STATIC EXHIBITS GENERAL RULES1. Static Exhibits Entry Form and W-9 are found in the Women’s, Horticulture, andArts/Education Building Static Exhibit Premium Books. Forms may also be downloaded atsdstatefair.com.2. The South Dakota State Fair office will accept Static Exhibits Entry Form and W-9 betweenApril 3-July 31 in all departments except Literature which closes July 17. Mail completedforms to the South Dakota State Fair.3. Exhibitor must complete the Static Exhibits Entry Form and W-9 with name, full address, andsocial security number. Exhibitor’s name on Static Exhibits Entry Form and W-9 must be thesame. Remember to include entry fee. A 30 service fee will be charged if check is returnedfor insufficient funds. Phone entries will not be accepted.4. REFUND POLICY: The fair may refund entry fees paid by an exhibitor if the exhibitorrequests the refund in writing two weeks prior to the opening day of the fair and states thereason for requesting the refund. Following that timeframe, NO refunds will be issued.5. Exhibitor must complete a separate Static Exhibits Entry Form for each department. Onlyone entry may be made in each class unless stated otherwise in rules for that division/class.6. The entry must be exhibited in the name of the person doing the work and completed sincethe last South Dakota State Fair between September 8, 2020 and September 1, 2021.7. Youth is defined as 18 years of age and under prior to the 2021 State Fair. Youth may alsoenter in adult categories. Exhibits will be judged according to rules of the division.8. Computerized entry tags will be mailed to exhibitors. Tags should not be altered. Exhibitshaving altered tags will not be accepted and will be disqualified.9.For exhibit check-in and release information, refer to Women’s, Horticulture, andArts/Education Building Static Exhibit Premium Books. There will be no early releases. Noexhibits will be released without claim tag.10. Entries may be mailed to the South Dakota State Fair. Entries must be securely wrappedand boxed to prevent damage. Exhibitor is responsible for insurance. Entry tag must beattached to exhibit with a copy of Static Exhibit Entry Form to serve as packing slip and forcheck-in purposes. Draw a line through any item on the entry form not included with mailedexhibits. Entries must be received by the South Dakota State Fair office by August 21, 2021,to qualify for judging.11. The South Dakota State Fair is not responsible for any loss or damage that may occur.12. Exhibits may not be sold. Sales tags or advertising logos on exhibits will not be allowed.13. Superintendents of the Women’s, Horticulture, and Arts/Education Buildings may determinethe eligibility of exhibits and may disqualify exhibits.14. A division or class may be deleted if no entries are made for three years.15. Exhibits not claimed will be shipped Cash on Delivery (COD) to exhibitor unlessarrangements are made with the building superintendent. Items not claimed and not suitablefor mailing become property of the South Dakota State Fair.16. Premium checks will be paid within 90 days after the State Fair. Premium checks are void ifnot cashed within 180 days after issue date.17. No person employed in a department may be an exhibitor in that department.5

DEPARTMENT 371: ARTGeneral Rules: Entries are qualified for competition in Department 371 ART when the following rulesare met.1. Refer to the SD State Fair Static Exhibits General Rules.2. Entries must be made in the name of the person doing the work and can only be enteredone time at the SD State Fair.3. Artist need not be a resident of South Dakota.4. Entries in the Art Department will close July 31. Artists may submit up to four entries in eachclass.1. Jr. Youth Entry Fee - 2.00 per item2. Youth Entry Fee - 2.00 per item3. Amateur Entry Fee - 4.00 per item or three for 10.004. Professional Entry Fee - 8.00 per item or three for 155. Check-in area is marked off. Only commercial vendors and authorized workers are allowedin the check-in area prior to judging. Please allow ample time for entering exhibits.6. Exhibits in Art will be received: Friday, August 20, 10 AM to 6 PM Saturday, August 21, 9 AM to 4 PMART EXHIBIT GUIDELINES7. Attach entry tag string to the back of the entry so the tag will hang over the upper left-handcorner of the artwork. This applies to all classes except sculpture. Tags should not bealtered.8. Works of art should be crated to insure safe delivery. Artwork should be protected withadequate packing material to avoid damage.9. All entries must be properly prepared for judging and with adequate weight wire to ensuresafe hanging. Sawtooth hangers are prohibited.10. There is no size limit.11. Artwork should be suitable for family viewing. The building superintendent reserves the rightnot to display or judge any artwork which is deemed not to be appropriate.12. Definitions Jr. Youth: 11 years of age or younger prior to start of fair. Youth: 12-18 years of age or younger prior to the start of the fair. Amateur: Creates art for the pleasure involved and does not derive the majority ofincome directly from art. Has had little or no art training. Professional: Creates art for the purpose of selling; or who has had three or more yearsof art school training or teaches in the art media. Derives the majority of income frombeing an artist.13. Judges will consider the following: Creative composition Mastering of techniques Technical standards of the medium Total creative work of the artist14. Art/Education superintendent and assistants will safeguard art entries. However, the SouthDakota State Fair is not responsible for loss or damage that may occur. Insurance onartwork is the responsibility of the exhibitor.15. Art exhibits may be picked up on Tuesday, September 7 from 9 AM to 5 PM and Saturday,September 11 9 AM to 12 PM. Exhibitor must have claim check to remove exhibit from theArt/Education Building. If personally unable to pick-up exhibit, exhibitor must sign a releaseauthorizing an individual to pick-up exhibit. Exhibitors who cannot pickup their exhibit shouldmake arrangements and supply postage to have artwork returned by mail. SPIRIT OF DAKOTA AWARDStatement of Purpose & CriteriaThe Spirit of Dakota Award is an annual honor bestowed each fall by the Spirit of Dakota Award Societyat a state-wide event in Huron, South Dakota. The Spirit of Dakota award is given to: An outstanding South Dakota woman who has demonstrated leadership qualities and has beensuccessful and admired in her community and state. Women with roots deep in South Dakota whose courage and strength of character have helpeddevelop her family and community. A woman who has represented social, cultural, and education advancement for others. This award is not Mother of the Year, or Teacher of the Year, nor categorized but ratherrecognition of those outstanding women who have been the symbols of all that we are proud of inour Prairie Women. The nominee does not need to be a native of South Dakota, but must be a current, living residentof the state.The Spirit of Dakota Art Show is held in conjunction with the Spirit of Dakota Award Celebration &Banquet slated for the first Saturday of October at the Huron Event Center. First place winners in the Artand Photography Divisions may have the opportunity to have their winning entries chosen for display atthe art show.
