July 2014From theArchivesof Msgr. SlingerThis is the time of year when we takenotice of plants and crops, growing tall andstrong in the summer sunshine. We are wellfamiliar with the parable of the sower andthe seeds he plants upon the ground.Jesus compares the word of God, which isintended to produce fruit in our lives, to theseed sowed in the earth by the farmer. Theseeds of life are sown into us at Baptismand they are then tended to through thecelebration of the sacraments and dailyprayer. Rain almost always producespositive results. The water may run off andeventually end somewhere else, but theearth will respond and it will producesomething fruitful. The falling rain remindsus that God is patient and will persist withhis word until he gets a response. We believe that God’s Word is alive and hasthe power to change our lives. SacredScripture can not only guide us through thedifficulties of life; it can also enrich oursouls and draw us more deeply andintimately into our relationship with God.Taking some time each day to read theBible or to attend Mass nourishes that seedwithin us, and as the parable teaches, givesus an abundant harvest to enjoy and share. As an aside, the United States Conferenceof Catholic Bishops has a great websitewith the daily readings and usually a shortreflection on the readings. Their website is:www.usccb.org. The site has otherresources and information which you mayfind to be helpful, especially about readingand working with the Bible. As we begin to hear the various parablesof Jesus, we would do well to rememberthat the parables were effective teachingtools of the times. Those who were openand willing to reflect upon what Jesus saidalways received more; those with closed ordistracted minds received less. The Churchadapted the parables to its early situation.Remember it was new, small, andpersecuted. The men and womenproclaiming the Gospel faced people whowere shallow minded, hard of heart, andfilledwithworldlypreoccupations.Ironically today’s messengers face thesame situation.Of course if we do not nourish the seed, then the seed fails to grow and mature. Ithink the following reflection best explainswhat I mean. I am not sure who the authoris:The word of God is to the human heartwhat a seed is to the earth. However, justas a seed needs soil, so the word needs areceptive heart. The earth responds to therain and sun so that even the desertblooms. But the arid human heart has thepower to resist so that it remains barren.Lord, soften our hearts with your grace, open them to your gentle love, so that theprecious seeds of your word may take rootin our hearts, and bear much fruit.Prior to the Second Vatican Council, thestudy of Sacred Scripture was not usuallyencouraged. This teaching has changed. The more we know about Scripture, themore we learn about God and ourselves.May each of us seek to be nourished andstrengthened by God’s word, and may itbear much fruit in our lives, and in the livesof those we encounter.
