CLUB UPDATESLETTER FROM THE ADVISORY BOARD CHAIR CHRIS SHEEI am humbled by the opportunity toserve as Chairman of the Advisory Board forthe Construction Management Departmentat the University of North Florida for the2018-2019 school year. It’s hard to believethat 19 years ago, I was about to head intomy last semester at UNF having no ideathat my path would lead me into a careerin homebuilding nor would I ever dream ofbeing involved in this capacity with the University. It’s been a great honor to serve asa member of the Advisory Board and evenmore so as Chairman.Six years ago I was asked to serve on theboard by a fellow homebuilder, Glenn Layton, and one of our trade partners, DavidHacker. I knew nothing about the role;however, I knew if these two guys whom Ihave utmost respect for had their hearts init, then so should I. I quickly accepted theopportunity with the main goal of helping students absorb many of the lessons Ilearned “growing up” in the industry andbeing a mentor to any student that genuinely wanted / needed one.My first year was spent trying to figureout the role of the Board. The second yearI became Chair of the Student CompetitionCommittee. In helping prepare the studentsfor the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) competition, their passion tolearn about our business and industry wasvery intriguing. I realized that I could helpthese students start their careers with a morewell-rounded foundation of knowledge thatI wasn’t privy to in hopes that they wouldbe better business women and men for theircompanies. Having worked with every teamover the past 5 years, I know that all of thosestudents have a “leg up” compared to mostof their classmates because of the hard workthey put into the competitions. It’s a badgeof honor I will always be able to wear knowing that I was able to make a small difference in their education. I’m so thankful forGlenn and David reaching out to me andgetting me involved with such a great groupof students and industry leaders. The advisory board serves many differentroles from industry integration, curriculumreview, outcome assessments, and leadingand/or supporting the student competitions. We are also always looking for guestlecturers for various topics depending onthe curriculum for the semester. If you haveany interest in serving on the Board, being aguest lecturer, bringing students to a jobsite,or any other piece of Time, Treasure, or Talent you’re able to offer, please let us know byemailing Marc Kaiser at marc.kaiser@unf.edu. It’s very rewarding to get involved andI know you’ll find the same. SWOOP!CHRIS SHEEUNF CMAB CHAIRWOMEN IN CONSTRUCTIONWomen In Construction (WIC) has been very active inthe 2019 spring semester.
