ISBN:9781337619370Catalog Description:Examines abnormal behavior with emphasis on anxiety disorders, affective disorders and schizophrenia. Includes the biological andpsychological bases of mental disorder and psychological factors involved in the diagnosis and treatment of mental disorders. Theclass will visit various mental health/corrections centers throughout the semester. These experiences have brought students intocontact with real mental health problems. They have afforded an opportunity to interact with professional mentalhealth/corrections personnel. Prerequisite: Psychology 121.Credit Hour Policy Statement:This class meets the federal credit hour policy of 1 hour of class with an expected 2 hours of additional student work outside of classeach week for approximately 15 weeks for each hour of credit, or a total of 45-75 total hours for each credit.Course Learning Objectives:At the conclusion of the semester, students will: have gained factual knowledge and learn fundamental principles, generalizations, and theories regarding diagnostic criteria,research findings, and treatments for mental disorders;have learned to apply course material to improve thinking, problem solving, and decisions;have a better understanding of his/her own behavior and emotions;be able to communicate, in writing and in discussion, more effectively and creatively;be able to think more critically and creatively.Methods of Instructions:The primary methods of instruction in this class include lecture, instructor-led class discussion and student readings. Classparticipation will be monitored daily due to the important role that your presence has in the class. You are expected to bring youropinions to the class and interact respectfully with the material presented.

Withdrawal and Attendance policies:Harlaxton College expects regular class attendance by all students. Students are considered sufficiently mature to appreciate thenecessity of regular and punctual attendance, to accept this personal responsibility and to accept the consequences of failure toattend. When absences occur due to emergency or medical reasons, students are expected to notify their instructors of the absenceprior to class or to seek the assistance of the College nurse or a member of the Student Support Team for help in notifyinginstructors.Instructors have the authority to grant excused absences for medical, psychological, or personal reasons upon review of appropriatedocumentation and professional recommendation supporting such a request.The Principal has the authority to grant excused absences for medical, psychological, or personal reasons.Each instructor is expected to maintain an attendance policy in keeping with the nature of the Harlaxton program, and may considerit in evaluating performance in their courses.Policy Governing Unexcused Absences:Harlaxton College operates an attendance policy that is binding on all faculty and students. The number of unexcused absences thatare allowed before incurring a penalty is related to the number of times a class meets each week. For courses meeting twice a weektwo such absences are permitted. Additional unexcused absences will attract a grade penalty. This will be determined by the coursemember and included in their syllabus (e.g. a full-letter grade (A to B), or a third-letter grade (A- to B ).Covid-19 Policy: Students should not attend class if they are feeling unwell. They should seek to notify their instructors of theirabsence and, if possible, participate in their classes online.Policy Governing Excused Absences. Excused absences are not given to facilitate student travel independent of College-sponsored travel.Students may be permitted to miss class because of participation in academic field trips.Instructors must co-ordinate and confirm academic fieldtrips with the Principal and/or Academic Programs Manager, priorto the commencement of the Semester to ensure their inclusion in the Semester timetable. Where authorization for an academic fieldtrip is requested after the commencement of the semester, the request must besubmitted to the Principal/ and/ or Academic Programs Manager.The following information is required: Purpose and brief description of the official Harlaxton event or academic fieldtrip. Dates, location, and times (as applicable). Alphabetical list of students involved [Last Name/First Name] along with their student identification number.If approval is granted: Instructors affected will be notified at least one week prior to the class period during which absence is anticipated, or assoon as possible. Missed class time due to student participation is to be considered an excused absence. The grade of a student may not be lowered in any class due to excused absences. It is the student’s responsibility - to take the initiative by consulting with their instructors before the absence occurs, and to do what is required by the instructor to make up all missed assignments and/or examinations. You areexpected to bring your opinions to the class and interact respectfully with the material presented. Dr. Palomares-Fernandez willmeet with you the first time there is a drop in your class participation or your participation does not meet expectation. The first timeyou are asked to meet with Dr. Palomares-Fernandez will not impact your grade. However, if Dr. Palomares-Fernandez is compelledto meet with you a second time or more, then it will negatively impact your participation grade. In addition, there will be someonline assignments (quizzes, activities) that are designed to provide you with a deeper understanding of the materials. Yourcompletion of these assignments will be a part of your participation grade.rdththstExams – 400 points 4 exams at 100 points each (Feb 3 , Feb 24 , March 24 , April 21 )You will be asked to demonstrate your knowledge of the readings and materials covered in class at four points in the semester bycompleting an exam. Each exam will only cover the material the class went over during that period and will not be cumulative.thPaper – 100 points (Due April 5 )You will be asked to select one topic covered in this class and write a 2-3-page paper that utilizes the information you obtain fromthe class readings and at least one additional peer-reviewed research article as a reference. Your paper will identify and discuss theparticular topic you’ve selected, provide information to allow the general public better understand your topic, and provide researchbacked information. Although your paper must follow APA style and be free from typo and grammatical errors, it’s target audience isthe lay public and should be written in a fashion that allows it to be used to educate an adult public about the topic you’ve selected.In-Class Presentation – 300 points (These points are cumulative between both the individual presentation and quizzes)On the first day of class, you will be assigned a topic and presentation date. You will then develop a 10-15 minute class presentationthat covers a minimum of three key points related to your topic. At the end of your presentation, the class will be given a quiz overthe topic you covered and they must be able to identify at least one of the three points made in your presentation.Disability Policy:It is the policy and practice of the University of Evansville and Harlaxton College to make reasonable accommodations for studentswith properly documented disabilities.
