given. As roll is called, instructstudents to write their assignednumber in the space provided ontheir answer sheets.(2) Clear Room. Contestants and coaches should be informed of the timeand place of the verification period.Coaches who are not assigned aspecific duty in administering thecontest should be dismissed fromthe contest room before the contest begins.(3) Testing. Inform contestants thatanswers must be recorded on theanswer sheets according to theinstructions given. Contestants maywrite or mark on the puzzle sheet.Contestants should remain in theirseats throughout the testing period.When the 30-minute contest period has ended, give the stop signaland ask all contestants to put theirpens/pencils down. Collect all testand answer sheets, and distribute atiebreaker section and answer sheetto each contestant.(4) Tiebreaker. When tiebreaker testpapers and answer sheets have beendistributed, instruct contestants torecord all answers on the answersheet. Give the signal to start. Whenthe five-minute tiebreaker periodhas ended, give the stop signal andask all contestants to put their pens/pencils down. Collect all tiebreakertest papers and answer sheets.GRADING.(1) Briefing Graders. Brief graders on theprocedure to be used for gradingand explain scoring process.(2)(f)(g)(h)Criteria. The test is graded objectively.(3) Scoring. Each test shall be scoredaccording to the grading instructions provided. Each test should beindependently scored twice, andpapers contending to place shouldbe scored a third time.(4) Ties. For all contestants involvedin a tie, grade the five-minute tiebreaker section according to thegrading instructions provided. Inindividual competition, if two ormore contestants tie, the contestant with the best tiebreaker scorereceives the higher place. In teamcompetition, if two or more teamstie, the team with the best combined tiebreaker score for all teammembers wins the tiebreaker andreceives the higher place. If twoor more individuals or teams haveboth the same objective score andthe same tiebreaker score, the tiestands and will not be broken. Ifthere is a tie for first place, thereis no second place. If there is a tiefor second place, there is no thirdplace, etc.(5) Points. Points are awarded throughsixth place.Team points are awardedthrough third place. See Section1408 (i). Tied contestants or teamssplit the total points equally for thetwo or more places in which the tieexists.VERIFICATION PERIOD. The contestdirector should designate a time andplace for a 15-minute verification periodat which time contestants and/or coaches are given the opportunity to viewtheir test papers with official answerkeys. Unofficial results should be posted.Questions should be directed to thecontest director, whose decision will befinal.OFFICIAL RESULTS. After the verification period has ended and all test papershave been collected, the contest directorshall announce the official results. Officialresults, once announced, are final.RETURNING MATERIALS. No materials from the fall/winter district contestmay be returned to contestants beforeJanuary 31.
