Teddy Roosevelt-Teddy Roosevelt was President WilliamMcKinley’s Vice-President representing theRepublican Party.-Prior to this, he was governor of New York andpolitical bosses hated him because he cleanedup corruption and pursued Progressive tactics.-Many in New York that were corrupt wantedhim to be Vice-President, just to get him out ofNew York and into a position that, supposedly,had no power.

The McKinley Assassination-President William McKinley was assassinated by ananarchist, Leon Frank Czolgosz, in Buffalo, NewYork. McKinley was shot on September 6th,1901and died days later.-Czolgosz was an anarchist who opposed thestructure of the USA government and claimedMcKinley mainly benefited the wealthy and bigbusinesses.-Teddy Roosevelt became President as a result. Thisangered many big business leaders who did not likeTR’s Progressive tactics.

Spain’s Original TerritorialClaims Around the World

By 1898, Spain’s territorial claims had shrunkdramatically. Many in the USA did not like that Spaincontrolled Cuba and Puerto Rico, areas close to themainland of America.

Spain controlledCuba as a territory in1898. ManyAmericans did notlike that a Europeanpower wascontrolling an areaso close themainland of the USA.

The Spanish American War-The Spanish American War occurred in1898.The USA wanted Spain to give Cubaindependence.-America was hesitant to use force to assistCuba, until the USS Maine was supposedly“attacked” by Spain.-The USS Maine was sunk, nobody knows how,but Spain was blamed. After this, the USAdeclared war against Spain and began to useforce to help Cuba gain independence.

The USS Mainewas sunk nearCuba. Manyspeculated itwas an accident;yet, the USAblamed Spainand declared waragainst themdue to thisincident.

TR and the Spanish American War-The Rough Riders group was a horse cavalry led byTeddy Roosevelt and they fought in the SpanishAmerican War in Cuba. Before TR was ever President,he was a war hero from this conflict.-The Rough Riders won the famous Battle at SanJuan Hill in Cuba. This made TR famous as the leaderof the group.-The USA won the war and gained the Philippines,Guam, and Puerto Rico. Many felt this wasinconsistent of America because the USA wanted Cubato gain independence, but took other territories fromSpain.

After the Spanish American War, America gainedThe Philippines, Guam, and Puerto Rico fromSpain. This contributed to the USA becoming animperial power.

Progressivism and TR-TR claimed the federal government wasresponsible for the national welfare.-He radically opposed the principles ofSocial Darwinism.-TR claimed the government shouldmonitor and even remove monopoliesfrom the economy for the common good.

Social Darwinism

TR’s Square Deal-TR wanted laws to ensure the economyworked in a way to benefit the working class.He asserted all Americans deserved a squaredeal.-TR felt many big businesses were pursuingeconomic tactics that damaged the workingclass’ ability to make a living wage.-Monopolization and other tactics meant thewealthiest were increasing their riches, whilethe lower classes were making less money.

In this political cartoon,TR is depicted as a liontamer. The lions havedifferent trust names,such as the beef trustand oil trust on theirbacks and are walkingout of Wall Street.This cartoon shows howTR attacked bigbusiness monopolies.

The Trustbuster-The Sherman Anti-trust Act was supposed tostop monopolies from forming, but it was notenforced well.-Teddy Roosevelt began to enforce the act tobreak up monopolies. In 1902, the justicedepartment sued the Northern SecuritiesCompany for being a railroad monopoly.-In 1904, the company was broken up and theSupreme Court ruled the justice department’slaw suit was Constitutional.
